Ward and Rooney get some love from ESPN

Hines gets a little recognition from Espn who did a poll among the current head coaches on the dirtiest player, smartest offensive and defensive player, and the best owner.

Ward is my favorite player, and I think a definite Hall Of Famer, and I wouldn't trade the Rooneys for any owners in the league, even the Maras.  Its just another reminder of the quality of football that we as Steeler fans have had to enjoy for so long.

Ward

Good to see Hines getting some good recognition. Hopefully, that will help him get in the HOF. It should help, since it seems to be, at least partly, based on how well known and popular players are with the sports media.

I saw that

Yeah, I saw that. When I think of Ward, “smart” isn’t always the first adjective that comes to mind, but that’s cool that that’s his rep around coaches. He doesn’t strike me as a genious or anything, but I certainly would say he’s football smart. Good to see.

yea

Well, I mean, he’s had to have something at his disposal to be on the cusp of a HOF career, despite not really playing much WR in college, being undersized, etc. And if it’s true that players think he’s ‘dirty’, than youd have to believe that they are on the lookout for him at all times. Yet, there Hines is, making key blocks, body slamming Ed Reed, making big catches in traffic, etc. Heady football player that’s always in the right place at the right time.

Rooney gets a little too tight with his money sometimes

thats why I love Jones as an owner, he’ll spend whatever it takes to produce a winner without getting into salary cap hell for the future.

Rooney's

Steelers teams have always been right up against the cap-max. So saying Jones will spend more isn’t really true. The Steelers don’t make splashy free-agent signings, but thats also a factor of them drafting well, and keeping their good draft picks locked up before they become free-agents (or when the Steelers deem them too old and not worth another huge deal: Faneca, Porter, etc). The Steelers probably spend almost as much total as the Cowboys.

Jones

He did get his team into salary cap hell after 95. The team got older, and he was kind of stuck because of that huge (at the time) signing bonus he gave Deion. It does appear, however, that he’s reigned in his ego somewhat and learned from Parcells.

But, as TMVT said, the Steelers are always right up there at the salary cap. The only thing you could say is that he didn’t pay Cowher what most thought was market value, but he also didn’t fire Cowher after back to back losing seasons in the 90s. So, it goes both ways.

Yeah,

Anyone who thinks the Steelers are cheap should look at our salary cap numbers for the past decade. We let older vets go to make room for extensions for younger, more deserving guys. Look at Joey Porter. The Rooney’s are cheap when it comes to stadiums, but they also don’t have the income Jones has and can’t afford that monstrosity he’s building.

The only difference between Rooney's and Jones's wallet

Is the fact that Jones has all that extra Texas Stadium income that is not shared; thus, he can spend “cash over cap” and deal with tomorrow tomorrow. He only pays more because he has more chips to begin with.
