Offensive Struggles

Lolley reports that Tomlin was frustrated at team peformance last night after all three offensive teams couldn't score in 15 tries in the red zone drill last night...noting that Ben missed Spaeth twice in the endzone.   This begs the question as to whether the defense is just outperforming the offense...or otherwise.  In a backs on backers drill apparently Timmons blew everyone away other than FWP, who was able to stand him up.

Did any of our camp watchers notice the o-line play on this drill, or were there other issues here?

I have been anxiously searching for news on what happened last night.
All I can find is one measly reporter’s video on Tomlin stating he wasn’t happy with the team’s “execution”. Although he did say that the intensity was there so everythings not so bad.
Maybe our defense is just going to be this good…?

or maybe

Our offense is going to continue struggling in the red zone, like the second half of last year. I sure hope not, cause it was a huge Achilles heel in several importan games down the stretch and in the playoffs.

sure hope they don't struggle in the red zone any more

As Hines said himself: Ben’s got all the weapons, there’s no more excuses to be made for our offense. With a nice mix of Thunder and Lightning (Rush-Hard & FWP) and our extremely deep receiving core that features a specific red zone target in Limas Sweed, not to mention our two stud TE’s who are both receiving threats at 6’6” and 6’7”. The steelers have no reason to be denied from scoring while in the red zone this season…well actually there may be one reason..(hint: O-Line)

In The Red Zone

the O line NEEDS to dominate. You have to be able to get the tough yards in football. Hope they fix this. When you run the ball good things happen.

i've said before...

this defense we have will be historically good. they were on pace last year until injuries set in. this defense will be amazing.

Goalline

Anyone remember the days when we got the ball inside the 5 yard line it wasn’t a matter of ‘if’ we would score but how?!

1 yd dash by 36!

Was that in 2004 when the Bus had that string of 1 yd touchdowns? Yes I remember that fondly.

I agree with TMVT

This defense has the chance to be exceptional even by Pittsburgh standards. Also the defense tends to be ahead of the offense at this time of the year. And, working against such a solid defense will only make the offense better in the long run.

I’m trying not to get too jazzed up. Our LBs should be awesome, and our CBs pretty good. Our D-line is questionable in depth, injury potential, and weight issues. Our safeties have the potential to be very mediocre if injuries kick in for Clark and Troy.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

True, but injuries are always a possibility. It’s just part of football.

I don’t think that incredibly obvious points add much to the conversation. But then, I did point out and got a response after saying that our aging/old and injured last year DL, and injured last year and now safeties are prone to injuries, so maybe they are helpful.

Well, I am known for often stating the obvious, so you wouldn’t be the first to point that out. :)

Also, I reread your comment and realized that I missed the whole point, which is to be cautious in our optimism. I can definitely agree with that. I’ve never gone into a game feeling confident of victory, because of all of the upsets that I’ve seen (Steelers and otherwise). On the other hand, that’s why there’s always hope when we’re the underdog.

Sorry steelguy99 but,

I’m already jazzed up!!!
Our defense sounds like it is going to be filled with playmakers and speed. Two very exciting things to watch in a defense IMO.
I can’t wait to see a sneak peak of what we are throwing at other teams this Friday, even if it’s merely one series of 1st team D. I’m pumped.
