the eagles were blitzing. wasn’t ben supposed to hold onto the ball until inside pressure forced him into the edge rushers and he was sacked?

Good to see Timmons involved in some coverage. Tyrone Carter too. He needs to play big this preseason to keep his job, even if hes paid a pittance really.

drive recap
the pass rush seems much improved, with woodley noticeable off the edge.
d-line seemed to get pushed off the line a bit much. chris hoke’s quick first step isn’t worth much if it is away from the play.
Timmons is one quick dude. Heck with the coverage – did you see him cover ground in a flash to shut down a wide open pass in the flat?
secondary didn’t seem terribly strong, but they only gave up short passes (bend but don’t break).

I unfortunately, have to be down on the beach for dinner. Poor me, I know. But actually, I’m already 30 minutes late (LOL) because I wanted to see the opening two sequences.
So, I, as well as others, will find any insight useful, though I should be able to watch the tape later.

to close it out, we choked on third down, and then let desean foster pick up a long reception, but ryan mundy was right there in both cases. (to be fair, i couldn’t tell, but he might have let foster get open with poor coverage).
first play of the drive, Timmons flies toward the ball and stops the runner dead. I’m excited.
Ben is out, and some second teamers are in on D.

keyaron fox – who i have heard nothing about this offseason – was always around the ball on that drive. he just looks solid – not flashy, just there (and in a good way). and on the ernster punt he was right there.
did you see ryan mcbean run from the line of scrimmage into the secondary to tackle a guy who got away from william gay? if he can get consistent he could be a player.
offense:
mendenhall has got some moves, doesn’t mind smacking people in the face, and has speed for a big dude. but he’s not all there yet. he’ll dodge when he should hit someone, hit someone when he should turn on the burners, etc. but he has all the skills and these are his first nfl carries.
it only takes a few hard, power runs for me to better understand why the coaching staff likes davis and why we all love Russell.

Eddie Drummond
Listening to the radio broadcast since I’m out in California and the game is not on TV… Anyhow, Tunch Ilkin made the observation Eddie Drummond was down on two knees crutching his groin after the most recent punt. Sounds kinda serious.

3rd quarter
keyaron fox – i said he’s always around the ball, and he has been.
paxson – i heard his name mentioned. i’m piss poor at evaluating the lines (sad, i know, since that’s basically what’s important). anyone else?
Limas Sweed – when you’re a big WR, we’re gonna ask a coupla things from you. Be willing to go up and catch the ball. Hold on to it when you take a hit. Run solid routes to get open, even if you’re not the fastest guy on the field. Sweed did the first two in one play tonight and the rest will come with time.
Roy Lewis was around the ball quite a bit, but needs to work on his tackling.
Bryan MacFadden laid a great hit on Desean Jackson. A very Lambert-like pick-him-up-and-throw-him-to-the-ground. No wonder last season he was called the strongest pound-for-pound player on the team.
Hills – don’t push the guy outside on 5-7 step drops, unless it’s real far outside. He couldn’t slide out enough to stop a 3rd string eagle DE and it forced dixon to scramble. Dixon made a good play, but Dekker can’t catch.

the man does not like going down, and i love him for it. Once, he was strung wide and hit in the backfield, but still picked up yards. Later, he caught the ball on a check down from Dixon (and a nice choice by him to do so) and almost broke a tackle.

some more thoughts
and i may summarize in a diary, though i have to work this weekend. besides – who wouldn’t rather wait for wexell and lolley to tell u what they think?
Dixon had a rocky start, with a few poorly thrown balls and some hesitancy in the pocket. But he picked up his game, and looked pretty good against the 3rd team Eagles defense.
Limas Sweed, for all i’ve heard about him dropping balls in practice, caught them when they count.
I really don’t see Jeremy Bloom making this team. He doesn’t seem like a Steelers player at heart.
Travis William was what he was cracked up to be: around the ball in the passing game, but absent in run defense. But he screwed up when he could have simply knocked the ball down and instead got called for pass interference in the fourth quarter.
Bruce Davis is fast and has a quick first step to get to the edge. He doesn’t have the strength, though, to follow up on by pushing through to the quarterback without getting shoved outside. And on at least running play, he didn’t move the 3rd string left tackle one inch and couldn’t get off his block. His best play was getting around the right side to clip a ball as it left Feeley’s hand – against the dregs of the Philly line.
To get a good sense of the lines, you need to be better at this than I am or watch the game more them once.
Is it me, or is Jordan Reffet having a good game? I’ve noticed him behind the line of scrimmage a couple of times, admittedly against 3-4 string teams.
Jonathan Dekker stood out, in a bad way. If you want to be the 3rd tight end, you need to block, block, block, while showing enough hands to make a few plays. The only time I heard his name called was when a Dixon escape-pass bounced off his hands and when he was called for a penalty.
Mike Humpal made a few good plays. I saw him in the action on 2nd/3rd teams and once on ST. I think he has more to show us.
William Gay didn’t show up the way he did last preseason.
by syrsteelerfan on Aug 8, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Who the hell is vincent? Eh, I wouldn’t mind seeing him against a better defense, and if he’s okay I hope he is down with our practice squad.
by steelguy99 on Aug 8, 2008 10:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I more or less agree with everyting you’ve put up there systeeler. A couple of thoughts:
Mendenhall (Rush-hard Wreckingball? Nah…) looked good, getting 7 carries for 34 yards (and a 15 yard dash in there). Given that this is his first NFL experience I think it’s admirable. This guy is going to be good.
Fox was always by the ball with 3 tackles (and perhaps more assists). This guy looks like a perfectly good backup/special teams guy – which is what he was advertised as.
Mundy hits hard, is always around the ball, but thinks too much while in coverage. Still, this kid has an upside I think. We ought to keep him.
Timmons, as I said above, shows great skills. He and Farrior could be quite a team. Also, Farrior needs a new deal.
McBean showed some good mobility and could probably be an asset in short range coverage. Given our obsession with the zone blitz this could be a good reason for keeping him around.
Sweed is going to be great.
by BluegrassSteeler on Aug 8, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Also, Mendenhall looks totally solid on kick return and Eddie Drummond flashed his old self there a couple of times on that punt return.
And our kick coverage was surprisingly good. Who are these people and what have they done to my Steelers.

last comment
I’m watching NFL network and their Mendenhall comments are killing me.
They keep showing Rashard’s first run, where he shrugged off a tackle but was stood up straight by it, and then hit hard while standing straight up. Their comment? Either “lower your pads” (maybe true) or “welcome to the NFL, rook.”
They fail to mention that the guy in Black and Gold bounced up after the play, while the tackler lay on the ground in pain. Hell yea.

Even though I didn’t get to see the game, or follow it due to time difference, you guys gave me a chance to get the feeling for the action.
A few questions though: How did Batch get hurt exactly? In terms of judging the line play, did the QBs have to scramble alot, sacks?
That’s about it, but thanks again!
by SCSteeler on Aug 9, 2008 4:14 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
SCSteeler
Batch got hurt on a busted play.
Batch turns to hand the ball off to the RB,I believe it was Mewelde Moore in at the time, the RB goes right Batch looks to hand it to the left side. Batch looks surprised to turn and see the empty backfield so he rollsout to the left side and runs off tackle while slipping through a surprisingly big hole gaining about 6-8 yards. Unfortunately he met a charging LB and Batch decided to dip his shoulder and take the blow instead of sliding/diving. Batch absorbs the hit and goes down into the ground and his right houlder takes the blow of the force upon impact. He gets up and you think nothing of it (at least I didn’t see anything,I was too busy being impressed by his improvision). I believe he even ran the next play, then sure enough the trainers come onto the field and Batch is on his knees. It looks like they are looking at his neck, then he lifts his right arm quickly to show that he can move it and we all think he is ok. However when he gets up he doesn’t return to the huddle, he instead runs off the field to the locker room. After the game he is diagnosed with a broken collar bone, out 4-6 weeks.
As for the O-Line, I thought they looked actually decent tonight. First team O-line protected Ben well on his one pocket pass. (Ben’s second throw was simply a “screen” if you will, seeing as how Santonio just turned in to find the ball and Ben hit him instantly) I didn’t notice Batch scrambling while he was with the first O-Line. Second string O-line looked above-average. As you may have heard, Tony Hills got beat often off the edge tonight, however he didn’t give up when being beaten. he constantly had a hand on the guy he was blocking it seemed, it’s just that he can’t let the guy get around him like that all the time because eventually he will get to the QB. Dixon was one of the two QB’s who played with only the 2nd string line, he had to scramble to save the play from being a sack 2-3 times so it wasn’t all that bad.
If your worried about us losing Charlie Batch I wouldn’t lose all hope yet, his injury wont have him missing much of the season. Although, I believe we have something in Dixon. He has a strong enough arm to make the throws, and more than enough athleticism to make up for bad O-Line play, very similar to Ben Roethlisberger’s styler when he first started out. He’ll never be as good as Ben, that’s not what I’m saying, but if Ben goes down for one or two games all hope is not lost for the Steelers. Our run game thrived today. It seemed like running off tackle was very productive while between tackles was very subpar IMO.
by iBleedBlack&Gold on Aug 9, 2008 4:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for that!
I seem to remember in 2005 or in 2006 that Charlie started for an injured Ben and got messed up on a run attempt near the goaline. Dude needs to slide. Hope he gets better soon, but at least Dixon looked ok during the game. I saw one clip of a pass to Sweed on the run – you’re right – very Ben like there, which would be good from the perspective that the receivers will be well used to Ben rolling out or passing on the run. Heard Tomlin’s conference saying they’ll immediately be looking to get a veteran backup in there – I suppose Mike Potts can start packing now?
Good news from the line front. This is the medicine that my obsession with the line play needs. Keep it coming guys…. Still just running over the game stats on Steelers.com and you seem to have picked right up on the small yardage between the tackles. It will be interesting to see how that goes next week with Hartwig in there. Still if we’re good on the edge running and have a good passing game that tandem can cause a lot of problems for opponents. If they seal the edges against the run, that should open up the field for the pass and vice versa…hopefully it will make opponents choose their own poison if you know what I mean.
by SCSteeler on Aug 9, 2008 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No problem.
And to further expand on what you are saying, yes Mike Potts is gone. Say hello to practice squad Potts. I expect us to sign Byron Leftwich. Think about the fit: Jaguars are very similar to the Steelers style of play. Leftwich can make the throws necessary and besides if Ben were to go down we would rely on the run heavily. This would allow Leftwich to simply “manage” the game instead of having to go out and throw for 300 yards like Ben is capable of.
It would make alot of sense that’s all I’m saying.
Couldn’t agree more as to what you said about the O-Line.
Here’s to hoping Hartwig is an upgrade at C. crossesfingers
by iBleedBlack&Gold on Aug 9, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Leftwich?...and other backup ponderings...
I’ve seen the reports about him flying in…and the possibility that they’re looking at Culpepper too. As I see it the choice between these two is kind of drastic. Both are damaged goods that once were the stalwarts of their teams. Your position on Leftwich is probably about right – he would be a game manager and we would run alot…a hell of alot. Culpepper might still alow us to keep the deeper passing game that we have the personel for now, and we could still run a heck of alot. Both are injury worries in themselves though.
It would be a strange dynamic in my opinion when Charlie comes back from injury. What would they do with either of these former starters then?
Also, would Dixon definitely be the 3rd string even if they bring in a vet? I wonder.
by SCSteeler on Aug 9, 2008 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
your right.
That is something that is overlooked. We only need a temporary backup. I also think Culpepper would want alot of money, at least too much for the role he would play with us.
Your right though, both are damaged goods. But maybe they are not only short term solutions as backup QB, but the long term as well. Maybe we sign one of them to a 2-3 year deal. Who knows? Or what if Dixon shines the rest of preseason and we don’t sign anyone? Again, who knows?..
Only time will tell.

The look of things
First off, Mendenhall looks like the real deal and the offensive weapons look deep. Even Dixon looked decent for his first time out. I agree with the others, in that I’d rather see Dixon at #2 while Batch is healing. I don’t want Leftwich or Culpepper near Latrobe, let alone on the team. Trust that Kemoeatu will do well. He’s got the tools and attitude. Faneca got paid, but he went to one of the worst front offices in the league. Remember how the Jets treated Pete Kendall?
Farrior needs a new contract even with Timmons and Woodley coming on. Keep Mundy, cut Smith if he cannot mature. After the Philly game, it’s obvious the D-line needs Hampton, “big” time. Cut Bloom and Drummond. Fox and Davis looked decent as well. Ernster also looked ok, especially on the kickoff.
