Steelers Still Interested in Kevin Jones???
For some reason the Steelers are still being mentioned in the hunt for Kevin Jones. This article reports that his agent has said it is down to us or the Bears.
I do believe it makes sense for him to sign with the Bears. They've cut Cedric Benson and it looks like right now Rookie Matt Forte would be the starter there. Seriously, theres been a lot of smoke to this point - could there be fire? Why are we continuously brought up? We are loaded to the gills at the Running Back position - Parker, Mendenhall, Moore, Russell. Thoughts?

you beat me to it
I don’t get it, the article that I found was from a Tampa Bay paper that says Tampa fell out of the running b/c they already have too many running backs. I can’t imagine the Steelers would sign Kevin Jones unless they already had a trade in principal to move out FWP or M&M, that’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Surely this is just his agent trying to keep more than one team in the picture to drive up value.

Value or Trade
Those were my only real thoughts – either we are working something out to trade a back behind the scenes – or his agent is just attempting to use us as leverage with the Bears. In any case – I don’t know what we’d use him for.

agent
The only thing that bugs me is that if his agent is just trying to drive up his value, he would have to assume that the bears were completely oblivious to the rest of the teams in the league and didn’t know that the steelers were stacked at RB.
So, either the agent is a really poor liar, or there is something going on. I don’t think that agents tend to be bad liars.
That being said, I’d have no idea why we’d be interested.

i have to believe
that he is in the running because he won’t be ready by the beginning of the season, but could fill in nicely if FWP, Mendy, or Moore went down with injury later on. I would still rather see Gary Russell, but that’s the only scenario (outside of a trade, which i think is unlikely) that makes sense.

A trade doesn't makes sense either
Why would we draft a RB in round 1, then, before signing him, trade Parker below value (us trading him after his injury would raise a few red flags)? Surely Moore wouldn’t bring much trade value, and it sounds like he’s had a pretty good offseason so far. He’s also probably our best P/K returner, and we need a returner. We wouldn’t trade him when we’re not sure if Mendy will be able to be a third down back right off the bat yet. And Russell is worthless in a trade, however much potential he may have.
Jones is still young and could still return to his rookie form, but there’s just no room for him on our roster. At this point, I’d say Gary Russell has more potential. The only other thing I can imagine is that they want another guy who could return kicks, but I can’t find anything that suggests he’s done that in the past. This interest in Jones still doesn’t make sense.

completely agree
A trade doesn’t make much sense at all, but it makes more sense than carry FWP, Mendenhall, Moore, Jones and Russell. Surely this is just his agent trying to keep another team’s name in the mix so that Chicago can’t low-ball him.

Conspiracy
This is just wild talk – but what if we found someone who wanted the rights to Mendenhall. From all reports he did slide quite a bit – I haven’t done much research but I wonder if a few teams have multiple first round picks next year. We might think, hey – we could grab another first next year – then pick up a few O linemen if the line doesn’t perform this year.

no more wild talk!
I know its just conjecture, but its scaring me, haha.
I need to see mendenhall on the field in a Steelers uniform next season. It must happen.

interesting -- purely wild speculation
That crossed my mind but I couldn’t remember a time that something like that had happened in the NFL (expect for Eli/Rivers of course) but who would be the candidates since we’re speculating? The Eagles are the only team with 2 first round picks in 2009. My short list of candidates would include the Jets, Seahawks and Packers.

maybe
They aren’t as confident in FWP’s health as they are letting on

putting pressure on Mendenhall to sign?
This is pure speculation, but perhaps Mendenhall’s agent is playing hardball, particularly after Davenport was shown the exit. So signing Jones would put pressure on him to accept a deal. I wouldn’t put it past the Steelers to sign Jones and stick Russell on the practice squad. We could then trade our least performing back to the Bears or another team later.

Crisis over
Bears signed him to a one year deal for the league minimum. I’d have to think he could have gone to a much better team for the league minimum if he had wanted to.

RBs by the dozen
Maybe the market just isn’t that good out there for injury prone rb’s. Decent RBs seem to be available every round of the draft, free agency, the street. Maybe RBs is the Starbucks position – oversaturated.

One idea
I guess it’s all moot now, but my thought, from the Steelers perspective, was that they could have been looking to trade Mendenhall for a solid offensive lineman. That is the only reason that I could see them being interested in Kevin Jones.

whew
well, it seems to me like the FO is just covering their bases and looking at high-ceiling guys, plus if we coulda got jones for the minimum, its not a bad gamble and doesnt mean mendenhall was being shopped.

If I was Jones
I would be very happy in the Bears slot. Beating out Forte vs, some type of table scraps of Parker, Mewelde, Mendy, et al is an easy choice.
