Sepulveda done for the year
According to Dale Lolley's blog Punter Daniel Sepulveda is out for the season with a torn ACL. The Steelers picked up Paul Ernster of waivers to replace him. They didn't even have a second punter in camp to compete with him. Bummer.

wtf!?!?
How does a punter tear his ACL on the second day of training camp? For crying out loud.

Same ACL he had injured in college.
Maybe he rushed a recovery….maybe the policy of drafting injuries didn’t work out this time. Said on another thread on this – DANG!

The Ernster
I think it was torn, and he finally got it checked out. He was feeling discomfort.
It seems like Ernster hasn’t punted in the NFL, but he did lead the league in kick-off avg. in 2006. That seems like a good deal to me – a guy to complement Reed and maybe a punter too.

Wrong about the no punting

If I am not mistaken
Ernster was the Browns punter on the very play that they were flagged for four penalties last season in the opener. He was cut loose after that one game in which he punted seven times for a booming 36-yard average. He since has been cut loose by two more teams. And this is our guy this year? Jiminy Christmas.

Did he share a taxi with Frye?
The Medina Gazette from Sept 10th 2007 says, “Ernster dropped the snap on his first punt for the Browns exactly 61 seconds into their 34-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, setting in motion a comical series of events on Sunday afternoon.”
What an audition…
Still the NFL bio says no blocks. Looking to the “positives”.

what is up
with us getting Browns punters who have a terrible avg and ‘no blocks’? I can hear it now. “In to punt for the Steelers is Paul Ernster, who has not had any blocks in 47 attempts.” “Here comes Ernster to punt again, he hasn’t had a block in 48 attempts.” “In the tradition of Steeler punter Chris Gardocki, Ernster comes on to punt, having never been blocked in 49 attempts.” Great.

At least he is not so bad that the announcers won’t be saying “In for the kickoffs is Paul Ernster, who amazingly hasn’t had any blocked kickoffs in 47 attempts”. Then we are really in trouble.
Man, this sucks. I liked danny boy…

When I heard he was the browns’ punter, I thought back to week 1 last year. Thanks for the confirm on that.
so the attrition begins

Oh, man.
I was in Latrobe, and I was wondering why the Puntisher wasn’t doing much other than taking snaps. This explains it.

yeah
I read your post after hearing about Sepulverizer. It was a good (but sad) example of dramatic irony. Nice post, btw.

Redskins has two...
There’s a good article on the punter competition in Washington. Both punters seem more than adequate, so maybe we pick up one of them in lieu of Ernster. Don’t like the karma associated with that guy…

I don’t like the karma that former Browns bring either. Good pt.

That's a good point
They’ll probably stick with their rookie Ray Guy winner, which means we could get their more experienced guy, Frost. It would be nice if they cut him with the first round of cuts. I’d rather not depend on Ernster.

Sigh
Well if one starter had to go on IR with an ACL injury, it could have been worse. Too bad though…

This is a problem
How are we supposed to believe the special teams will be better when our starting punter is on the IR and his replacement played maybe 2 games last year with 2 different teams? They need to find someone else to compete with this joker.

now's the time to try the never punt strategy
In all seriousness, this is unfortunate, and here’s to Sep coming back healthy next year.

I’m willing to see if Jeff can hit 80 yard field goals.

I can see it now....
Somewhere down the line this season….
After Ben is sacked for a 15 yard loss (sack video thing on the mind) – 4th and 20 and they go for it again and again. Still, if we don’t punt then we won’t suffer the punt returns…
Let’s just score on every possesion…genius!

SEP
I read that the discomfort Sep was feeling this training camp he had most of the year last season too. He was very solid last year, imagine his punting at 100%. i hope he recovers quickly and returns to his job next season
