Davenport Reportedly Released by the Steelers
Thanks to Datruth for calling this to our attention on another story. The National Post has written that the NFL Network has reported that the Steelers have released Najeh Davenport and freed up about $1 million of salary cap. Yahoo Sports also weighed in on this. Obviously the additions of Mewelde Moore and Rashard Mendenhall paved the way for this decision.
The Steelers apparently tried to trade Dookie but were unsuccessful. Davenport played two seasons with Pittsburgh (28 games) and actually racked up some impressive back-up numbers, He rushed for 720 yards on 167 carries for a 4.3 average and six touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 377 yards and three more touchdowns. Davenport also returned kick for Pittsburgh. But with the Steelers' new additions at running back, Davenport was no longer an answer. Regarding the timing of this move, are the Steelers scraping up cash to make a pitch for LeCharles Bentley?

While he had his moments, with Mendenhall, Parker, Moore, and even Gary Russell, I think this was the right move. Saves some cash, and more importantly, a roster space.

Oh glorious day
I’m glad they didn’t let this drag out through training camp. I’d much rather see Russell getting carries and reps in practice and preseason than Dookie.

That works out
Its not like we all didnt see this coming. They are stocked with RB`s and Davenport was the odd man out. Not a bad backup at all but he will get more touches somewhere else.

Its official
Steelers.com reports the release of Dookie and three others including Lorello and Legursky.
As many have mentioned, not a surprise. And as Gold says the timing is encouraging. Best wishes to Dookie in future endeavors.

The person the other day who was all about Legursky, I told you so.

No, he had good workout numbers
so he’ll be all-pro, of course. This is a huge mistake.

yeah, pretty
much saw this one coming. As for Bentley, I don’t really want him. Not sure if its because he was a Brown or his injury problems, just don’t really want him. Prolly be fairly cheap tho.

worth the gamble?
Those are decent numbers Davenport put up for the franchise. I appreciate the work he put in, but his release doesnt really register as much of a surprise or more importantly, something that leaves a void in the Steelers backfield. Even with his release, the stable appears to be in good order. Excellent work by the Colbert and Tomlin in making this group a strength and an area of solid depth following the retirement of a Hall of Famer.
(#36, 2005). On a related note, I have to say how pleased I am about the way Parker, Ward, Farrior and other veterans on the roster have shown the same commitment to helping the young guns learn the ropes of professional football, on and off the field as Bussie.
As for Bentley, I am actually intrigued by the prospect and it crossed my mind when Davenport was released that it was at least plausible that the Steelers could take a look at Bentley. I dont assume to know what the current line is on Bentley, but in my mind he’s a player that could potentially help this team at a critical position. That being said, the Ilkin interview (well done, Rose) left me optimistic about the current group of O-linemen. Like Ilkin, I believe the Steelers on the rise (and it all starts up front), despite losing Big Red. In other words, I think the Steelers have the players to get it done in the trenches. Which players are going to step up remains to be seen, but there doesnt appear to be any glaring needs or desperation on the part of the Steelers to fill the gaps. Which makes it all the more intriguing about the prospects of Bentley joining the ranks. If he will sign for the league minimum or other reasonable figure, it could be a worth rolling the dice.

yep
these seem like the right cuts to me at the moment. doubt we’re bringing in bentley, but it wasnt long ago he was decent. i’d personally like to see what hartwig and stapleton can do; so i would not mind the Steelers passing on LeCharles, unless he’s clearly better than what they got.

cuts
I think the money they’re scraping up is more to sign the rookies than to sign another FA. They didn’t have the cap room to do even that before these moves. They also need to trim the roster 2 more spots before camp, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
Interesting that they cut Lorello and Legursky, 2 people we’d been hearing about a little as people who could make the team. They didn’t seem like they were the lowest guys on the depth chart, while people like Billy Lasko, Dezmond Sherrod, and Patrick Bailey outlasted them.

well
Maybe they cut those guys, Dookie in particular, so they could sign with other teams. There are still about 30 guys that have to be put on the PS or cut alltogether. That’s quite a few, and I cant imagine that Lorello, Legursky, and Najeh were the first four gone because they were the worst players.

I’ll agree that Naj wasn’t one of the 4 worst players on the team, but he was on the downside of his career (and has no more growth potential), making too much money, and fully expendible. I’m sure it’s better for him to get cut now, but they also needed the money for rookies.
When you’re cutting younger guys, esp UDFA’s, you have to be sure that they don’t have significant potential hiding under a rough exterior, and you certainly don’t want to give them a chance to catch on somewhere else. If they thought Legursky was going to the 11th best lineman on a 10 OL team or a guy who had the potential to start at any point, they would have kept him around for injuries and tried to hide him on the PS for a year. If they thought Lorello was a limited upside guy who could fill in decently if he knew what was going on (a la Ty Carter), he’d still be on the team as well. For them to cut those guys this early, it doesn’t speak very highly of their potential.

or
It could mean the team thinks they have enough potential to make a living for themselves on another team, so they’re granting them the chance to sign on somewhere else and make an impression. Certainly I think that’s the case with Najeh. He’ll be in the league this year and getting carries. There’s just no room for him and perhaps also with Lorello, who’s competing with a number of other players.

In the Trib
They said that they Steelers were present for Kevin Jones’ workouts. I think I’d prefer Bentley and carry Hartwig and Mahan as backup C/Gs than Kevin Jones as a 3rd/4th string RB.
"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"
at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

1 million reasons why he was cut
Davenport was due $1 million next year.
