Farve to Jets

So the Brett Favre saga moves to Broadway.  I'm just curious how most of you guys feel about this situation.  I seem to remember a post about this early on, but I just wondered how you guys think this will affect the AFC and especially the East.   Think Team Favre can take down the hated Pats?    I hope that they can topple them, but I am a little doubtful, I guess just because of the fact that they, barring a few recent seasons, have such a hard time making the playoffs.

The Jets

can probably now challenge Buffalo for 2nd place in the division. I don’t see them anywhere near being able to take on the Pats. But their offense now has a down the field aspect that it didn’t yesterday. I guess the question I have is, can Cotchery and Coles get deep enough to take advantage of Favres arm? When Pennington was throwing the ball they didn’t need to but now they do.

Finally

The best thing about this whole thing coming to an end is that we won’t be bombarded with Brett Favre updates on ESPN anymore. I can’t even explain how aggravating it has been to get up each morning to see some baseball highlights only to be force-fed 30 minutes of “here’s the latest on Favre.” Anyways enough ranting.

I was surprised the compensation was as low as it ended up being though:

According to the NFL Network, if Favre takes 50 percent of total snaps with the Jets in 2008, the fourth-rounder becomes a third-round pick. If he gets 70 percent of the snaps and the Jets make the playoffs, it becomes a second-round pick; and if he gets 80 percent of snaps and the Jets make the Super Bowl, it becomes a first-round pick.
For that price, I’m surprised that the Ravens and a couple of other teams weren’t involved.

Interesting

It is interesting that there’s a good chance that his compensation will be lower than Jason Taylor who also seems to be near an end to his career. Plus Favre’s at the most important position. I wonder what the Vikes would have given up, given a chance.

I’m glad it’s done. It will be weird to see Favre elsewhere, but doubt the Jets can make the playoffs in such a competitive AFC. I wouldn’t be surprised to see three AFC South teams again. Whether the Titans or Houston, one could make it.

Hooray!!

No more soap opera!! All sports fans should be celebrating the end of this terrible media circus. I remember on the trade deadline day for MLB, there were huge deals and talks of other huge deals that almost went down, probably constituting the most exciting day to be a Pirates fan in 15 years, and stupid ESPN was still running speculative stories about what Favre was eating, what kind of underwear he had on, the contents of his text messages, which stocks he thought would go up soon, etc.

It is actually interesting to think of what the Jets will do this year, though. They brought in such a ridiculous number of FA’s and trades that they have a very talented and volatile group there now. They may have just passed the Eagles for the largest possible wins differential.

As for compensation, I’m sure he’ll meet the playing time quotas, but it will all be up to how far they go. Obviously, there’s no reason to think they’re going to the SB, but they have a schedule that’s about as easy as the one they had in 2006, and they’re probably a better team now if they don’t blow up, so they have a very solid shot at the playoffs. A second rounder is a steep price to pay in the long term for a rental QB, but it’s been pretty obvious this off-season that they’re not thinking long term.

so, im curios...

you found the trade deadline an exciting day? So you like all those moves they did?

Pirates

Bucsdugout, the Pirates’ SBN site has a lot of good info on the trades. In short, the old (Littlefield) management was so bad at trading and drafting that the minor league was completely devoid of talent. In the majors, they had a good lineup, terrible pitching, no depth, and no shot at doing anything close to competing. They could have held onto all their older players with expiring contracts in an effort to make it above .500, but in 2010, they would essentially have had nothing: no minor leaguers, a bunch of holes in the lineup and rotation, and no hope. Instead, they traded away their top 2 hitters who were having outstanding years (aka sold high) and got back enough prospects to rejuivinate their minor leagues (aka the Pirates in 2 years). They still held onto all their promising younger players (McLouth, Doumit), they didn’t dump players who were having a down year (Sanchez, most of the pitchers) and most of the prospects they got in return are going to play in the majors in the near future. Heck, one of those guys, Jeff Karstens, pitched 7 2/3 innings of a perfect game last night, finishing with a 2 hit shutout. And these were supposed to be long-term trades.

It sucks to lose Bay, but this is the life of small market teams that want to remain (or become) competitive. The Rays, Marlins, Indians, Twins and A’s have been making moves like this for a long time. You sell high, avoid spending your finite resources on guys like CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez, and you keep reloading with cheap young talent (from trades, good drafting, and good player development). It’s the only way small market teams can compete with teams from Boston, New York and Chicago. It’s looking like Pittsburgh has turned a corner and is making some shrewd moves toward making the team actually competitive, instead of making a team that has a shot at .500. We’ll see how they do with player development, but I like what I’ve seen from the new management so far.

So yes, I liked the moves.

by BadMaafala on Aug 7, 2008 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nice commentary

I liked the move with Nady. It was sad to see him go, and he’s been great. It just hurts to lose Bay, like you said. I love that he has been doing fantastic in Boston. And hopefully Karstens won’t turn out like every other Pirates pitcher seems to: flashy first season, crappy afterwards. Duke, Snell, and Gorzo in short memory have all had fantastic rookie years only to go backwards the next. Gorzo has looked horrible this year. Pitching was definitely horrid, and good riddance to JVB and Herrera.

I guess that where I struggle, is that this is the same type of move that we make year after year, aside from the Matt Morris debacle. Its hard to trust that the new management will be different from the old. I know this is new management, so I really do hope that this isn’t business as usual. 16 years of frustration has left me very cynical. I still keep tuning in for games, I still keep hoping, but I can’t help but feel like this is the same old salary dumping Bucs who in 2 years, all we will hear is how McLouth and Doumit are being shopped around in 2010 at the trade deadline.

by steelerark on Aug 7, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

understandable points

I’m certainly not as knowledgeable as a couple of the baseball geeks (in the best sense of the word) at bucsdugout, but most of them seemed to think it was of a significantly different nature than the past management. On the surface, it does resemble the old moves, but it also resembles the moves made by those successful teams I mentioned. The management, whether it’s good or bad, had to do something. I think a good sign is that they traded Nady while he was having a career year and Bay now instead of after his lousy season last year. They didn’t trade Snell or Gorzo or Sanchez for dirt cheap because there’s a pretty good chance they’ll rebound next year and have a higher value, whether that’s to the Bucs because they’re competitive or in another trade because a team offers a lot for them. It’s hard to give a good judgement of the new management without going forward in time, but I definitely don’t think they were terrible moves or merely salary dumps. The extra cash will also help them keep the new stars, McLouth and Doumit, around through the primes of their careers, instead of letting them walk to keep an older guy like Bay. It’s like giving money to FWP and Troy instead of Faneca and Porter.

I super-duper-ultra-agree.

I’m so freaking sick of hearing about Favre. So. Freaking. Sick. Of. It. I’m glad he’s somewhere and this is done with; I’m especially glad he’s nowhere I care about.

However, I don’t think he’ll ultimately make a difference for the Jets. There’s no reason to think the Patriots won’t win the division this year and it’s pretty safe to assume that either Jax/Indy will snag the top Wild Card spot. This really means, in the best case, that the Jets are theoretically competing with a bunch of other teams for that last spot. So yes, it’s possible that this deal could potentially help in theory, but I don’t consider it likely; really, the best result of this is the fact that Jets fans can actually watch a good quarterback who isn’t playing for the other team.

Good move...

It fits. Favre brings alot to the Jets IMO. I love it because I’m sure the move has made the Pats and their fans a little nervous. I also love it because the controversy is at an end. Go Bret!

by steelersrock08 on Aug 7, 2008 12:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yah, found it

It seems that Packer nation is split in their feelings about this issue.

by steelerark on Aug 7, 2008 12:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My sentiments exactly!!!!!!!

If the Pats can loose to Bret, the Jets, and Faneca or to the Tuna driven Dolphins, or to the 1/2 Canuck Bills… it’s all good.

My buddy, who is a Jet’s fan, has the following to say: ”...WOO HOO!!!!!!!! Could it be? The Jets get to .500? I get to actually see a game on TV? I feel like I’m in a Disney Animated Musical Dream Sequence!”

That’s probably not a bad goal – that they’d get more air-time.

It’s wierd to think that Faneca’s blocking for Favre now though. Unfortunately, for you guys tired of the soap opera, I’d settle in for a season of interest on this topic. The media guys just had Christmas early, and they’ll be cutting this turkey up all year long.

by SCSteeler on Aug 7, 2008 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yah, this is far from over

Every time Rodgers fails, its gonna bring down the heat. Every time Brett has a good game, its gonna bring downt the circus. I’m curious though, why do so many people say that the Jets have no chance of being good this year? Two years ago, they were 10-6 and in the playoffs, with Chad Pennington. Two years ago, the Packers were 8-8, after going 4-12 the year before. The NFL is tremendously unpredictable, so its impossible to say that anything is assured. Now, the Jets have a guy who has not missed a start in 17 seasons. A guy who holds all the major qb records and still has a ton in the tank. Sorry, but I’m not ready to write off the Jets yet. Not saying they’re definitely in the superbowl, but I wouldn’t bet against a playoff berth.

by steelerark on Aug 7, 2008 2:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Problem Is...

The Jets really do not have a young quarterback right now who can assume the role of apprentice to take over when Brett finally does ride off into the sunset. Chad Pennington is a walking band-aid, Kellen Clemens does not appear to have the physical attributes necessary to play professionally, and while they drafted Erik Ainge only this year, he does not seem to be consistent enough to be a long-term answer.

Therefore, I see Favre playing this season and next. This gives the Jets a year to draft someone (Tebow?) who can sit behind Brett and learn.

Favre

I too am absolutely tired of the Favre soap opera…and its not just this year, its gone on for the past couple years…will he? won’t he? who gives a bleeping, bleep!!

But I agree 100% with steelerark…it ain’t over folks…not by a long shot..

I think he will help them but I’m not sure how much…remember he is not familiar with any of the NY coaches (unlike TB, or Vikes), and he is unfamiliar with their offense…its interesting to note all the extra time of learning and film study he’s going to have to do…

will his heart be in it? will this light his fire as a new challenge? how will Ny fans treat him when he throws 3 picks in a game? Brady v Favre twice a year…

Oh, I can’t wait to see how it all turns out!! It’s like the Luke and Laura on-going plot from General Hospital (not that I ever watched that though!)

I just can’t for my next Favre scroll…

and remember

last time he switched to a new offense (under Mike McCarthy in GB) it took him two terrible seasons before he played well in it..

My thoughts

First, since he was so emphatic about retiring, he should have stayed retired. But, once he said he was coming back, I can’t believe that the Packers said they didn’t want him back. They could have diffused the situation immediately by bringing back as the starter, but they created a situation that caused it to drag on. If they just brought him back, then people would have said, “Oh, there’s Brett, being indecisive again.” But, he wouldn’t be the first player to retire and then come back. And, he won’t be the last.

Maybe it wouldn’t have been fair to Aaron Rodgers, but you don’t know what you have in Aaron Rodgers yet. This team is right in the mix to win a SB, this year, with Brett Favre. I don’t see that with Rodgers. Now, every time Rodgers struggles, fans will lambast him and the team for letting Favre go; even those fans who are saying to move on right now will turn on Rodgers.

As far as Favre with the Jets: That just tells me that he wants to play football even more than he cares about winning a SB. The Jets aren’t a really good team, and he’ll have to learn a new system. I think it may be that he just doesn’t know what else to do after he retires.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 7, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They say that folks that lose a limb feel a ghost arm or leg there anyway. I suppose for Favre, that limb is playing football. It’s been his life, and it’s getting close to fall, and he’s getting that itch….

To quote a song from another Steelers fan out there – “Sometimes I feel like Joe Montana….Just one more go in one more game.”

Can’t blame the guy for wanting to play.

by SCSteeler on Aug 7, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, and even though he’s been on another team, I’ve always liked him. Hopefully, for him, he will find something else to devote his energy to once he finally does retire for good. You always hate to hear those stories of the guys who never found anything else to do after football.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 7, 2008 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i totally understand

wanting to move forward. I do. Rodgers was in the OTAs, minicamps, yada yada. But I just don’t see how it is that you say on one hand, we are moving forward and Rodgers is the new QB. Then on the other hand, you wont release him because you know he will sign with the Vikes. If you are so sure that Rodgers is your man, let Brett go wherever he wants and play him if you have to. Sack up and take it. But they didn’t do that because they know that if they did, they would lose, twice. Brett is the better qb, period. I have no problems with the overall decision to move forward. I have a problem with them trying to dictate where he goes. I have read some folks say that he is a whiner, a flip flopper, blah blah.

Bottom line is this: the 16 years before Favre? 1 playoff appearance, 41% games won. They were LOUSY. The 16 years with Favre? 11 playoff apps, 2 NFC championships, 1 SB, 64% games won, records for passing TDs-YDs-ATTs-Comps-Wins, 3 time MVP, 9 pro bowls, 2nd in Playoff TDs-YDs-ATTs-Comps, not to mention a measly 253 consecutive games started which is tops among QBs and 3rd all time. Sorry, but that gives him the right to waffle on retirement a little bit.

by steelerark on Aug 7, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Moving forward

Sure, I do too. But, as you say, there is little doubt that this year, Brett is better than Aaron. And, when you have a team that is poised to win, you give yourself the best chance to win, this year. That what I don’t understand about the Packers approach. With Favre, this team is a legitimate SB contender, with perhaps the best young defense in the league. With Rodgers, you may be looking at playoff team, but do you really expect a first year starter to win a SB?

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 7, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

im totally with ya

I wholeheartedly agree that it was an idiot decision. I meant that I can understand where the thinking would come from, but I think they are idiots to let him go. No offense to Rodgers, but I hope they fail miserably. To sit there and watch Packer brass talk about ‘preserving Brett’s legacy’ made me want to puke.

by steelerark on Aug 9, 2008 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I don’t necessarily hope Rodgers fails or the Packers fail, but I do think the Packers’ FO are idiots. I guess I’m taking Favre’s side because I like him, and the people I hear most around here (I mean in Atlanta, not on BTSC) seem to side with the Packers (oh, we’re tired of hearing if Favre’s staying or going, just retire already!, that sort of thing).

Anyway, we obviously agree. :)

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 11, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps its a roster/signing thing?

Does anyone know how long Rodgers was signed for? If he’s nearing the end of his rookie contract they may be in a situation where they need to (pardon me) sh*$ or get off the pot. If they have to re-sign an unproven and not much tested QB at near premium rates, then maybe they’re looking at testing Rodgers out before his contract is up. If he stinks – high draft pick, if he floats ok- maybe a keeper, but they probably draft QB anyway.

by SCSteeler on Aug 7, 2008 6:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rodgers contract

Yes, from what I understand this is his final year on this contract. But, so what? They would have kept Brett if he hadn’t retired in the first place. They did also draft Brian Brohm and some other late round QB this year.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 8, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So they're looking at changing the QB scene anyway

...then it doesn’t make any sense to not keep him in the fold – totally agree. As it stands now we’re probably looking at a Joe Montana/Jerry Rice type thing….sad to see, but hopefully he won’t end his career being benched. Why did the franchise want to move on when they almost made it to the SB last year? Yep-you’re right, kinda dumb.
