off season topic - movies...

So, not sure how much talk this will generate, but that post last week about TV shows got me to wondering just what kind of movies you guys like on this site.  One's taste in movies says a lot about a person, so I'm interested in what you guys, of whom many I consider friends, are into.  I am an aspiring screenwriter, so it goes without saying that movies are something that I enjoy quite a bit.  I thought that I would ask you guys just what would be in your top 5.   Here's mine in order:

1 - Braveheart.  I know that a ton of guys immediately say this film when talking about their favorites, but I have to agree that it is the best movie that I have ever seen.  Having mostly Irish blood, mixed with tiny bit of Scottish, I have several close relatives that live in Ireland and Scotland, and their feelings of ill will towards the Brits of history still lingers.  Its sort of like how some in the South still call the Civil War the 'War of Northern Aggression".  The battle scenes changed the way that Hollywood shot battle scenes for ever.  The historical backdrop, the story itself, the acting, the cinematography and Sophie Marceau make this an easy choice for #1.

2 - Stranger Than Fiction.  Many of you may not have heard about this film, because its a bit of a departure from Will Farrel's normal stuff.  His still a bit comedic in it, but it is by no means Anchorman 2.  Farrell plays a taxman who realizes that his life is being narrated by a British author(Emma Thompson) and his life is being dictated by what she says.   Farrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal are awesome in this flick, as is supporting cast Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Queen Latifah.   Funny, touching and a bit odd.

3 - Gone With the Wind.  Not sure if guys today consider this a chick flick, but its not.  Its just a great piece of film.  This sweeping epic never fails to entertain me.  I am a huge history buff, and I love all things Civil War.   Plus you can't beat one of  Hollywood's first major curse word scenes.

4 - Serenity.  Not sure how many scifi fans are out there, but this movie is based on a cult classic scifi series called Firefly, which despite great ratings and a growing fanbase, was canceled in a typical move by the idiots at Fox.  Great acting, witty dialogue and one of the most beautiful women on screen, Morena Baccarin.

5 - Glory.  Again with the Civil War.  Sheesh.   Denzel wins his first oscar for this movie, in the role that propelled him to stardom.  Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes were great.  The battle scenes were as good as any pre-Braveheart, and the story was classic.  There is a scene where a while soldier who had formerly fought with Denzel shouts 'Give em hell, 54th!' as the regiment is marching into a suicide mission.  Easily squeezed a tiny man-tear outta me.

Honorable mention - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, North by Northwest, Rear Window, Saving Private Ryan, Garden State, Full Metal Jacket, 28 Days Later, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Legends of the Fall.

With all the genres out there, and all the movies, it was hard to pick just five.  Not sure how much interest this post will generate.  If anyone wants to, we can break it down into genres every so often.

My favorites, by director

Pulp Fiction – By far Tarantino’s finest film, although Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill vol 1 (by itself) are very good in their own rights.

The Big Lebowski – The Coen brothers’ filmography is littered with fantastic (and diverse) movies like Fargo, Blood Simple, O Brother Where Art Thou, and No Country for Old Men, but the Dude abides.

Magnolia – Seriously, just a great movie, even with the length, the singing, and the frogs. Paul Thomas Anderson’s best, though There Will be Blood (of I’m drinking your milkshake fame) is solid.

Rushmore – It sounds cooler than saying The Royal Tennebaums. Both are great.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – One of the trippiest and most romantic movies I’ve ever seen. Jim Carey is fantastic.

Honorable Mentions: Network, The Savages, Broken Flowers, As Good as it Gets, The Matrix (the first one), Stay (really the trippiest movie I’ve ever seen), The Graduate, Robin Hood (the animated Disney one, Maid Marian is so hot), Waitress, Volver

Gotta agree with most

PTA and Wes Anderson, Coens,Network, Volver is my favorite almodovar movie.

Maid Marian

Isn’t she a fox (like a literal animal) in that version? I would have take the Robin Hood: Men in Tights Marian.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Jun 20, 2008 11:45 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

She’s a pretty sexy fox.

I loved Robin Hood, the cartoon version

Some great archery!

Maid Marian is foxy.

tough

to pick a top five, so i’ll just list a bunch of ones i love:

Man on Fire: First off, Denzel is a great actor, even if he plays somewhat similar characters, he always plays that character very well. His rage and intensity really shine thru in this movie. The Scott Bros. did a nice job building the movie up, making you really like the relationship between him and the girl he is protecting, so that when she is kidnapped you also are extremely pissed and more than happy for Denzel to reign death upon all in his path. I love most Denzel’s stuff actually: American Gangster, Training Day, Malcolm X, and Glory, of course.

Blade Runner: Also a big Harrison Ford fan. This movie is awesome. So dark. “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.” I should also ask everyone, have you ever noticed that Harrison Ford seems to have a patented move in all his action movies?.....in every single one he does what I call “the flying tackle”....he completely leaves his feet, both arms wide in the air, with that classic Harrison Ford distressed look on his face, and tackles whoever he is flying at. Think about it, or watch some of his movies and you’ll see it and go “wow, TMVT was right.” Patriot Games also one of my favorite movies.

Saving Private Ryan, 300, Gladiator. All epic-type movies. All excellent. 300 was a bit overdone but hey, they are movies.

Green Street Hooligans. Bad-ass flick, watch it if you haven’t.

Unfaithful. Diane Lane, staircase scene. Enough said.

tons others but those came to mind first.

good idea 'Ark -- good to have you back

Hey if you ever need an extra for a movie of your’s I’m in. I love movies almost as much as regular TV b/c for so long I worked crazy hours (school and work) and didn’t have a Tivo so it was movies all the time instead of regular TV shows. So with that being said here’s my list:

1. Fight Club – Watched the VHS so many times I wore it out – “How much can you know about yourself if you’ve never been in a fight”
1a. Snatch – yes I’m a closet Brad Pitt fan – “Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
1b. Tombstone – Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell’s best roles ever – “I’ll be your Huckleberry”

All the rest are lumped together but the list includes:
Gladiator – Just plain awesome action and decent story – “Net Yet”
Primal Fear – Didn’t get much fan fare but one of the best twist endings ever –
Man on Fire – “Forgiveness is between them and God, my job is to arrange the meeting”
Rounders – Greatness – “All night long, check, check, check, he tricked me” (all with Russian accent)

all great

loved kalifornia. Don’t forget 12 Monkeys.

Speaking of Pitt

Have you seen “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”? Definitely a different movie (as you can tell from the title), but Pitt (and Casey Affleck) is excellent and it’s a pretty interesting movie

And I love 12 Monkeys. It’s the only time travel movie I’ve ever seen that makes sense.

by BadMaafala on Jun 20, 2008 8:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

wow

12 monkeys made sense to you? Nice. I love that movie and the screenplay is brilliant. But i’m not sure if i buy that it makes more sense than Back to the Future, I mean come on he’s got a photograph that lets him know if he’s fading from reality. Total sense. :)

12 Simians

I’m sure you guys know this movie was made in the “Burgh.” The crazy bum (prophet?) was played by a friend of mind, Harry O’Toole, who is from the Southside. I thought he did a pretty good job.

Military movies

That’s sweet. I have to see Full Metal Jacket. I don’t think my wife would appreciate it though, so I’ll have to find some time when she’s doing something else, haha. Have you seen All Quiet on the Western Front? I thought that was a pretty interesting war movie.

Yeah!

Apocalypse Now! Loved Duvall and Brando in that. Top Gun also rocked…especially the soundtrack. Terri Nunn is a babe.
Forgot Scarface too. Spent last New Years at my buddies in Vegas at a house party. Scarface looping in the backround all night. The lines were flying! “Say hello to my lil’ friend!” and “Don’t worry, I not gonna choot you. Mano, choot dis piece of sh*t!” or “No Mel, you F’ed up” and “Hey Mel, how about a couple of first class tickets to the resurrection?”
Spent Friday nights in 11th grade at the Kings Court in Oakland throwing toast at the screen! The sexiest Susan Sarandon ever was with her mouth moving! Janet Weissssss.

A few more

I agree with a ton of the movies listed above. Just a few more honorable mentions:

1. High Fidelity. If ever a movie summed up how dudes think about women and relationships I think it’s this one.
2. The Trial- An Orson Welles (director of Citizen Cane) movie based on a Kafka novel. This is one of the stranger movies you’ll see as it doesn’t follow any of the normal formulas. But it is amazing and interesting and probably one of the best movies i’ve seen in the last 5 years.
3. Casablanca- Bogart is the biggest badass ever in this movie.
4. Die Hard- Wait Bruce Willis is also a badass… Hmm… Tough competition. In my opinion this first one is the best mindless action film ever.
5. Brazil- Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece (so long as you don’t see the love-conquers-all version) Similar to the Trial in that it breaks all normal movie formulas, but is stunning and interesting and beautiful.
6. Pi- Creepy, strange, and amazing.
7. Dusk till Dawn- Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino=f’ed up madness that is fun to watch.

by Chicago Steeler on Jun 20, 2008 10:45 AM EDT   0 recs

I will definitely have to see Brazil. I liked Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and as I said a few weeks ago, I love Flying Circus. Gilliam’s out of his mind, but he can create some pretty horrorshow visuals.

by BadMaafala on Jun 20, 2008 11:01 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Boss

Great appearance by “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen in High Fidelity.
Love all the Die Hard movies (I listed Die Hard above) but the best Bruce Willis movie not mentioned yet for BTSC has to be “Striking Distance” Ah, Pittsburgh. Home Sweet Home.

Blitzs list

I like many listed. Here’s a fwe of mine.

Memento
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Fletch!
Juice - I miss Tupac
Koyanisquaatsi – if you’re into photography you need to see this. Trippiest, in some ways beautiful, in some ways unbelievably dark and scary, movie I’ve ever seen. And there’s not ONE WORD OF DIALOGUE! You can see some of the images of the movie here, though they’re set to diffirent music. In the movie, it’s set to a Phillip Glass score

Clerks
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly—incredible music as well. Definitely a contender for top of the lsit
Nothing to Lose – guilty pleasure of mine from back in the day. Still a funny, funny movie though.
Shawshank
Misery
The Score – underated heist movie. Deniro, Brando, Norton. Good stuff

by Blitzburgh on Jun 20, 2008 1:02 PM EDT   0 recs

all three,

or just koyanisquaatsi? i saw the first and only part of the second. not my cup, wonder if the three are very different.

by tkired on Jun 20, 2008 6:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

two and three

Are WAAAAY too dark for me. #1 is the truth, at least for me.

Its a visual expose of man vs. nature. The first half of film is spent showing the incredible wonders of PLanet Earth, in still photography. Just incredible.

Part 2, with a seamless transition, is about man and the machines we use to extract and live on Earth. It’s not political or anything – no dialogue – just a mind blowing visual display of the juxtaposition of the two.

by Blitzburgh on Jun 21, 2008 1:16 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Every single Snatch fan should see this movie. It’s good stuff.

by cgolden on Jun 20, 2008 1:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

interesting

I’ll have to keep my eye out for Koyaanisqatsi.

by BadMaafala on Jun 20, 2008 1:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it's f'n incredible

I might suggest you watch it the first time w/o the wife. It’s pretty damn trippy and mind blowing – not exactly a date type movie and unless you’re ready to sit down, not talk, and be amazed, you can get distracted and think ‘what the hell is this’.

It’s only like 70 minutes, but with literally not a second of dialogue, it can be tough for some people. I don’t know your wife, but just a suggestion.

by Blitzburgh on Jun 20, 2008 2:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’ll keep that in mind. She’s usually okay with slow or weird movies as long as they’re not oppressive (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and No country for Old Men come to mind). It’s not like she’ll only watch Made of Honor and Just My Luck, thank heavens. Anyway, we’ll see if I can even find the movie. It doesn’t sound like it’s going to be in your average Family Video.

by BadMaafala on Jun 20, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yea may not be

But it’s somewhat famous movie. Independent stores should have it, not sure about Blockbuster.

a few more from me

Big Tourlbe in Little China – kurt russel at his ridiculous awesomeness pinnacle. ALl that right ingredients for Awesomely Bad movie

Dawn of the Dead – not my genre, but this is good flick.

Lebowski – BadMaafala mentioned it, but worth repeating. Just so good. Best dialogue in cinematic history.

Spellbound and the documentary about Scrabble – forget it’s name but both great

BeerFest – was skeptical, but this is just good cheap comedy. Funny stuff

Heat – Surprised nobody mentioned this Pacino flick

by Blitzburgh on Jun 20, 2008 2:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Mentioned Heat

My favorite Cops & Robbers movie in recent times. How can any movie with DeNiro, Pacino and Val Kilmer not be spectacular?

Forgot about Big Trouble. One of my favorites. Kurt Russell is always cool as hell. (Tombstone, Tango & Cash, Over Board, Tequila Sunrise) Love Kim Catrell in that Big Trouble. Almost as good as her Porky’s role (forgot to mention under comedies) as Ms. Honeywell. (“morale torpitude Ms. Honeywell!”)

Dawn Of The Dead…filmed in Pittsburgh.

Top Movies

Well, looks like you got a good response, ark! I’ll try to contribute some myself:

1. Braveheart – When I saw it in the theater, it was summer in Raleigh. I didn’t realize how long the movie was, but we went into the movie in the afternoon (4 or 4:30, I guess). When we left, I was amazed at how much later it looked (it must have been twilight by then). I sat through a 3+ hour movie, and it never felt long. I was into it the whole time. The Truman Show – Another good story/acting performance. Jim Carrey did a great job in one of his first non-comedic roles.

The Indiana Jones movies – Harrison Ford is the best swashbuckler since Errol Flynn.

Some old John Wayne movies that I like: True Grit – the first western that I liked (in 6th grade), McClintock, The Quiet Man, In Old California – one of his older movies from the 30s or 40s. He played a character other than the tough guy gunslinger. He was still a tough guy, but in this case, as a pharmacist from Boston.

Clint Eastwood westerns – I agree with many: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Hang’em High, A Fistful of Dollars. I think my favorite is For a
