2007 ReDraft
I know that all of our players from the '07 draft havent had a chance to play (Timmons) and could turn out to be great players. However, if the draft was different here is what the Steelers could have been looking at.
Trade back to the early second round. Pick up extra second and thrird round pick.
2a) Justin Blalock OG-Is a tough football player and a team leader. Would be startring for AF this year and would allow Chris K to fight with Simmons for the RG spot.
2b) LaMarr Woodley OLB-If its not boke dont fix it and this guy could be a beast.
2c) Tony Hunt RB_Didn't play much for the Eagles, but got have been useful for the Steelers. Is a big running back and could have been used to run the clock down when the Steelers had a lead, which could have one them anothergame or two this year.
3a) Brandon Mebane DT-A big DT that could still bulk up a bit. Could have provided depth behind Casey Hampton, which would have allowed Chris Hoke to play backup DE instead of Nick Eason last year.
3b) Stewart Bradley ILB-Looks like he could be a a great player. At the least he would have upgraded the Steeler's ST play last year as he was good on coverage units.
4a) Daniel Sepulveda P-Some people were not impressed ast year but I believe he played better than Gardoki and he still has room to get better.
4b) Jermon Bushrod OT-A soild OT prospect that could have been fighting for a job this year. Went to a small school but has everything you look for in a OT.
5)a Kevin Boss TE-Was great for the Giants last year and he could have been just as good if not far better than Matt Spaeth, just drafted two rounds latter. Is a soild blocker and pass catcher, which is something the Steelers could take advantage of.
5b) William Gay CB-Played well when he got a chance and should continue to improve. Reminds me of a young Desha Townsend, just a little more raw.
7) Brandon Siler LB-Slipped in the draft and turned out to be a great ST player for the Bolts last year. He could have joined Bradley as a soild ST coverage guy and really improved one of the weakest part of our team, and which could have stopped some of the loing returns we saw last year.

Interesting
The only ones i dont agree with are tony hunt and kevin boss. i guess boss has good value as a 5th rounder but i just dont see what was so spectacular about him to warrant the praise he got. I saw him make a couple of routine catches wide open. Now everyone thinks hes better than Shockey. Brandan Mebane could have been useful considering how thin we are at DT and i remember hearing about him a little bit. Still…i think Timmons is going to prove this year why he was taken 15th overall. If hes healthy and can provide the sideline to sideline athleticism they think he can, ill take that over your draft. Your draft would have really helped the O-line as well as special teams though. (Two things we struggle with the most.)

I think the real scenario..
..will turn out much more favorable to the Steelers over the years than your hypothetical one. As a middle linebacker, Timmons will be the most active defensive player on the Steeler team in the future. Linebackers don’t seem to get a lot of respect around the league, but they are directly involved in more plays each game than any other position player outside of quarterbacks and running backs. Use your top picks on the players who make the most difference each game.

breaking it down a little more..
In addition to Timmons, you have eliminated Matt Spaeth. As a blocking tight end, Spaeth is almost as much an offensive lineman as a guard like Blalock, with the added advantage of being able to be on the feild in addition to the starter. With a guard, it’s pretty much an all or nothing situation, you wouldn’t see Faneca, Simmons, and Blalock on the feild at the same time, whereas I think that Miller and Spaeth were on at the same time in certain sets. You added Kevin Boss later, but the Steelers are not a team that throws a lot to the tight end, so his talents would be wasted here unless Heath Miller went down for a long stretch.
Adding Tony Hunt would have eliminated Gary Russell as a free agent signing in all likelyhood. Either that or the two of them would be competing for the same spot. I think that Russell has the same upside as Hunt, possibly higher. In any event, Hunt would become redundant once Rashard Mendenhall was added. Beyond that, I don’t know a lot about the other players you added, but over all I can’t see them having much more of an impact than the late round/free agent prospects the Steelers actually brought in.

I agree, this redraft doesn’t seem so great, especially considering you included an improbable trade. Everyone thinks its great to trade down, but it’s harder than you think. Plus, I like the idea of having Timmons take over for Foote this year and then Farrior next year.
The 2007 draft, if Timmons pans out, looks like a pretty good one.

Boss and Others
Until Shockey was hurt last year Boss was used a s a blocking TE. Once the Giants needed to throw to him he stepped up his game. He is a soild blocker. The reason for drafting Blalock would be to replace Faneca down the road, and the Falcons might play him at RT this year, so he could have competed there. He is tAller, stronger, and more athletic than Colon. Stewwart Bardley figures to be a very soild LB in this league, as does Brandon Siler. If they had drafted Hunt they would have used him to run the clock down becasue he could pick up 3-4 yard consitantly, unlike Willie Parker who will pick up 1 yard then 1 yard then 2 yards then 1 yard thaen 15 yards. He does not move a pile and is not good at running the clock down. This is where Hunt would have come in. Bushrod would in all likelyhood be starting if he wasnt on one of the best O-lines in the league, the Saints. If he was with the Steelers, he would be probably be then staring right tackle, and we could have avoided the transition tag foolishness with Starks.

I don't see a lot of difference between Blalock..
..and Chris Kemoeatu who is first string at LG, or Max Starks who is first string at RT. He may be a better prospect than Willie Colon, but the way things look, Colon will just be a backup this year. The players Steelers have on hand, (and you can include Trai Essex in the mix) all have the advantage of at least a couple of years of on the job experience.
As for the TE position, I think that Spaeth was the best all round player at the position to come out last year. Possibly the best blocker and a better than average pass catcher. Especially for a guy who is 6-7 and over 270 pounds. He won the Mackay Award as the top TE in college in 2006.

Blalock...
Blalock is a better athlete, which makes him more suited to play LG. Chris K. almost beat out Kendell Simmons last year, and if they were competing again, I think Chris would win. He seems more physical and nastier than Simmons. Then Bushrod could be starting at RT, which would mean this draft would have helped our line at both guard spots and right tackle. I think Spaeth is a fine player, but college awards dont always translate into the pros. Also even if he is “better” getting Boss two rounds latter makes up for that difference. Also if Hunt were taken, we might have passed on RM, which might hurt the offence a bit but we could have either traded down and pick up someone like Cason or Kenny Philips to upgrade our secondary or Philip Merling or Ketwan Balmer to upgrade our D-line. This makes the team much stronger in my o.

I really liked Blalock last year and he’s played pretty well up to this point. Spaeth was the worst pick last year (obvious at the time). He’s worthless as a blocker (if you watch the games) and isn’t a great threat as a receiver other than from the 1 yard line. I think they wanted some of the receivers taken right before they picked, but they were all gone and peed their pants a little. Timmons should be pretty good, but I still think it’s a toss up as to who will be the best in the long run between him, Staley and Blalock. I think the OL’s may be better, but I’m sure ethan will have strong unbacked arguments against whatever I say. Beason obviously got more attention this year, but I still think I’d rather have Timmons.
I loved the Woodley pick at the time, and it’s pretty obvious that that’s the most promising value at this point.
