give it a shot

Someone please chime in,I'm probably no expert but I am praying every night that the Steelers front office will sign Lecharles Bentley to a non-guaranteed bonus laden contract and put him at guard. This only seems logical since we lost our best lineman and Charles was an allpro at guard and center.Even if he doesnt pan out what have we got to lose?? This could pan out to be a great pickup for the men of steel, and wouldnt Charles love to put it to the clownies twice a year!!

If we can get a bargain

i would only make if move if the money is right. your right he might end up being a steal, but i think his best days are behind him.

eh

I don’t know when I first thought about it I said, heck yea do it. He’s still decently young and would most likely be cheap. But the flip side is that he hasn’t played in two full seasons and if I remember correctly he asked for his release b/c he was going to have to compete for playing time. Who’s ready to hand Bentley a starting spot? Plus where is he going to play: If he’s the starting center, that would mean that they’ve signed three centers in the past two years and if plays guard then we’re giving up on Chris K before he even gets a shot or eating a ton of Simmons’ contract. I guess what I’m trying to say is I’ll pass.

a random thought

It’s possible that whoever signs him will get a pretty good deal. He wants to play, but the closer it gets to the season, the more he’ll think about taking less. Call it “the Lance Briggs effect” if you will. He’ll either jump in for someone who gets injured during camp (which isn’t easy if they expect him to make the calls), or settle for a backup role that could become a starting role next year. We’d fit that second mold, and if we signed him for a fitting contract, there’s a good chance we’d get a pretty good deal. Probably a small starting salary and SB with higher salaries in a year or two, saying he’ll either be a starter or cut.

I don’t think I’d be opposed to such a contract, but it would shake stuff up on an already shaken line and possibly send some bad messages to someone like Hartwig, who’s a slightly less talented version of Bentley anyway. We’re also really tight against the cap and there’s not a whole lot of hope that a Starks deal will give us some relief, either. I don’t see us mortgaging our salary structure’s future to take a chance on a guy like Bentley.

agreed

We’ve probably had our salary cap plans laid out from at least 6 months ago. Probably no room to make any changes.

Also, maybe it’d be wise if we left a little financial flexibility to be able to get an extra body on the DL if need be next month.

A big no on Bentley. The guy hasn’t played in 2 years, what makes us think he’ll still be any good?

just a shot

I just feel like its worth a chance on a guy who was arguably one of the three best centers before his injury. If we give him a bonus laden deal and it doesnt pan out than we really dont lose much, but if he comes out as half the player he was before than we still have the best center in the division.

i hear ya

Not a terrible line of thinking at all by you. I wish teams would roll the dice more, both in game situations and in their personnel moves. But teams seem to err on the side of cautiosness. If that move blew up in the face of a team, GM and Coach both are fired.

$$$$$$$$$$$$

I just think we should save our money for more of a need be basis. The Steelers arent one to stretch for players on the downslide. I think they learned a lesson from Doosh Staley. Injury ridden free agents rarely pan out. Just like Blitz said. Some D-line may be more important right now.
