Steelers biggest rival in AFC North Part 2

Did anyone catch the Clowns last night? What a joke! This is the team that is suppoed to challenge the Steelers for the AFC North title? I think the most telling stat of the night was when they flashed record of the oppoentents the clowns beat (.3xxx) vs. the ones they lost to (.5xxx) which include 2 wins by the Stellars. As I have said before, they were the beneficiery of a last place schedule. They are playing a 2nd place schedule this year....I am also hearing excuses such as some of their players did not dress, like Shaun Rogers, and Bedwards. I think their biggest concern is really their cornerback play. 2 easy TDs by the G-men's 4th string WR. I can just see us linining up 4 wide and BB dropping bombs on them all day.

In other clown news, I heard the bungles are brining back chris henry after they relasesed him. Enough said.

Watch out for the Ravens!!

Rivals

Preseason – I don’t think we should take the Browns lightly. They should be a tough team to beat. I’m really hoping they implode – Lewis plays old, Anderson takes a step back, Braylon and Kellen bitch – but I don’t know if that will happen. If they are on their game they will be a very tough team to beat. Hopefully Big Ben will be able to pick apart a Secondary that should be weak.

yep

I wouldn’t sleep on the Browns just because they struggled against the SB Champs, especially considering that their best player (B Edwards) didn’t play.

Smiling on a partly cloudy day

I agree, but I’m still smiling. I don’t know how they are going to shore up that secondary.

I’ve been touting the (starting) secondary for a while, but Wright looked awful last night. Just god awful.

And so did our OL, actually. The Giants DL is still sick.

All in all, anything to further humble these guys prior to Sept 7 won’t upset me too much, given the ridiculous amount of hype we’ve received. The talent is there.

Brown pants were sweet, I thought.

Brown Pants?

I just thought DA crapped himself.

Seriously though, I can’t say I was disappointed to see the Browns crew get sent back down to earth, but it’s just preseason, and the Steelers haven’t exactly looked like world beaters either. I’m looking forward to some meaningful football, and it won’t get much more meaningful than that week 2 game.

Giants DL

I’m not scared of Eli Manning but I am really scared of their DL killing Ben

Seriously

Did you see that hit by Osi? Apparently it’s not a good idea to let him go unblocked.

not ready for prime time

I see the Browns starting 0-2 this year. Steelers schedule is ridiculous, that is our competition this year.

We have to beat the Browns twice, and win atleast 3 out of 4 against the Ravens and Bengals to have a shot at winning the division – likely the only route to playoffs this year.

As a result look for a very, very intense game against the Browns week 2, should be a fun game.

Anderson and Wright

should be ashamed of that performance. Those duck-fart passes by Anderson werent even close. I think Brady Quinn is better than Anderson, not just basing this on last night either. Im not being exact with these stats but last year Anderson was at like 56% with like 18 int`s, and a QB rating of like 83. I think the talent around him got him all those yards and TD`s. He crumbled in big games last year, and he looked like he was going to cry last night with every incompletion. Quinn would run the offense alot better in my opinion. What do you think Kwoog? any love for Quinn?

Now on to my bashing of Eric Wright. Eric Wright……you are not good. If i were the Browns i would be very concerned right now with the secondary. I know its only preseason but the secondary was being torched by randoms. Imagine what they are going to do against Hines and Holmes. Plus Chad and Hooshamama twice a year.

Good luck Browns. Your schedule was trash last year and its going to take Anderson being as good or better this year to contend. Even with Rogers, your D couldnt stop an 80 year old woman.

I’m not one of those DA-bashing Quinbots, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Derek has multiple years better than last year, to be honest. However, I’m also weary of his decision making (one of the worst in football according to KC Joyner). By the same token, I’m worried Quinn doesn’t have the arm strength to execute this offense, and in the Cleveland/Lake Effect climate. Basically, I’m a “let this QB thing play out” kind of guy.

Wright’s performance shocked me last night. He looked like he did in the first two games last year, not the solid corner who played the rest of the season. I’ve posted on here many sources that use words like “future star” and “stud” to describe him. That certainly wasn’t showcased last night, against what, 5th string receiver?!

However, when it’s all said and done, the OL concerned me most. I know the Giants DL is as good as there is, but that’s supposed to be the strength of our team. I’ve said the Line is overrated when it comes to run blocking (which was definitely apparent), but they couldn’t pass block either.

In the end they looked unprepared and what’s almost worse, they were easily rattled. Like I said elsewhere, I’m almost glad this happened, so that it possibly humbles them and takes away from some of the ridiculous expectations that they’re under.

p.s. “duck-fart” made me lol

Agreed

I agree with here we go. The steelers must win the conference games because I am expecting the division to go down to the wire and it may take a tie breaker again. This is one of those years the team that wins the division will have to beat the opponents that they should beat and they must not let a lay up win get away from them.

Here we go

Thanks for the props on the name but i have to admit I saw it on a t-shirt. I really want the shirt bad!!! it looks like it is from the 70’s but in fact its a 75th anniversity shirt. I would have asked the fellow wearing it but my parents know him and he is a bit slow mentally and I figured that he wouldn’t know where he got it, but I shouldn’t have assumed and just should’ve asked. Has anyone seen this shirt? His was gold with writing on the the left breast that I believe said Steeler Super Fan and had the 75th emblem and black & gold till I am dead & cold on the back. Any help would be appreciated

Power schedule

As all of you fan can see, the Steelers schedule consist of a bunch of opponets who bring a power brand of football. Now I don’t have to go down the schedule, but my point is that due to our old and depreiciating D- line, I think being able to contend week end and weelk out will be very difficult. And yes, we have our own power play style but this will be pretty tough. And I think our O-line will be fine but our D-line is really going to show its geriatric tendencies especially dealing with the run. Please dear fans Chime in on this!

by C-Mac on Aug 20, 2008 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Its preseason!

Remember you’re looking at preseason games here, hold on to your hat for the regular season!

I know, I know, the D-line faded down the stretch last year. BUT, that was without Smith AND Polamalu. Does anyone remember how the D-line looked the first half of ’07? They looked really good!

We need to win games throughout the season this year, divisional etc, but still need to peak in December and January. So it will be an especially long season due to the schedule.

The best defense is a good offense. If the offense can put up points early, and lots of ’em, those quality opponents we have this year will have to air it out and become one dimensional. Hopefully we start looking like the quality opponent to them.

Time will tell, it is along season and hopefully Roye will provide some needed depth this year.

Our D line

Yeah its a little old but comon. These are the same guys that consistently shut down some of the best running games in the league. Up until the end last year nobody could run on us. Then Smith goes down, Troy is a big part of run D, he wasnt in playing shape. I just think some of us Steeler fans are spoiled to be honest. We have so much depth at some positions that it really sticks out when when one area is a little thin. Look around at some of the top teams in the league. Some are one or two players away from the whole year being tarnished. Say the Cowboys for example. What if T.O. goes down? Season over. So if one of our very few D-lineman go down, yeah it would suck, but it wouldnt mean our season were over either. Now if Ben goes down its a different story.

Lacks for people chiming in but,

You all still fail to address the opponents who play a power brand of football. And the same philisophy can be used by the opposition (herewegosteelers) about “the best defense is a good offense”, and I certainly agree. But this is a game of attrition, especially this year. remember, I’m a big time fan so I’m with you all. Just some thoughts. What are yours that includes all members

by C-Mac on Aug 21, 2008 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

As I have said before, they were the beneficiery of a last place schedule.

Your point about last year’s strength of schedules is borderline worthless. The two teams play the same exact teams, every year, with the exception of two games. Last year, the Browns faced Oakland and Houston, compared to the Steelers’ opponents of Denver and Jacksonville. The Browns’ 1-1 record vs. the Steelers’ 0-2 record against unique opponents accounted for a whopping 1 game in the standings. For a fair comparison, the Browns were 9-3 against common opponents with the Steelers, while the Steelers were 8-4, but as you know, the Steelers swept the season series.

Steelers schedule is ridiculous, that is our competition this year.

The Browns schedule is also “ridiculous”, as again, they have only two unique opponents when excluding head-to-head matchups. The Steelers have the Patriots and Chargers, while the Browns have the Bills and Texans, a decided advantage towards the Browns, but again… that only accounts for 1/8 of the season, hardly enough to make the difference significant.

There’s no sense in arguing which teams within the same division have the easier schedule. If you want to talk about one team or another having an easier out-of-division schedule, compare teams from different divisions. While the Steelers/Browns/Bengals/Ravens have to face the AFC South and NFC East (in which both divisions produced both wildcards in their respective conference) this year, the Patriots are gifted the AFC West and NFC West divisions… hardly an even deal as far as strength of schedule goes.

You know Selig? Ombudsman.

NE schedule, etc...

It’s like they’re being given the chance for the playoffs. I hope to heck there is a turnover out there and those divisions buck up and play like they mean it. There’s something afoot here! Call in the detectives! I smell a rat….

Seriously though, we play the Texans (AFC South) this year – first game. The Browns play the Broncos from the West this year (who at least one poster considers a threat this year – right PsychoS? – hope you’re right in that game at least!)

I think what folks are saying is not so much that the difference between the Steelers’ and Browns ’ schedule as that this year both teams are playing against a tougher lot. Most folks round here seem to think that the Browns will not weather the rougher road this year.

by SCSteeler on Aug 22, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Just to clear up a minor point

There is no flexibility in the NFL schedule whatsoever. No one gets to lobby for this opponent or that. It is deterministic. You can predict with 100% accuracy next year’s schedule from this year’s final standings.

Division – 2 games each w/ 3 opponents
Conference – One division within your conference on a rotating basis (North, South, East, West, whatever, its a static progression) – This year we get the AFC South.
League – One division from the other conference on a rotating basis. – This year we get the NFC East, probably the toughest division in football. (You’ve got to play good teams to be a good team, right?)

With those three aspects, you have 14 games, and will play every team in your conference at least once every 3 years, and every team in the other conference exactly once every 4 years.

The last two games are filled by your final standing in your division. You play the team that finished at the same rank in the other two divisions that you aren’t already playing in your conference. Baltimore finished last in the AFC North last year, and are already playing the whole AFC South, just like us. Their other opponents will be Miami and Kansas City, who both finished last in their respective divisions.

Not trying to pick on you, but some ppl on the board seem to be confused about how this works, and I hope this clears it all up.

Sorry to be confusing...

I know there’s no flexiblity…should have put in a ;) or two in there to show I was kidding about the conspiracy angle…….although with those guys, if anyone could do it…….. ;)

by SCSteeler on Aug 25, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

1/8?

Yeah but 1/8 means 2 games. And it only takes 1 game to win the division title. 8-8 vs 10-6 makes a big difference. And while I don’t think bitching about schedule is helpful I’d sure rather play bills and texans than Pats and Chargers for 2/16 games. It matters, lets not pretend it doesn’t.
