Anthony Smith
Reading Lolley's blog again.......Anthony Smith (on his first day back from sitting out with a groin problem) leveled Hines Ward in a 7 on 7, non-contact drill. I'm convinced now that this kid, despite having pretty good natural instincts, just doesn't have much ability to be coached, he lacks the brain to be coached. That's why sometimes he'll make a big play off his instincts, but then when it requires discipline he will get burned. This relates to him not understanding to stop trying to injure our star WR's in TRAINING CAMP (in non-contact drills...that's the 3rd time this training camp alone). How many times with this kid, before we cut ties?

August 26, or August 30?
Cut him either way.

Smith
That’s pretty discouraging news but they don’t have the depth at safety to cut him. He’s dirt cheap and the primary backup. As aggravating as he is to watch, his roster spot is a lock unless some unheralded rookie surprises everyone.

Smith
I know I’m in the minority on this one… but I like the kid.
7 on 7 tackling? Dumb…he needs to save his aggression for live drills.
IMO, way too much was made of his Pats prediction…obviously all players/teams feel they can beat their opponent on any given Sunday…but you don’t want to give your opponent “bulletin board” material.
Yes, I know he got beat deep by Tom (50 TD’s) Brady…but i’ll add, as I have on earlier posts, he just missed, by an inch, of tipping that ball away…then we’d be saying what a great play Smith made…
I’m not defending all his actions…my point is patience…it’s not easy to be patient I know (all the dads out there know what I mean) but cutting him would be a foolish, knee-jerk reaction.
I believe he is going to be good for us…real good…

He's a bad safety.
I don’t care about his prediction. I care that he sucks, and that he’s reckless.

He's a bad free safety
He would be a terror at Strong safety, but we just happen to have the best one of those in the NFL in Troy, therefore Smith is kinda useless unless Troy goes down and Clark is healthy. At any rate I’m not writing off Smith yet.
"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"
at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

The almost recovery was the second time
I’ll give him a pass on the trick play. If he jumps the run against the Pats (who never run) when he’s a cover-2 safety and lets Randy freakin Moss go free for the TD – that’s the truly unacceptable mistake.
And I can’t find words to describe how terrible of an idea it is to level Hines Ward in a non-contact drill.

None of us are talking about what he did or how he played last year. We’re solely focused on what he’s done in camp, which is continue to be an aggressive, explosive but completely wreckless player. Playing ‘balls out’ is good and all but continually blowing up wide receivers in an ‘non-contact’ drill is useless and shows his complete lack of football IQ.

Smith
Reckless?...yes, I agree, at times …so aren’t a lot of players in the NFL.
Sucks? Bad? Players who suck in the NFL get cut, and get cut quickly…
Again, he does have alot to learn and he’s made dumb mistakes…he’s been in the league all of 2 years!
You guys may be ready to dump him…but I’m not…I still like him and I think he contributes alot this year.

Hines can take it
He’s the man.
Maybe Hines will get an opportunity to block the SOB soon. Let’s see that creep cry, Hines.
Nonetheless, Smith is worth keeping on the team . . . for now. He’s a valuable SS back-up who can contribute on special teams for a couple years. We can hope Smith will eventually wise up. If not . . . boot to the head!
I don’t start him this year, though, unless Clark is out. That’s my knee-jerk reaction. Bench him now. No preseason starts, either. How’s Mundy doing? I haven’t heard about him in a while.

i dont think
its a question of if Hines can take it. What if next time, he levels Limas and breaks a bone? Or hits Holmes and tears an ACL? Intensity is great, but his actions tend to gravitate towards idiocy. I don’t want to see him cut right away necessarily, but if keeps pulling this kind of crap, like golden says, he doesn’t seem to have smarts when it comes to football.

I'd watch out if I was Smith
You know Hines probably has something in mind for the young man.
Besides being uncontrollable, how did Smith do in his job in the practice? Any long balls over his head, or did it look like he was in the right posistion and tracking with receivers well?
Just wondering.
I reckon I agree with the sentiment that he’ll probably be with the team due to depth.

Fickle
Funny how last year all the talk was getting this guy in the game and now all the talk is cut him loose. Geesh…give the kid a chance. The kid’s got game, still needs discipline, but so did I when I was 23. I think Smith style is not a good match for Troy. Troy plays wreckless, so the FS needs to cover his back, which Ryan Clark is good at doing based on his experience with Sean Taylor.

Ehhh
I think everyone is being pretty hard on Smith – yes somewhat of a jackass… But just imagine if in week 2 he lights up Braylon Edwards and then Kellen Winslow. I’m sure no one would mind that – sometimes you have to be a little crazy.. Remember guys like Lambert and Greene? I’m not against some mean, nasty, SOB knocking some dudes around.. They are football players.

very true
But what if he’d have give Hines a concussion yesterday and he missed the first month of the season? Then would you still be saying ‘no big deal?’ It was a non-contact drill for a reason. There’s a reason that a coached yelled out “Are you out of your God damn mind?" afterwards. He’s a dynamic player and it’s all fun and games when he lays out guys like Willie Reid but at some point we have to notice a pattern of ignorance or flat out disrespect.

Smith has potential. I really liked his special teams play and his nickel/dime coverage skills in his rookie year. He proved he could hit. Last year was abysmal. Vin above is right. We were all prognosticating Smith would start. He did start a couple games. He was horrible. He didn’t just get beat by Tom (50 TD) Brady. He got humiliated by Brady. A couple times. Smith never recovered from the NE debacle and was horrid the rest of the year getting beat like one of Michael Vick’s dogs on a regular basis.
I agree with someone above who said the Steelers don’t have the depth at S to just cut Smith after he hammered Hines and played putrid in 07. I am hoping Troy and Clark stay healthy and Smith plays good on ST. If we use him on nickel and dime I hope he does his job and hits some opponents like they were Hines or Reid. His Steelers career is not over yet but he needs to do some good things in 08 if he wants to stay a Steeler.

It is his contract year this year
Let’s not forget.
So if he continues the shenanigans, or has a terrible year, he is not going to be resigned.

Or we can just put stipulations into his contract that deduct hundreds of thousands of dollars for every hit in non-contact drills. In fact, I like that.

Smith
It’s clear we are divided on this one…
some have had it with him and want him out…
others, like me, think he shows promise and will contribute
only time will tell…3rd year is pivotal for him

comeback
does anyone remember like i do the monday night game against indy in 2005?the one where ike taylor got burned on the first play.surely he learned his lesson and continued on to have his best season as a pro.maybe the same will come of Smith.
making mistakes is part of the learning proccess.now if this season Smith is running his mouth to NE,or if he blows a coverage then by all means lets crucify him for it,but until then we should all have his back.how many of us were ready to throw Ben under the bus after leading the league in INTs?very few right.
as far as the hit on Hines,he has taken plenty of licks,he will be fine.what’s wrong with showing a lot of intensity during practice?they are football players after all….they should be hitting each other.

Here's the deal....
NON-CONTACT DRILL!
Taking someone out in a non-contact drill is like taking a humvee into a bumper car ride. No one in the “Non-contact” drill is playing with the intensity and preparation for getting hit…and that does make a big difference as to how you and your body react – in fact its one of the basics in some martial arts – that you prepare your body before getting hit. Non contact is about running routes, about being in position, about being able to be there to make the play. If Smith taps Hines on the shoulder or grabs him in that situation then no big deal. To loose the plot and deck someone when they’re walking through a drill is lame.
I think everyone will agree that in the context of a game, against the opposing team, taking out a receiver is a good thing-part of the game, but the lack of clarity of purpose and focus that this shows is disturbing. Even in a game context this inability to adjust to a second mental process is going to be bad for the team (See the clips of Smith last year vs Pats). If he can’t have more than one thought in his head – i.e. smack the receiver/runner, then he is going to be caught out on play action and the like time and again.
I don’t think we should “throw him under the bus”, but I do wonder about his prospects.

Prospects
A couple things:
1. He is still young and obviously not ready to be a full time starter. However he has shown potential, so I think you keep a guy like that around as a backup for at least a while longer, unless someone offers him starter money, then you let him walk.
2. He may be enough of a talent that a good coach will know how to use his talent while still recognizing his limitations.
But, either way, if he can’t learn better than he’s shown, he’ll never be more than a backup, because he’ll always be the guy getting beat on the play action fake.

agreed
i guess it comes off as me saying we should cut him, but i didn’t really mean that, just more at looking at his future prospects, if he really doesn’t step up this year i can’t see us holding onto him, although for a backup he is a very good backup.

Taking his que from Tomlin
Wasn’t it Tomlin that told the whole team to “Thrive and not just survive” camp? Sounds like the head coach wants to see more intensity and not just players going through the motions…in my eyes, that hit, although wreckless, is what the head coach wants to see.
