Orpheus Roye...

...signed by the Steelers.  It's in the local papers as of an hour ago.  It is probably not a big lift to the quality of the defensive line, given his age and the fact he was released by the Eagles, but he cannot be much worse than Eason and the other backups.  If he can spell Big Snack, along with Hoke, then maybe it's a good thing.  Importantly, adding to depth cannot hurt, as the Patriots have shown time and time again.  I wonder what this means for the prospects of Booger McFarland making this team...

Cut by the Browns too...

Why doesn’t that fill me with anticipation?

Hopefully he has enough left in the tank to be a solid backup.

at least he was cut by a team with a (supposedly) good DL.

Former Steeler

So he has some experience in this Defense.

Good Move

I like the move – He’s a big body with Steeler Experience – plus the shelf life on DTs seems pretty good. I think he’ll be a nice piece moving forward.

not to mention he may bring with him a nice tidbit

or two of knowledge of the browns playbook.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Always

like when we get a player from a team we are going play. Even if only for a cup of coffee, you can usually garner good info from these guys with knowledge of an opponents play book and huddle.
This is the type of “cheating” that I condone as opposed to what Bellicheat* and the Pats* do/did on a regular basis.

Question

Was Roye picked up by and then released by the Eagles, or was he just released by the Browns?

BTW – I like the move, which is to say, we need all the help we can get on D-line and having a solid vet come off the bench and play some downs each game would be great – assuming he is still in football shape.

From what I could find

It looks like Roye has been a decent starter, but riddled with injuries lately. He had a decent number of tackles last year for how little he played, which tells me he hasn’t completely dropped off. He’s obviously not a great solution, but if he somehow stayed healthy, he could contribute. Does anyone know if he played more DE or NT?

By the way, he was cut before the Browns made their DL trades, so that speaks a little more loudly about his injury issues.

by BadMaafala on Aug 18, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

He was an end w/ us.

by kwoog on Aug 18, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

not necessarily

they could’ve cut him in advance of the trades, knowing they would make them, and needing the cap room.

by TheMostViolentTeam on Aug 18, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He was cut months before the trades, in February I believe.

by kwoog on Aug 18, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

They would have held onto him if they thought he was worth much. I don’t know what his contract was. That could have contributed to being cut.

Word from the Post Gazette article

was that he was let go because he was carrying a 3 million dollar salary. Makes sense. If you pick up fresh meat on the line, which comes at a heavy price, you don’t want to pay a 35 year old back-up 3 million – you cut him. e Also he, had knee surgery in the off season. So if the knee holds up, and they aren’t paying him a lot, he could be a very smart addition for them.

BTW he was listed as End for the browns as well.

Browns fans were hoping to bring him back for cheap. Not that we needed him, but if a starter goes down, it would’ve been nice depth.

That’s all he should be for the Steelers though: depth. The past few years, he couldn’t go a couple of games without suffering an injury. And with how poor our defensive line has been in years’ past, that meant starting a Simon Fraser (yikes!).

No problem. I actually got tired of something the past five years or so: the CBS broadcast announcers during games would always say “the former Pittsburgh Steeler!” when referring to Roye.

Now that he’s back with Pittsburgh, how much do you wanna bet that they start calling him “the former Cleveland Brown!”…lol…

At least your punter didn’t have the longest streak of unblocked punts in NFL history…

or did he already have that record with yinz?

by BadMaafala on Aug 19, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe I remember hearing that about ol’ Gardocki when he was with us…

by kwoog on Aug 19, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, yeah, that was another one I forgot about. With every boot, the announcers had to mention it…it got to the point where I wanted someone to block one already.
