Draft Wishlist for 09
It's never to early to put together a list of things we need for next year. Since we are basically running with the same group of players as last season It's kind of easy to see what we need.
DE: (1st or 2nd round) our D-Line is getting old. We need a DE or a DT (depending how hampton does this year) that can put pressure on the QB on 3rd downs when we drop our LBS back. We need a guy who is such a force that he'll draw double teams each time which will allow our LBs to make plays.
CB: (1st or 2nd round) Shoutdown Corner. We need to find the next Rob Woodson. The Corners we've drafted over the past couple of years have all been late round project players, and the guys we have drafted in the 2nd or 3rd rounds have been less than what they were supposed to be.
FS: (depending on how Smith and Clark do) Pretty much the same as cornerbacks. We need a force at FS. Someone who will destroy anything that dares catch a pass in their area of responsibility.
OL: A solid offensive lineman. Basically to fill any hole we might have at the end of the season, depending how well each of our OL play. I could see us maybe picking up a Center or a Left Tackle if Smith doesn't resign.

BPA
The FO has shown they are really looking to draft the best player available, but we really having some significant needs next year. It will be interesting to see which emphasis wins out.

I suspect it will largely depend on our draft position.
If we win through and take the cake, or get near enough, and have a late pick – we’ll draft for talent. If we go middle to top of the stinky season draft pile, I bet we go with need…and get talented guys at the positions we want…like we got Ben.
Still, you never know. In terms of weapons, the offense looks stacked, so maybe they do some trades, and get a lot of guys to compete with each other for the same positions.

What?!?
are you guys serious?!? a DE in 1st round??? we’ll get a DE in the late rounds….look at elvis dumervill he got drafted late and he got 10+ sacks. no, what we need is a good right tackle. willie colon and max starks wont be good enough. but i do agree with takin CB early.

Yeah
Late round DE’s have been working so well for us recently.

hmm..
Lots of good names on that list.
I personally would love to see us pick up either one of those Oklahoma O-Lineman or a Tyson Jackson out of LSU. However they all may be top 15 picks and I hope we don’t end up drafting that high.

Here's my thoughts
Round 1: Acquire Duke Robinson OG from the Sooners in round one.

then
we work a trade to get a late first round pick (say 28th) and hopefully if he’s still on the board, take LSU’s Tyson Jackson.
Round 2 we take another Gaurd in LSU’s Herman Johnson who is 6-5 350 and has started something like 23 straight games going into 2008… Of course it is still early so we’ll have to see how some of these players rise or fall

Out biggest need on OL is a “LT capable” tackle. We could use a little more depth at guard, but Marvel’s getting older, Colon is a guard, and Starks probably won’t be back. Kemo and Colon would do it for me at guard, with Stapleton as a backup. Drafting another guard (or two) could make the position stronger, but it would mean Colon would be stuck at RT and the future would still be blurry. We need to come out of next year’s draft with a viable replacement for Smith that could play at RT for a few years.
DL is less specific; we just need to get an impact player there at NT or DE (or both). I was hoping Jackson would come out this year, because we might have been able to snag him, but he may go too high for us in 2009.
I doubt we could get 2 firsts and still have our second rounder. We should get a 3rd round comp pick for Faneca, though. We can’t trade comp picks, but we may be more likely to trade our normal 3rd rounder with a fourth for another second or our 1st and 3rd to get a shot at Oher, Jackson, or someone really good that we need. This year, we needed depth in the draft and got it. Next year, we’ll need a few impact players who can contribute early.

Exceptions
Here are the only two exceptions I would be happy to see drafted instead of our rule of thumb by going after a defensive or offensive lineman.
ILB: Rey Maualuga USC, 6-2 260-Kick ass monster out of the LB core who would more than suffice for Farrior or Foote if either were to leave. Joey Porter-like mentality, and possibly the hardest hitting LB to come out of NCAA in years.
CB: Vontae Davis Illinois 6-0 200, SF TE Vernon Davis’ little brother who is said to be a dominant corner and an impact player right away.

We need offensive line forget D line til later rounds they need to invest some big money in some O line

fortunately
from what I’ve read there are a bunch of good players next year who could play along a 3-4 line, whereas this current draft year was light on players with that kind of ability.

How the Steelers Draft
Historically the steelers do draft best available, but in the last few years they really have been doing a great job of mixing best available with what they need. They take the best available of what they need more often then not. Also in the last ten years they have stopped taking high bust positions and the one year wonders, I think they will take a defensive lineman in the next upcoming draft (hopefully it will be the last pick of the first round if you know what i mean). i dont think it will be a dt however because hampton is still in his prime (30 years old) and they would go for a nose tackle which decent ones coming out of college are few and far between. if one fell in the lap in the later rounds they would probably jump on it. also them drafting a corner in the first round isnt likely, the last corner they drafted in the first round was 1997(chad scott). also the seconday isnt that bad, mcfadden is improving and should be a number two guy by next year and as long as troy is in the secondary he will make everyone in the backfield better let alone everyone else on the field.
