Leftwich on his way

Hey all, PPG reports that the team is flying in Brian Leftwich formerly of Jacksonville and Atlanta for a physical. Not sure how I feel about this.

What other QBs would your rather see? Daunte Culpepper? Maybe Tommy Maddox tries another go? Let's talk Air Mcnair out of retirement, God knows that he's generally had success in Pittsburgh, just not so much in that Monday night game last year.

Initial reports put Batch back with the team around weeks 3-4. Is this the end for Potts?

Your thoughts?

fa quarterbacks...

too bad for leftwich that cheeseburgers eaten doesn’t count towards one’s passer rating.

ha.

other available passers include a pair of tims (rattay and hasselbeck), craig nall, jamie martin, david greene, and don’t forget mr. jared zabransky.

good day.

cheeseburgers

if that was the truth, big ben would be backing up big snack… (cheap shot, I know…)

leftwich sucks

he’ll fail his physical anyway.

not an inspiring list there

Not a great list of free agents, is it? Shows you the lack of depth at that position in the NFL. We could, of course, wait a few weeks for the castoffs down in Florida—the Dolphins will jettison one, and the Bucs about 80.

Is Vinny Testaverde available? Just kidding. Though I’d rather have him than Tommy Maddox.

Considering that some teams start rookie QB’s, would it be so bad to have Dixon as our #2? Could he do any worse than Leftwich?

Batch only out 3-4 weeks.

So im not too concerned with this situation. Ben is pretty sturdy, and if he should happen to go down, i would rather have Dixon in there than just about all of the scrubs on the availability list. If Dixon does have to go in there we would probably let him throw it about 14 times and run the rest of the time. Kinda like what we did with Ben his rookie year.

Kind of agree....but

If Ben goes down and Dixon is in there, and he gets knocked for six, then what do you do? Need a reliable 2nd or 3rd choice there. It can happen. Heck it happened to us – in 2005 Ben was out for a few games and Charlie came in and won two, but in that second game vs the Browns he got banged up going for a touchdown, and we went to Tommy Maddox as the 3rd string…we lost the next game vs. the Ravens with him at the helm. 3rd string can be just as important as 2nd.

dixon or bust

I don’t want some 40 year old or some overweight pouting underachiever (Leftwich) QB’ing our team. Let’s keep things in house if we face an emergency. Just my two cents.

I think keep Dixon as the number two and see if Potts or some other guy can be a good number 3 till Charlie comes back….anyway you look at it though when Charlie comes back – they’re stuck with an additional QB – where’s Randle El when you need him? Maybe they shoudl let Hines practice a few snaps again. I dunno… I have to agree that I am less than impressed with the idea of getting Leftwhich on the team.

Can't leave it to chance

I agree with SCSteeler. The Steelers have to go after a vet. I think Dixon is a stud, but don’t forget he went down the end of his senior year. The question is are they looking at Leftwichor Culpepper or will they wait to see who Tampa drops? I don’t think you can wait though. They need to get someone in there asap so they can get comfortable with the system.

My Thoughts

on the subject are these; they are bringing in Leftwich because he is the most attractive of the QB left out there. If he is in any type of decent shape they will sign him. They will need him as an arm in camp and a battle tested QB in case. On top of that they will pick Leftwich’s brain on the Jag offense looking for a regular season edge.

agreed

let’s look at the positives of Leftwich I’m getting worried the more we harp on the negatives.
-Back in his Jags days, he ran a similar style of offense as we did. Pound the football on the ground, and manage the game. That will be similar to what we run if he has to come into the game at some point this year.
-Pick his brains about those danged Jags.
-I personally think he’s a tough S.O.B. He played a game at Marshall (back in his college days) with a broken leg on the last drive. His lineman had to carry him down the field. He simply would not come out of the game, he wanted to lead his team to victory that badly.

Leftwich and Culpepper?

Hey guys, I’ve seen a couple of sites report the Steelers are bring in both guys to compete for a backup spot, but as I haven’t heard this from anyone I trust (lolley wexell etc) I’m not sure I believe it.

Anybody else here this rumor?

Leftwich

I seem to remember that when he was QB of the Jags that they were advertised as a tough team even though they didn’t have a great passing game….also the season before he was release by them there big questions about his mobility, and judging on last year’s line play (hopefuly much much improved) he will need to move it every now and again.

I definitiely saw at least one net article with Culpepper mentioned.

Backup/s

I did see two articles that said Leftwich & Culpepper were coming in. I also read a report on Leftwich saying that he had lost 25 lbs. and was in great shape.
