Switching D from 3-4 to Tomlins tampa 2?
I keep hearing all of this talk about the Steelers switching from the 3-4 blitz scheme to Tomlins preferred tampa 2 style. I really hope that doesnt happen. Their style of defense is the main thing that makes the Steelers who they are, and Dick Lebeau has been running it to perfection for years.
To me it doesnt get any better when linebackers are bouncing in and out, and Polamalu starts creeping in from the secondary before the snap further confusing the other teams line so bad that they dont know who or where the pressure is coming from. Plus our players are built for the 3-4, so even if they decided to switch i dont know who would play D end. Our hybrid linebackers and run stuffing lineman are perfect for the style we run. I like the relentless attitude of going all out after the QB instead of just sitting back with a (bend not break) mentality. If Tomlin does make the switch you can expect the Steeler D to not be much more than any other boring, run of the mill mediocre defense. It would be like a pitbull getting his balls chopped off.
If its not broke dont fix it! Let me know what you think.

So long as LeBeau’s around, we’re not making any changes. And if you look at who we’ve drafted past two years, it certainly doesnt look like we’ll be making the transition anytime soon. Woodley’s got a little versatility, but we did nothing really to get 3-4 type defensive ends in this draft. I don’t see it happening in next three years.

3-4
I haven’t heard any mention of switching to the ‘Tampa 2’ any time recently.

I agree
I agree with you 100%. The media brings up frequently that we are switching to the 4-3, when nothing has happened to suggest such a thing and Mike Tomlin has actually said he doesn’t have any plans to switch the Defense.
But the Tampa-2 defenses do have their origins in the old Steel Curtain defenses from back in the day, so I am not sure that if the Steelers did switch to a 4-3 style defense that we wouldn’t spice it up and make it interesting.

it isn't even
brought up by the media much anymore, except for them to note something along the lines of “while many expected Tomlin to switch to a 4-3, he is still sticking with the 3-4”. this is a non-issue. we aren’t switching. as it is, we play a 4-3 and cover 2 defenses alot anyways, and ALWAYS have. most NFL defenses nowadays throw alot of different looks, and us and Baltimore do it more than anybody.

The 4-3 is only more attractive to me
Because somehow that found a way to stop the almighty Patriots. As long as Tomlin has Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel instead of Michael Stahan and Osi Umenyiora, we’re going to be in the 3-4. Both our guys are aging though, so while we don’y need to make any decision asap, it will be interesting to see the type of defensive ends Tomlin acquires next. We cannot go another 12 months without addressing the future of the D-Line, and at that time we will get a glimpse as to what is in store three years from now.

I think they switch fairly often..
..within the game. The chess game between the offensive and defensive co-ordinators has become so sophisticated that no team can go with the same basic set all game, all season long. Defenses are adjusted according to the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents from week to week. The opponents then adjust their offensive sets to try to take advantage of the defense’s strengths or weaknesses…so on and so forth.
I think the fact that they brought in Booger McFarland for a look indicates they would like a little more flexibility up front. McFarland presumably would have lined up alongside Casey Hampton in a four man front on occasion. But he didn’t pass the test, and as someone pointed out, the draft picks indicate that the team will continue to rely primarily on the 3-4 alignment. The fact that they picked a future rush OLB in Bruce Davis, and a future ILB in Mike Humpel, as two of their three defensive picks (without any front linemen), would suggest that the 3-4 will continue to be the bread and butter setup.

agreed
I think you summed it up pretty well, robert. Nothing happening anytime soon based on these draft picks.
Also agree about teams not staying in one set the whole game. We threw all sorts of different looks out there last year, including some bizarre 2-3-6 looks and a few other hard to identify packages.

defenses in general
seem to be more complex, as far as multiple looks and formations. our HC and DC have said as much in admitting there are already similarities in concept between the cover-two and the Steelers 3-4. So, the talk about 3-4 vs. cover-two or whatever have more to do with the starters and starting formation.

The no base D
I have to agree with Robert too. It seems to me under Tomlin’s love for players that can play many positions, we are trying to build a group of athletic defenders, so we can play any type of aggressive formation we need to win. Looking at this years draft, we didn’t take a true 3-4 or even a 4-3 DE. From what I read on Davis, he was an aggressive player, but really to small for a college DE. If that description is true, he can’t bulk up to a NFL 4-3 DE. We truly seem to be drafting athletes.
Personally I think it would be a waste of Troy’s talent to just play Tampa 2.

Changing the D?
I remember when the Steelers 1st went to a 3-4. Man was I upset. We won 4 Superbowls with the D we had. Why in hades would they want to change it? It made no sense at all to me. Under the 3-4 we had a loss in SB XXX and of course a victory in SB XL over an approximate 15 yr timeline. IF Tomlin goes back to the cover 2 it would just be going back to the D we won 4 SBs with. 4-0 vs a 1-1 is’nt too shabby now is it? The emperor, Chaz Noll taught Tony D who in turn taught Mike T the cover 2 which is also known as the Tampa 2. If Mike T decides to change I would’nt be upset in the least.

interesting
Handt thought of it quite like that. Personnel’s not right as of now, but heck, history sure suggests why not go back to what got ya here :)

4 SBs in the 70s
but no season in the 80s with 10 or more wins.
You also need to change with the times. In the 70s, the Steelers drafting was innovative and ahead of the curve. But, by the 80s, everyone caught up in that. The Steelers have done a fantastic job of managing the salary cap, but remember when it first started? We were losing 10 FAs every year.
If any change is needed, it’s to come up with the next innovation, I think.

Great feedback
Yeah i thought this was a dead issue myself until they brought it up again on NFL network about a week ago saying Tomlin has hinted at making a gradual change. I agree with the fact that as long as Lebeau is there its not going to happen. I would just hate to see something unique go to generic. Also good point about rarely being in the base 3-4 anyways. Half the time you cant really pinpoint what they are doing (which seems to be the point of the defense anyways) They could call it kill the quarterback for all i care. As long as they continue to bring the pain…im happy.
