2008 Steelers Roster Predictions
After the exodus of Dookie, Legursky, Lorello, Retkofsy, and Zabransky we now have 82 players on the roster. You can only have 80 players signed maximum during the offseason (plus one NFL Europe player), which basically means we need to cut one more guy before July 28, assuming we sign our rookies. I have projected my 45-man roster, plus inactives (8 or 7 if we make Dixon #46 as a third QB), plus 8 practice squad. Note that Marvin Allen cannot be moved from the Practice Squad. He is the Steelers 2008 NFL Europe player and he must be the 9th player on the Practice Squad. It's fun to guess which guys go into which category. You can see my predictions in table form, after the jump. Let the healthy debate begin:

Hey rose
Who would be our fullback? wasnt C Davis our FB last year. If he is inactive the only person I think could play FB is Russell. Maybe only Maybe could Health MIller and Spaeth play there but I want an every down FB not a fill in. let me know

Or do you feel
That Davis did a bad job last year and feel that a Russell would be a better fit?

i think you have to keep carey davis on the active roster. he was very good last year for us and there is no need for 4 active running backs. i say you kep russell on the inactive list only to be used in the case of an injury to one of the other top backs. we didn’t draft the 2nd best running back in the draft to use him as a fullback and go head to head with the biggest monsters of each team (aka linebackers).

agree
Russell may have talent, but there’s just no carries for him if Mendenhall and FWP are healthy. But, Davis isn’t your prototypical burly LB. He’s not much bigger than Russell. Russell could play the role of FB in certain sets. I do agree though that Rashard shouldnt be getting beaten up too much as a blocker.

Fair enough
I went back and forth over the Davis/Russell thing and decided to keep Russell active. For some reason I think he has a better chance of panning out

well
Not a bad prediction by you, could very well work out that way, because you’re right, we dont have the same FB oriented running game as we did in the Kreider days. So, either Davis or Russell could fill that role. We’ll see who wins, but if Russell makes it, I don’t think he’ll be getting any carries really if theres no injuries. Maybe a few and a catch or two.

I was actually thinking Mendenhall/Russel
Since we are no longer in the Dan Krieder-mold of standard fullbacks, I was thinking a downshift shift in that position insofar as Mendenhall/Russel can get the job done.

question
Could Allen theoretically be bumped from PS to the active roster? Or does he have to stay on PS all year.
by Blitzburgh on Jul 2, 2008 4:37 PM EDT 0 recs
He must stay on Practice Squad all year.
That is why he is the 9th-man exception to the PS. I don’t believe there are any exceptions. There are only 16 teams in the NFL each year who get to have this added luxury. It is the AFC North’s turn this year. Because not every team gets to have one of these guys, they are strict about not giving some teams a competetive advantage by allowing them to move this player from the Practice Squad.

By the way
I just sent Blitz my Excel spreadsheet. If any of you want a copy I’ll bet he’ll send it to you. You can then move players around and play with it yourself up until the season.

A couple thoughts
Good stuff MR. I doubt they’d cut Hills (PS is unprotected), and I doubt Capizzi will last on our PS if we cut him. I’d look for Essex to be cut and one of those two to take his spot. Guys like Clement, Rucker, Williams, and Bailey would all be good PS’ers. I wouldn’t be shocked if Williams made the roster as a DB and redshirted, kind of like Stapleton did. If any of the DL’s (Clement, Jordan, Prince) show anything, they picked the right team to try out for, and Kirch, Eason, or McBean could get tossed aside. Let’s hope one of them shows something. I could see Marion losing his spot to one of the players I mentioned above, simply because there’s so much uncertainty for the future of the lines. We can make do with Moore and co, unless Marion is really really good.
As for Russell, I see him mostly as an insurance guy, and with 3 ahead of him, I don’t think we need to suit him up. He’ll get some time if we have some injuries.

Good point on Hills needing protection
I don’t know that Capizzi will need it, but I am definitely going to bump Hills over a column or two.

Capizzi
Didn’t KC take him last year? They would probably snatch him back if we put him the PS.

Jim did say that Hills can inform the team if somebody approaches Hills to sign him. That way, they could bump him to the active roster and protect him.

Why would Hills inform the Steelers?
If some other team came along and offered to bump his salary? Wouldn’t it make better sense to protect him either on the 45 or 8 inactives?
by maryrose on Jul 2, 2008 6:35 PM EDT 0 recs
Protecting the protection
It’s a real possibility that someone we cut (and want on the PS) will get picked up by another team. We’ve said before that we have rather good depth on the OL, just not a great starting 5. We have 11 guys who may be worth a spot, so we’ll have to make some tough cuts. I think it will be a tough battle between Hills, Capizzi, and Essex for those last 1-2 spots. Things would be made easier if the staff deems Mahan expendable, but he’s still a good backup to have if we don’t care about his salary.
Essex has proven he’s a decent backup, but I doubt he’ll get resigned next year. If Starks is a backup swing tackle, there’s really no need to keep Essex if they see promise in Capizzi or Hills. A lot depends on what the FO plans to do with all our FA OT’s.

I guess the key to making it to the training camp roster...
... is to not have a last name ending in “sky.” Kind of sad to see Zabransky go - he displayed a lot of leadership qualities in that Boise State game vs. Oklahoma. Of course, we don’t need a 4th QB. Maybe he’ll go to Tampa Bay, where they have, like, 98 quarterbacks. Or maybe to Chicago, where they have, like, zero.
On another note, I think Humpal will be added to the special teams coverage unit. He appears to be a hustler, and the football gods know we need hustlers on special teams.
by TURFgeek on Jul 3, 2008 11:47 PM EDT 0 recs
yes
Good call. Loved Z man too.
Also think Humpal has a good shot to make the team and fill some lanes on special teams. Jim Wexell, in an interview here on the site awhile back, said Humpal was a high hurdles runner up and state champ in wrestling in his homestate of Iowa. As Wexell said, thats an interesting combination of athleticism. I think he could impress too.
