Harrison, Farrior, Timmons, Woodley
Gives me shivers. I believe they've got a shot to be the best single foursome we've had as backers in a long long time. In recent (ish) history, I would counter with Kevin Greene, Greg Lloyd, Chad Brown and Levon Kirkland, who of course took us to a superbowl.
Can any of yins think of another set who would take the clear-cut cake?
Apparently I need about nine more words. Words words.

They've all got different, and complimentary, strengths
You have Harrison on the edge, spitting fire and largely looking like he came here specifically to eat your very soul.
Farrior, in the Buck. Running the show, calling the plays, setting the audibles. Making the tackles.
Timmons, the untested young warrior. Able to leap tall tight ends in a single bound, and can go side to side in less time than it takes Tom Brady to take his panties off.
And Lamar Woodley. I loves me some Lamar Woodley. I think he and Harrison have a decent shot at 2 dozen sacks between them. He’s quick, powerful, and hits like a freight train.
When does the season start again? ;)
Guns don't kill people. Lamar Woodley kills people.

Greene, Lloyd, Brown, Kirkland
While I love the new line-up, was that old one awesome or what?

WOW
This looks scary. The best in the league me thinks.

Methinks the best linebacking corp in the league cannot be 50% composed by entirley unproven second year players.
by kwoog on Aug 22, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ravens, Cowboys, Chargers, Patriots just off the top of my head.
You’ve got two completely unproven guys projected as starters (I know Timmons isn’t yet, but he will be). Basically the best case senario for Timmons and Woodley this year is to be what Jackson and Wimbley were last year (our 1st/2nd round consecutively picked LBs from 06, one inside one out).
by kwoog on Aug 23, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Patriots? Bruschi is 35 and Seau is 38. Adalius Thomas is good, but I actually saw a Dolphins post on how his numbers were right on par with Joey Porter’s last year.
The other three, ok, I’ll give you them. But, if Timmons and Woodley are as good as they could be, I could definitely see them beating out those three.

sorry but
the Pats LBs were a weakness last year. Outside of Vrabel doing a great job in pass-rushing, they were weak in run and coverage. Chargers, Cowboys are up there, but again neither of those teams LBs do as good a job in coverage as ours do. Merriman is a way better pass rusher than anyone we have, but he can’t cover anybody. Part of the reason the Chargers were weak early in the year is that Merriman/Phillips were dropping into coverage alot, and getting smoked. They aren’t nearly as versatile as our guys. Ravens LBs are great, Cowboys are very good. Chargers are very good, Pats, NOPE.

That’s what I meant. Patriots LBs are definitely not better than Steelers (unless their rookie is awesome). The other three (meaning Chargers, Cowboys, and Ravens) may be better, but if the Timmons and Woodley meet or beat expectations, maybe not.

Seriously
Let’s see how they do this year before we put these 2 new youngsters in the same class as Brown, Greene, Kirkland and “Avoid” the Lloyd.
I personally hope they dominate, but comparisons at this point in time are moot.

When
did I compare these linebackers to the 90’s ones??? Brown, Greene, Kirkland, and Lloyd are hands down better. But, I think Farrior, Harrison, Timmons, and Woodley are the best in the league.

Lambert, Ham, Russell were better then Brown, Greene, Kirkland, and Lloyd. But both were some of the best units ever

It could be, but it’s obviously no sure thing. The point is that all are former or potential stars. There’s no filler like Foote or Haggans. With the Chargers having (more) drug suspensions and torn PCL’s, this group could be the best in the league. We’ll have to see what the young guys actually do, instead of what they could do.

Greene, Lloyd, Brown, Kirkland. They win, hands down. What a crazy set of linebackers that was.
I think in the 90’s, my favorite Greg Lloyd moment was before a Monday night game when he said he was going to know Marino into new week or some such. That guy was scary.

You want to talk about scary, look no further than Harrison and Woodley and Timmons.
We are linebacker central folks with a rich lineage for sure, and these three guys are no exception. They are going to be something awesome as they jell together with Farrior keeping everything together. Something we can all really enjoy watching unfold in the years to come, starting now!!!

I'm giddy.
just having Woodley and Harrison on the edge was enough to make me smile, but keeping Farrior and getting a new “Kendrell Bell” is just insane. Just think about how many Pro Bowls this corps will have, career-wise.

There's definitley potential here...
However, unfortunately, kwoog has a point. Until we see Woodley and Timmons in healthy, starting, action we can’t say we’re the best until they reach their full roles which should be this season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a major fan of Woodley (for god sake I’m wearing my Woodley jersey right now) and I’m really excited to see Timmons start. But they have to live up to the hype which I’m confident they will. If they play as well as we hope they will, then it is safe to say we have one of if not the best LB core in the NFL.

Woodley's stat from last year...
I think we’ve seen some of Woodley’s potential:
He played 14 games (including the playoffs) and had 6 sacks. I firmly believe that a healthy Woodley would be a great fit for the defense.

You're not lying either...
I’m ont normally a stat guy, but when I saw the sum total he achieved with very limited playing time I was ready to see some more….

Steelers LBs
The only group that I can think that were pretty clearly better were Lambert, Ham and Russell. But, different era, and different scheme, so it’s really hard to compare.

Hold on a minute...
Part of me wants to say let’s keep it down – bad juju, but I’m pretty damn excited about those guys too. I agree that we need to see how this combo works out for real this year and the next and so on before we put them in the great combo category. I sure do think they have that potential though.
Although if we continue to be like butter against the run these guys won’t get a chance to get to the QB as much as we’d like.

Best LB Corps
1) Ham, Lambert & Russell
2) Greene, Lloyd, Kirkland & Brown
Those 90’s Steelers got burned so bad by the Horse Face choker. Guys like Greene, Lloyd, John L Williams, Lake, Dawson etc so deserved a ring. Woodson won one, but should have got one in Pittsburgh. Gosh I hate O’Donnell. My least favorite Steeler of all time.
Agree with those above that state we need to wait to see Woodley and Timmons make a tackle before we annoit them “the best.”

The Choker!
Oh man…earlier this year there was a thread about “least favorite Steeler” and that was my first post on the site here – grrrrrrrrr I hate that guy too…. Irrational, yes, but its the way it is. So much hard work and potential wasted on the worst interceptions I can think of ever. I still wonder what the heck happened there.

Wait, am I understanding this correctly, do you guys think you should have beaten that Cowboys team?

I don't know about _should_ have
But we sure as hell would have if not for O’Donnell pitching to the other team.

Absolutely!
Speaking for myself of course. The Steelers were on the way back. IMHO they would have made it too. Stoudt made it a gimme. Not once, but twice.

My bad!
O’Donnell not Stoudt. Speaking of old Cliffy boy, I was at that Pittsburgh Mauler game when he was complimented with snow balls. I believe his appearance was the reason for the game selling out. TBS Stoudt must have had some ranking on the most hated list.

Don't Know
if they would have won that game but…all year the Steelers came from behind and would usually end the game with a 9 minute drive into the end zone for a TD. There was usually only seconds left when they scored. Against Dallas when they got the ball back down 20-17 with 6 minutes left all I could think was Bam Bam Bam. Instead we got choke choke choke.
Even if the Steelers don’t win that game those 90’s LB would have had a ring had Cowher chosen Bubby (not as athletic and talented but a will to win – see 89) over Horse Face. I really believe they would have. Remember, the Steelers were the number 1 seed in the AFC in 92 when Bubby won the last couple games for an injured O’Dufus. In the playoffs Cowher went back to 14 and he promptly pissed away home field and we lost to a 4 SB loser (Buf) at Pittsburgh. In 94 The Choker lost to SD at Pittsburgh. His fans point to the 349 yards he threw for that day but I say “he only put up 13 points in a home Championship game!” Even in 95 he almost lost to the Colts as the Steelers trailed 16-13 late in the 4th when Ernie “Money” Mills made a circus catch at the 3 yard line to send the Steelers (through Bam) to PHX to choke against the Cowboys.
Point is I believe this team (except the QB) should have won a SB between 92-97. That’s why they used to say Cowher couldn’t win the big game. Because 14 & 10 couldn’t.

Aikmen said himself...
that the Cowboys weren’t winning that game without that INT. I was just about two when this happened so I can’t remember but the pain is there…

I had just moved to Pittsburgh from NM
My Grandpa was a lifelong Cowboys fan, and I listened to the whole game on the family stereo. The instant that game was over, the phone rang, and guess who it was, calling to gloat… ’Course, I would have been calling had it been the other way around!

number 3
Woodley, Timmons, Farrior, and Harrison have the potential to be number 3. You just can’t beat the best of all-time Ham Lambert & Russell ( Robin Cole was pretty good too) and number two was pretty amazing. the current LBs the best in the league IMO.

jumping the gun a little bit
now, no doubt, we have talent in the lb corps. when larry foote is NOT projected to be a starter, then you know you have talent and depth. but let’s remember, harrison (even though he was a pro bowl starter) has started just one season. woodley and timmons have 0 career starts between the two of them. and while i love farrior and am stoked that he’s going to retire in the burgh, he is 33 years old. let’s hold off on the best in the league stuff…remember, baltimore has ray lewis, bart scott, and terrell suggs. the bears have urlacher and briggs (two all pro backers). the cowboys have ware, zack thomas, bradie james, and greg ellis…etc.
we have the potential to be the most dynamic lb corps in the league, but lets give them time to prove it. plus, as far as i know, tomlin hasn’t named timmons the started over foote, has he?

The consensus on our LB group might be a little optimistic...
but nothing wrong with that. I for one am wondering how long before an update of this
shirt appears.

Pro-Bowl joke
Personally, I think the Pro-Bowl voting is a complete joke. Should Willie and Ben have made it last year as they were voted to be? Yes. Should Troy have? No Sacks. No picks. No. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the guy, but that was NOT a “pro-bowl year.” In his defense he was hurt, and sometimes playing like it. Anyway, there are a lot of good middle linebackers in the league, but James Farrior should have been a legit choice, or candidate last year. 111 tackles, 6 sacks. I don’t know the passes defended or INT stats, sorry…
Speaking of great linebackers… Here’s a pint to hoping that whatever 5 or 6 (I bet you see Keyaron Fox sometimes… sometimes) Linebackers play the majority of time this season, that when they play the Pats mr. pretty boy is a good example of my name by the end of the game.
