Favre Returns?!?
Let the rumors continue to swirl, as ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Favre has asked to be released from his contract with the Green Bay Packers. The release would allow him to be snagged by other teams in need of help at the quarterback position.
Use this thread to share your thoughts on where Favre might end up. Yes, it's still premature to say he'll be playing football in 2008, but let's not kid ourselves. If he wants to play, which he clearly does, some team will more than likely gladly pick him up. The publicity he brings, not to mention his abilities at the most important position on the field, make the decision an easy one for some club.

Oh, sheesh.
I like Favre, but I’m really sick of the perpetual drama that is his retirement. Can we make some sort of deal here at BTSC agreeing not to post anything on the subject until if and when he signs a contract?

hehe
I tend to avoid these kinds of things, but what the hey. It’s Friday, nothing whatsoever in Steelers Country going on.
And, we are talking about one of the greatest QBs of all time who has played his entire career in one city. The likelihood of him finishing his career elsewhere is not growing more and more likely. The whole ‘tarnishing his legacy’ discussion is one that I would like to see where some of y’all come down on.
So, sorry Hines! Though I generally agree with your sentiment, I can’t make that rule, though I can promise this will be the only thing I’ll be posting about the subject until a contract is inked :)

Hate
I know I should have more respect for Favre and what he’s done – but I just don’t. To me he is one of those guys who just needs to be in the spot light. No matter what – at expense to the city, team, fans. I understand that he is ‘just having fun’ and a ‘gunslinger’ but damn’t, I think he’s an ‘idiot’ too. Year after year he’s been running GB through the ringer with his rumors and innuendo and ‘aww shucks’ quotes to some dogshit newspaper somewhere in mississipi. I just don’t care. I just can’t do it anymore – Great – have him come back to the Ravens – I’d like to see it. If not just to see some stat padding by the likes of woodley and timmons…
I know – I probably went to far… oh well.

Favre
Maybe I missed it, but I don’t remember Favre putting GB through the wringer every year. I definitely remember the last two years that he let it linger, particularly after they had gone 5-11. I didn’t blame him at that point. But, previously to two years ago, I just don’t remember it being a big story. I remember people saying he should hang it up, and he was washed up, but I don’t remember him making a big issue of whether he was coming back or not. Again, I may have missed something.

yea
I think its kinda unfair that people put so much pressure on him to retire. His life, his body, his career. He’s so young, why not play till they drag you off the field. That’s my opinion of atheletes playing perhaps a bit too long. Nobody will remember Jerry Rice being mediocre in Oakland or Seattle. He wanted to play, he did, probably enjoyed himself, and to boot, made some extra scratch. Dont see whats wrong with that.

Rice
And, with Rice, he was still a quality WR until, really his last season. I think the year before he was still putting decent numbers (especially considering his age at that point). You could definitely see a quick decline between his second to last and last seasons.

This comeback
I would rather that he decide to stay retired, because, I really don’t want him to play anywhere else. He’s a Packer, and if he wanted to stay, he should have resisted the front office pushing him for an answer in March. He could have just told them that he’d let them know in 2 weeks or a month. They did basically know already who was going to replace him, so all they needed was a backup to Rodgers if he did retire. Eventually, they could have gotten Culpepper or Leftwich to accept a “chance” to compete.
But, anyway, he shouldn’t have been so emphatic about retiring, only to come back, if, indeed, this all proves to be true. Generally, though, stories that are this detailed are true.
All of that said, I enjoyed seeing him break all the records, and once we lost the Jags, I was hoping GB would win the SB. I would like to see him play again, just not on a broken down team. The only good fit seems to be Ravens, and that would suck out loud.

I have always been a fan of Brett Farve. He’s been the one the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL for last 15 years. I think the Packers are making a huge mistake if they let him go. I mean let’s face it, the guy can still play. He’s still a top five quarterback in my opinion. I’m thinking Bill Parcells feels the same way. If Farve is let go, I would not be surprised if he ends up in Miami.

i can't really imagine
the pressure that both sides must have felt. Think about Favre and the kind of competitor that he is. The guy still has a great ability, but it just wears ya down all year, esp that old. He obviously loves the team. He wants to play for them, but just doesn’t know if he can take another year. Drafts comin up, and he’s got the Pack on him to make a decision. Gotta be tough.
And from the Packers standpoint, you gotta get that decision soon, gotta scout out possible replacements for the backup, gotta get Rodgers ready. They might have put a little too much pressure on him, but ya can’t really blame em for being antsy.
I hope he comes back and I hope he plays for the Pack. He’s my second favorite player next to Hines, I just love the way he plays. The game after his dad died was legendary. It would suck to see him in another jersey, and I pray to God Almighty that he doesn’t land with the Ravens. As for his options:
AFC no way – Pitt, Clev, Cincy, NE, Indy, Jax, Tenn, SD, Denver, all have rock solid qb situations
AFC losers – Jets, Buff, Miami, Oak, Houston, Oak – no way here, Favre wants to win.
AFC maybes – Ravens, KC. Can he win with these teams? I don’t really think so.
NFC no way – Dallas, GIants, Skins, Seattle, NO, St Louis, Philly, Zona – Pretty solid qb situations here, I know the Rams only won 3 games but I don’t really see em replacing Bulger. The Skins’ Campbell seems to be their man, and Reid loves McNabb.
NFC losers – Atlanta, San Fran, Chicago, Detroit. Just don’t seem ending up here simply because of again, he wants to win. I read somewhere about him ending his career where he started in LA, but I think no way that happens.
NFC maybes – Minny, Carolina and Tampa. Favre and AD anyone? That’s where my money is, Minnesota. I could see Tampa though. And I know that folks are getting tired of Delhomme.

I think that is what Favre has been angling for all along
He was probably pretty sick of the adulation in Green Bay, and the generally inept way the organization was run for much of the time he played there. Crappy little town with no life outside the Packers.
Favre is unique and marvelous. An American icon that stands equal to any in the history of the nations sports figure. He should play until his bones are too brittle to heal. Somewhere new and warm and interesting, preferably.
by robert ethan on Jul 11, 2008 10:55 PM EDT 0 recs
inept?
they went to two super bowls. pretty well run organization i think. not as well as the Steelers but one of the better ran teams when you look at the whole league. if most other players did this every year the media would be all over them how they were just glory hounds and wanted to be in the center of attention. i love Favre but let’s admit the cold fact, he LOVES being the center of attention. imagine if TO said he was retiring and cried at the press conference and then two months later said he wanted to play again and come back. every athlete misses competition when their career is over. Favre needs to be a man and get over it. find some other way to exercise your competitive juices. he has put himself in a lose lose situation. he def. won’t play for GB again, so he’ll go to some crappy team (think Dolphins) and play terribly. and he’ll get sick of losing halfway thru the season and retire. mark my words.

They had the second highest win %
to the Steelers during the Bill Cowher era, and 3rd highest after NE and Pitt in the last 20 years, 15 of which Farve was a starter.

Vikings
The best place Farve could go would be Minnisota. That team is stacked with talent at almost every position except QB. They added Bernard Berrian and Jared Allen.
Farve + All Day = Superbowl

I was thinking the same thing -division rivals too
Then the guy on NFL live noted that Monday Night Football kickoff is… Vikings @ Packers… and they were gonna retire Brett’s jersey! Things could get interesting…
I guess Ravens or Vikings. NFL Live guesses: Redskins, Bucs (of course, he’s a QB, why not) and Vikes.

Free Favre!
If he wants to play let him play. He doesn’t orchestrate all of the media hype regarding his retirement. He’s just a guy who realizes he misses football and knows he’s going to be a depressed mess once it starts without him. As long as he can play I have no problem with it. And drama is why the NFL is fun! 4th and goal, down by 4, .03 seconds on the clock in the Super Bowl. This is why we watch! Favre coming out of retirement. Who will he play for? Can he still play? What if he plays for another team and they play the Packers? In the Super Bowl!!? Fun I say, FUN.

why would the packers straight out release him?
then he would be free to sign in their division and they would get no return. If anything they should trade his rights, you would have to think someone would give up a 1st round pick for a chance to get a proven top tier QB
by schnifin on Jul 12, 2008 11:11 AM EDT 0 recs
they actually
have to either release him or let him come back to the team. I wonder what they will do. If they release him, I think Minnesota or Chicago are definitely gonna move in like dingos to a baby. If they don’t release them, he will just ask for reinstatement, which they have to comply with. So, do you release him and play him twice a year? Or keep him on and deal with all the media circus revolving a qb controversy like no other? I think they release him and just deal with having to play him. And guess who the Packers play their first game Sept 8th in prime time? Minnesota. Now who wouldn’t like to see that?

if they reinstate him
why couldn’t they then turn around and trade him?
by schnifin on Jul 12, 2008 11:35 AM EDT 0 recs
i think so, but
I can’t see anyone wanting that trade. He wont play for a loser, he has said as much. I can’t see too many contenders trading for him since there aren’t any that need his services, except for the ones in the Pack’s own division. Pretty sticky situation he’s created.

Ravens Despiration
I’m giving 2:1 odds that the Crows will give up a first rounder for Favre fairly early into training camp. They’ve burned through 7 starters @ qb over the past 7 yrs & their fan base reatipidly swallow hook, line, & sinker that with their smashing (however aged) defense, they’re only 1 adequate qb away from the promised land. Any takers?

Trade Rodgers?
Just out of curiousity, do you think that instead of getting nothing for Favre coming back and causing all this uncertainty, how about bringing him back, letting him start and then trading Aaron Rodgers for 2nd round pick? Similar to the Matt Schaub deal. They drafted Brian Bohm (I think) so they have a chance for a qb in the future and that way they still get some value out of Rodgers which they will not get if they just bench him again this year.
That way the Packers don’t have to worry about Favre beating them playing for Minnesota but they still get a chance to get some value out of Rodgers.
by Chicago Steeler on Jul 15, 2008 8:33 AM EDT 0 recs
could explain why
Packers management has been sending all these signals that they don’t feel like they need Favre. by implication they are saying they really believe in Rodgers, thus possibly helping his potential trade value. heck, Favre could even be playing along.

Unlikely
I just don’t see that happening. Favre’s not playing more than a year or two. Brohm could end up better than Rodgers, but are you willing to take that gamble with the best young team in the league?

I'm more interested
in this “routine” knee surgery for Manning. Too bad the Steelers don’t open against the Colts.
by vherub on Jul 15, 2008 3:51 PM EDT 0 recs
why in the world
would they favor Rodgers over Favre, or even Brohm for that matter? Rodgers has attempted 59 passes total his entire pro career. It’s not like he is some tested veteran. I’m not saying he will be terrible. I’m just saying that he is by no means a sure thing. So Favre acted a little primadonnaish about his retiring. So have a ton of famous athletes. Big deal. If he wants to come back, you should take him back. NO WAY is Rodgers an upgrade from Favre. That’s what it comes down to. Who can win more games? Aaron Rodgers? Or the guy who currently holds just about every major passing record in the game? I don’t see the issue.
by steelerark on Jul 16, 2008 1:41 PM EDT 0 recs
Agreed
The more I think about it and learn, it seems that the team unnecessarily created this situation. They could have had Favre back, and some would have criticized him since he was emphatic about not coming back. But, others have done the same thing and performed well. If you have a team that appears poised to win it all, you take the best QB that year. It’s not like this is a re-building team anymore. This looks like a fully re-built team, but if you decide to break in a new QB, it could be a year or two before he steps up (if he ever does).
