Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

PART 2:Tyrone Carter you have to go!

Yesterday I gave some pretty solid reasons as to why Tyrone Carter needs to be cut, traded, thrown into a pit of death, etc. I watched some more games from last season in which he was replacing Troy P at SS.

Star-divide

I am a big advocite of Anthony Smith. He impressed me with his end of season play during his rookie year when he was able to roam the defensive backfield while Troy bounced around the field doing his thing.

I'm just going to put this out there right away, tyrone carter makes the rest of the secondary look bad. There have been a handful of times last season and this preseason where carter would come up toward the line of scrimage and make it look like he was going to blitz, well actually by the way he was standing it was obvious he was not going to blitz. He would come up to far leaving the FS (Smith or Clark) back there to cover two deep zone while carter was attempting to drop back.

Just to show that I'm not saying Smith is a saint I watched the trick play lateral touchdown throw to Gaffeny. Carter played up, showed a blitz, but then was late dropping back. The Pats were playing a twin WR set on Carter's side.  The steelers were playing a Cover 2 with Man underneath. Gaffeny was actually Foote's man, but lets face it a WR will out run a LB anytime. Carter was late getting back and was not able to pass Gaffeny off to Smith who was watching a TE cross infront of him.  Having played Safety myself it is very difficult to see a man do a post from the side of the field you are not covering.

Troy

To tell you the truth I think Troy Polumalu is extremely overated. He hurts the team more or the same amount as Carter. I agree Carter needs to be gone. But when Troy is out their everyone on defense needs to make up for Troys mistakes. He flies around the field like a crazyman and makes other people look bad. The only way he got to the Pro Bowl was because of his hair and rep. He barely played last year and when he was in he was playing with one arm. He and Hampton are one of the most useless players on the team. Well maybe i am exagerating but Hampton gives no effort and Troy misses every tackle because he runs around with his head down. As for Smith I never liked him so get rid of Carter, Smith, and trade Polumalu in a few years.

that's a little harsh..

I disagree with your assessment of Troy. He’s a big part of our D when healthy.
However I do agree that last year he was a Pro Bowler based solely on rep. But isn’t that the trend in most of today’s major sports All-Star selections? It’s a shame to say it but all star teams are popularity contests.

I guess we should forget about..

The acobatic tackles for losses Troy had made while being blocked at the same time. Or the fact that when he is in, he is the #1 concern of the QB. Thye have to find TP before they can execute their play… Yeah at times he’s a little sloppy and should be more durable.

that's an overstatement

Troy may be overrated in that he shouldn’t have been a Pro Bowler last year but when he’s healthy he’s arguably the best player on this defense. Not only is he a disruptive force that offenses must account for but he also leads by example. LeBeau has designed this defense around TP moving all over the place. Do you really think that Troy is just out there doing his own thing and saying “to hell with the gameplan, I’m going to get mine?” Don’t let his ‘balls out’ style of play confuse you as being sloppy or irresponsible.

I think your way off about Troy

I agree that the past few years hes battled injuries, and been a little inconsistent with his tackling, but you cant forget what hes capable of when hes completely healthy. A few years ago he was everywhere, getting interceptions, sacks, improbable open field tackles. Im just saying im a little pissed about his lack of play making recently too but im not ready to ride him off yet. Obviously the franchise believes in him if they invested that much money. He really has to redeem himself this year, or i might be right there with you. As far as Smith and Carter, they are both terrible. Clark is solid in my opinion. When it was Clark and Polamalu healthy at the same time i remember very few big plays.

Hey! Hands off that Polamalu!!!!

I agree that Troy has been missing with either playing hurt or being out hurt lately, but at full speed he is such a disruptive force…that bouncing around is part of the defense y’know. The only thing I see is that he is like a rocket when healthy and is reckless of his own health in some regards. How many concussions has he had? I just hope that he does keep himself at full speed this year and avoids the injuries.

When healthy

A couple of years back Polamalu was great. He was healthy and could make up for mistakes or just his style of play, but now he is banged up and he isn’t in the right position like he was in the past. I am just saying he probally won’t be able to stay healthy with his style of play, which means we either change the way we use him or he will just fade out. OR if I know the Steelers they will do nothing and just change things around him. But another option is he returns to his old self, but I am not sure
