Preseason Game #2 - Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills

The Bills just marched down the field on a 10 play 66 yard TD drive, punctuated by a Trent Edwards throw to Robert Royal. The Bills lead 7-0.

Pittsburgh looked good on its first series, but consecutive holding penalties stalled the drive before Big Ben ended it with his first INT of 2008.

That was Spaeth. He looks a bit stronger this year.

Cant see the game on TV

Blitz, any analysis on the INT? Tipped ball, forced into coverage, great play by db, etc…?

by _ET_ on Aug 14, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

but yes

I will try to give better info if you can’t watch from there.

by Michael Bean on Aug 14, 2008 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

OLine

Big Ben had tons of time. I think he should have taken off there. Waited forever, then threw it away. Bills D looks good.

Lots of penalties so far. The two holding calls and a false start on Heath Miller.

by Michael Bean on Aug 14, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

though i was glad he threw it away instead of taking the sack

by _ET_ on Aug 14, 2008 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

F.

Somebody had a chance at a sack. Edwards then took off for 22 yards on 3rd and 12.

Yeah i'm watching

T. Edwards is looking good and our Def is not.

Seriously, this is a sloppy steelers teams….poor tackling, stupid penalties

by BluegrassSteeler on Aug 14, 2008 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Buffalo just took it down for another score

The Bills OLine is getting a really good push w/out their best lineman in there. Also, the protection is looking solid.

Big play. Hopefully this will spring us. Hines catches have a way of getting us going sometimes.

and even better to see that lol…ball hung alot though

by steelersfan4life on Aug 14, 2008 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

This offense

A lot of weapons. Holmes has been one of the best deep ball receivers for the last 2 years, judging from his ypc.

by _ET_ on Aug 14, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

prefect throw

Nice. I’d guess that might be it for 1st team offense, but good to see them leave on a high note. Ben’s so good. That ball did hang a smidge, but it was still a great throw. Dropped it in there perfectly.

by Michael Bean on Aug 14, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

Big Ben

great timing on the throw. Also a nice pocket for Ben allowing him to look down field

by _ET_ on Aug 14, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously. Still, you’ve got to wonder why there’s so much rust

by BluegrassSteeler on Aug 14, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

some concerns, no doubt

Running game was not that impressive, and lots of penalties. Most of that falls on the OLine imo. They have provided some good pass protection, but not very consistent. Might just be that way a lot of the year. Ben and all his weapons might be able to overcome that inconsistency aloing the line, but we’ll see.

by Michael Bean on Aug 14, 2008 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Oline

Coincidence that this is hartwig’s 1st start. Not that he has been directly responsible, but he is the difference between tonight and the Eagles game.

by _ET_ on Aug 14, 2008 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Rust...

The cynic in me is reminded of the Jekell/Hyde performances last year between home and road games.

But it is only the 2nd game of preseason, hopefully this is a good instructional tool.

He was in there for a while, but he wasn’t trying very hard. I saw him on some stunts (seriously, why would you stunt him?) and he looked slow. It could have been a scheme thing, but he seemed to be running around more than anchoring against the run. If he’s single teamed, he has to show he can make a tackle or we’re not going to stop anyone.

Won’t be able to stick around long. I just saw the score on ESPNNEWS, and wanted to check the site. For those able to watch, is this right? It sounds like our offense has looked good except for Ben’s INT. But, the defense is missing tackles.

Seeing us down 14-0 had me worried about the offense, especially after the NFLN said that we have the worst yards per game in the NFL pre-season so far. I know that was only one game, but I was surprised.

Offense looked pretty good, but had some penalties and Ben’s tipped pass int. Running game wasn’t great. Defense was terrible, especially against the run. We didn’t get much pass rush against the first team, and Edwards picked apart the secondary. Leftwich had an embarassing start.

Catching up...

Thanks guys for all the reaction coverage. Reading here gives you the feel of the game that a plain old report just doesn’t cover.

Sounds like the 1st team D is getting pasted on this one, with some pointing out that they have let scores in on most of their outings so far.

Other than penalties, how did you guys think the OL did and how was Hartwig at center?
I read that FWP didn’t get very muh for 5 carries. Were his runs mostly between or outside the tackles? Also, how did Berger V Ernster go? Just wondering.

Hopefully this loss gives the D something to get mad about.
