Steelers Question of the Week: Mike Tomlin
This week's question comes after several Steelers players could not finish a few of the practices last week in Latrobe. Several noteable veterens in addition to rookie wideout Limas Sweed could not participate in the afternoon practices because of hammies and other bodily aches. I'm most concerned about the rookies, and my point is this; for the second year in a row, the Steelers rookies have had injury problems before the season began. In '07 it was Lawrence Timmons and now its both Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed, (I'm speaking of Mendenhall's mini-camp injury). My question is this, with the number of training camp injuries growing by the day, do you think Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is going too hard on the players?
My second question has very little to do with football, but it's something that has been bothering me for some time now. A few years ago, (I believe it might have been during or shortly after the Steelers 21-10 victory over the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL), I remember seeing a commercial for Miller Lite where Burt Reynolds, Jerome Bettis, Jimmy Johnson, Triple-H, and a few other men sat around a table discussing "man laws." One of those man laws was that fruit was NOT to be mixed with beer. Fast forward a couple of years to today, and I see an add for Bud Light (I know it's not the same beer, but it's still a beer), and it is introducing Bud Light Lime. I'm sorry, but does this not go against the man law commercial? Do you agree or disagree with the invention, marketing, and selling of Bud Light Lime?
Just so everyone knows out there, the second question is a legitamate question, but it also serves as a joke, so don't take it too personally if I offend anyone, it's really not my purpose.

FYI: Lime is a fruit
I forgot to put this in the post, but according to Wikipedia, Lime is classified as a fruit

Tomlin is hard on them in order to prepare them for the upcoming season. I like that about him however at the same time we have seen an awful lot of injuries.
Although we have to remember this IS football and it is a very physical sport. Plus you can make the argument that we haven’t really suffered any major losses (Sepulveda’s torn ACL was crushing for our special teams he will be missed this year, but still let’s not forget he IS only a punter)
Look at the Redskins two talented Defensive Ends lost in consecutive days both out for the season. So we just have to weather the storm of injuries and pray no major injuries occur before the season starts.
As for the Bud Lite thing I agree that this whole Bud Lite with Lime goes against “Man Law”. It’s a shame that a beer company has sold out and gone against this sacred code. Haha

Tomlin
I like Tomlin but like every other 2nd year NFL player/coach he needs to make great strides between years 1 and 2. Is he too tough on the players? Was Noll? Was Lombardi? Parcells? It’s a fine line. It is football. A mans game. You got to be tough. You got to be conditioned and prepared. It’s Tomlin’s job to push the envelope. Is Tomlin’s camp too tough? Ask me again in December.
Regarding fruit and beer…puhleeeze! As a Pittsburgh boy I had my first Corona in Cali at 17 with a lime in in it. It was awesome! I love Jerome but…Bettis didn’t let me tell him when to take a shot in his groin or when to change hands with the ball near the goal line. I don’t let Bettis tell me what to put in my alcohol. Now as a PA transplant in Cali I won’t order a Corona without a lime. I used to drink the Rolling Rock from Latrobe but it was sold and they brew it in New England now. No more Rock for this Steelers fan!

same old deal
I think that this is nothing new. We always seem to pick up injuries in camp, and I’m sure other teams do as well. I don’t think Coach T is being to hard on them…I think playing football is much harder on you than practice. Although, with the rookies I’m sure there is a feeling that maybe they have to prove themselves (against a level of talent that they haven’t played against before) which can lead to overworking a small injury into something else, but then again – in games they have to play through pain too.
On the beer and lime thing. I don’t think any of those flavored beers should be sold as beer. They should be called something else entirely. Cherry beer? Lime beer? – The only exception I’ll make is a slice of lime on a bottle of Corona or something – that’s part of a different culture so there you go – the beer is still beer flavored. However, with Budweisser getting bought out by Belgians (they flavor the heck out a lot of beers over there) you might see more of this.

I mentioned some of this elsewhere
but I don’t think there are any more injuries than one can reasonably expect, nor do I think that the injuries we’ve sustained have to do with an unnecessarily punishing regimen.
Our injury situation isn’t really all that severe, either. Every practice there’s someone who’s tweaked a hamstring or pulled a muscle in their shoulder, and sits out a practice or two. That’s not a big deal – it’s the sort of stuff that they play through during the season.
At this point in the year, the only players who appear to have suffered bad injuries are Sepulveda and Kemo. It’s hard to blame camp for either of those, or for Polamalu arriving with a minor, pre-existing condition, or with big snack showing up more overweight than usual.

And I disagree
with the very existence of Bud Light, as I do with all American beer.

All American???
Wow, you’re cutting out some fantastic micro-brews with that statement. I agree that the major breweries are fairly garbage I would point you to some great stuff coming out of hundreds of micros… Mmmm….
As to the over-all question some beer does well with an accent of fruit. A lot of summer heffevezien is much better with lemon or orange slices in it.

ouch
would agree here, defintely. The big 3 are horrible, in many ways. Although one is technically Belgian now, right?

my take
Injuries happen, I don’t put those at Tomlin’s feet.
As for the beer, I don’t have any hard stance against the lime or lemon in a beer. From personal experience, I’ve got horrible acid reflux and adding a lemon to a beer greatly reduces the pain that I’ll be in the following day.

First, from everything that I’ve heard, this camp has been much less physical than the previous camp, so I don’t think that Tomlin is running the guys too hard.
Second, the beer question: It would seem hypocritical that the company that put out the “Man-Law” commercials then breaks one of the “Man-Laws”. But, then, someone pointed out that they were bought, so I guess it’s really a different company now. Bud-light Lime does seem sort of Wine-coolerish. But, I’d probably still try it anyway, just to see if it tastes good.
