Casey on PUP

Dave Lolley is reporting that Big Snack failed to complete the required number of 100 yard sprints (he needed to do 8 and could only make it through 5) and thus Tomlin placed him the physically unable to perform list.  While this is probably not a huge deal - Casey's failed these sorts of things before and come out to have a great season - it doesn't exactly sooth many of the concerns at D line; if for some reason Casey can't perform this year we have a decided lack of depth (though we all love Hoke).

Anyway, here's the link to Lolley's site

So....any thoughts?

Two Corrections:

1) It’s Dale Lolley and not Dave. My bad.

2) Troy P and Kemo were also placed on the PUP list for minor injuries. So, all in all this is probably a non-story. Still, unsettling.

It's not 2003

I hope Hampton has it in him to repeat the impressive comeback from the embarrassment he had in 2003. But it’s 5 years later, he’s signed his big contract and he doesn’t have the fear of coach Cowher to drive him.

hmm

Good pts about how others are on list for minor dings, but agree, not settling. Guess we can write off the possibility of him coming back to camp this year in tip top shape. Preseason is pretty long though, so he has some time to get himself into the shape he knows he needs to be in.

Hampton looked very much out of shape when he arrived here at Saint Vincent College.
It’s too early to get real disappointed but this is not the kind of news that any of us were looking for out of Big Snack. If he’s ready to have a really good year, it could be a long season for the front 7.

by cgolden on Jul 28, 2008 8:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think this is a good thing

From Hampton’s account, he’s in the same condition that he was last year, only he didn’t have to run the drill. Maybe that’s what Tomlin is worried about. Hampton’s play dropped off some last year, and he wasn’t “eating up blockers” the way he usually does. Last year, Tomlin was the new guy coming in to coach a veteran team with some players who were almost the same age as him. He wouldn’t have done this last year, and rightly so. This year, though, he knows the players and they know him. It’s easier for him to criticize players, to call them out, and apparently to publicly embarrass them without risking a mutiny. He’s making it clear that no one is exempt from putting in a full effort or from being in top condition.

In other news, Troy Polamalu’s new workout regimen sucks.

troy

Better holistically kick some ass this year.

by steelguy99 on Jul 28, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not good, but not horrible

At his age, conditioning is a MUST for casey, it is not good that he is obviously not spending his own time in the offseason to do much physically, but it is a normal thing for overweight veterans, and hopefully Tomlin is letting him know this is unacceptable. A fat hampton is still decent, but if he is in shape(as much as he can be) he is pretty damn great.
Also, despite minor injuries, the other two completed their runs, Maafala’s joke about Troy’s regimen aside.

by tkired on Jul 28, 2008 10:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

also

hampton being out of shape will make injury more likely, and while Hoke can handle spot duty, there’s 0 behind him.

No excuses!

Big Snack let me down personally. With all the criticisms about lack of depth on the D line and the weaknesses that were exposed last season…Hampton did the opposite of what I expected of him. Reportedly, he’s said its “no big deal.” My question to him, will it be “no big deal” when we are counting on you to show conditioning and stamina in the crunch? No more sliding Casey. Your team mates count on you. Your coaches count on you. We fans count on you.

He's out of shape?

You’d never know it from the film. He’s so chiseled.

by Desroko on Jul 28, 2008 11:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

fresh

he also won’t have any of the wear from the hitting in training camps, so as long as he gets conditioned by the start of season, he’ll be fine.

Im not worried

about the Big Snack Attack. Hes always been a fat bastard coming into camp. As long as hes still unmovable at the point of attack, his job is done.

Lets not forget

That there may be some domestic problems involved. It wouldn’t be the first time someone was knocked off stride at work because of troubles at home. The difference is that if it happened to us the whole world doesn’t know about it.

Apples and Oranges (I hope)

I’m probably wrong, and I know it’s about conditioning and stamina, but does anyone expect Casey to have to run 100 yards once…never mind eight times. I can think of a few times that I’ve seen him deep behind the line or out to the sideline chasing after prey and it looks wrong-kind of freaky, but he gets to them when he needs to most of the time. As long as he can pop up and fight and plug the run, then he can leave off the track events in my opinion.

by SCSteeler on Jul 28, 2008 7:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Big Snack

True he won’t have to run 100 yards, but he does have to have the stamina to play four quarters and be as strong in the fourth as he was in the first. I don’t give him a pass at all for being a lineman. It’s about stamina, not running a 10 second 100 yard dash. All he had to do was finish, not set speed records.

by cgolden on Jul 29, 2008 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

shape

Not to mention that it would be nice to actually improve in the off-season instead of slide. If you buy into big snack’s story, you can only get in football shape playing football. That’s well and good, but I know everyone would be a lot happier if the 30 pounds he put on was all muscle. Getting bigger and stronger is not a disadvantage at NT as far as I know.

by steelguy99 on Jul 29, 2008 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, but maybe he'll go all "Eye of the Tiger" now...

Good points from both of you guys. I just have a hard time imagining such a load of a man even jogging 800 yards. I think on the PG site they were intimations that he didn’t even have to do the run (true or am I crazy?) Also there were hints that this could be related to giving the man a break from camp and keeping a roster spot availble a little longer, but I don’t buy that. I think its probably more coach putting his mark on and somebody letting the offseason slide – as y’all have suggested – still let’s hope at least it gets him real mad and he comes back slimmer, trimmer, and mad as heck to take out Clubber Lang for good.

by SCSteeler on Jul 29, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fwiw, Shaun Rogers showed up to camp at 359, 1 pound lighter than what the team had pegged for his “ideal weight.” Oh, he also tipped a Quinn pass at the line of scrimmage, intercepted it, and ran it back 10 yards (a la that play last year against… Denver?)

by kwoog on Jul 28, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So Quinn threw an INT? Sure sounds like he was worth a first rounder!

by BadMaafala on Jul 29, 2008 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ha, it was described more as a great play by the defender than a mistake by the QB… ie, it wasn’t a a misread… it was just the Division’s new best nosetackle doing his thing! ;D

by kwoog on Jul 29, 2008 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s going to be crazy when the browns win every game this season because they are just that awesome.

by steelguy99 on Jul 29, 2008 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t really say anything like this, nor have I ever. In a thread about your nosetackle’s possible conditioning problems, I posted that your rival’s nosetackle has come into camp under weight and is already making athletic plays.

But yes, it is going to be crazy. I can’t wait!

by kwoog on Jul 29, 2008 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You didn’t say it, I did. Browns: 19-0.

by steelguy99 on Jul 29, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha, yes, someone did, actually: a Browns front office guy was annonymously quoted as saying, “he’s probably the best defensive lineman in the division,” after seeing him in Training Camp this week.

I know it’s totally too soon to care, but it’s certainly not a crazy suggestion. He’s two years younger, has two fewer Pro Bowls, and played for a perenial loser not a perenial winner (often a big factor in the recognition they get). Put it this way, there’s not DL in the division you could trade straight up and get Rogers. Not even Hampton.

by kwoog on Jul 29, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm interesting

I completely understand why a team official would label him as that and when he’s in shape and motivated (which he seems to be), he might be. The idea of the straight-up trade is interesting though, I’d love to hear a GM talk honestly about if Hampton for Rogers is a good trade. I bet some would take intangibles into the equation and lean toward Hampton, considering that Rogers doesn’t have the best track record (but you do a good job of refuting that too).

by cgolden on Jul 29, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree it would be an interesting trade. I also don’t think there’s any way the Steelers would do it either, for good reason.

As always, I’m just continuing to lurk around, to stir the pot is all. I’m not trying to offend. I wouldn’t like to go to a Browns site and read annoingly laudatory comments about Hampton. If it gets to that point, let me know and I’ll stop.

by kwoog on Jul 29, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think you’re offending anyone here and I think it’s pretty clear that you’re not trying to. You’ve been really good about stating you’re opinion about your Browns in a respectable manner. It’s kind of nice to have some ‘enemy’ perspective once in a while.

by cgolden on Jul 29, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You should give talking trash on another team’s board a hiatus until your team has done something. I’m sure we can all come up with stuff from training camp like “Player X made a great diving catch against tight coverage”. I’m also sure there’re negative posts on the Browns site, and I could tell the Browns fans how much better the Steelers QB or LB’s are.

You can speculate all you want, but based on what they have done on the field so far in their careers, Hampton and Ngata are better 3-4 run stuffers than Rogers. Rogers is more of a schizophrenic Albert Haynesworth who hasn’t been part of a top 15 run defense since 2004, when they were…. 15th. People don’t run on Hampton or Ngata. I’ll guarantee you the Ravens wouldn’t make the trade for Rogers. I don’t know about us, but only because Hampton may be nearing the end of his career.

Cool man, I have the answer to my question above. See ya on the 14th!

by kwoog on Jul 29, 2008 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, stick around

Feel free to talk the trash Kwoog. I love it. You do at least stay humble about the needing to win to talk. I don’t mind speculation. Keep it up. To be fair at this point I’ll take hampton and for that matter I’d never give up A. Smith for Rodgers if we’re talking all d-line. Age may be an issue, but Smith’s one of the best linemen in the league and plays every game hard.

hell yes

I love trashtalking with Browns fans. I am proud of the rivalry that exists with the two teams. I was pissed when Shart Modell moved the team and happier than pigs in shit when they came back. Look at rivalries like the ones in the NFC North, or Fla-Fla St, OSU-Mich. It’s awesome when you are a part of something that has lasted decades. As long as there are no personal attacks I’m all for it. The Browns suck! (but make me nervous this year)

by steelerark on Jul 29, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am very concerned about Hampton

I’ve stated before that a nose tackle can get away with a pot belly when he is 26, but not 31. To some extent you need that belly. But when the pot is as big as Casey’s, you can fall right off the table instead of gradually declining. I’ll bet Tomlin is worried about the same thing; thus the PUP embarrassment. Baloney on the domestic problems. Hampton should have enough pride in what he does to come into camp in shape. That’s his entire job and he gets paid very well to do it. I’m not chicken little here, but with last season’s performance and then Sunday’s fiasco, this could spell alot of trouble. Where is this guy’s head?
