Football Season in the Steel City

Having been born and raised West Coast, I've never been able to experience a Steelers game in the Burgh.  For that matter, I've never had the opportunity to experience much of the atmosphere that surrounds Steeler football in-season.  I'm posting this because I would like, from those of you who have the experience, to get an idea of what it's like to be in Pittsburgh when the Steelers are in-season, and looking strong.  For instance, I would have loved to have been in town during the 05 playoff push to experience what REAL FANS are like (my uncle and cousin were at the SB parade and said that 250,000 people lined the streets in 20 degree weather).

I lived in Tucson, AZ when the men's basketball team won the NCAA tourney in 97, and I've been in Sacramento for a couple good Kings teams, but from what I understand, it's not the same experience as the Steelers dominating the league.

Any of you out there who can chime in, please do.  I'm HOPEFULLY going to my first game in October...and I can hardly sit still just thinking about it.

Mecca

Walking over the Clemente Bridge on a crisp autumn day with Heinz in eye sight is a sight to behold. The boats on the river are all steaming towards the docks at Heinz. Once in the parking lot it is a sea of Black and Gold complete with Rock N Roll, tailgating and food grilling in the parking lot. School buses and Winnebago’s painted black and gold are everywhere. Everyone has a Steeler jersey with their favorite players number. Many are current but many are HOF Steelers of yesteryear. Everyone in the parking lots are your friends. It is easy to find a beer or some lunch and even the stoners are willing to share. Get a picture next to the Art Rooney statue for posterity.

Once inside Heinz there are stages with rock bands playing and fans mulling about everywhere. The food selection is all Pittsburgh from the Benkovitz fish sandwich to the world famous Primanti sandwich with Pastrami, egg. coleslaw and fries all piled sky high in between 2 pieces of sour dough. The Steelers walk of fame complete with lockers filled with artifacts will give you chills.

Once in your seat the view of the green grass and the rivers and city beyond is breathtaking. As the music blares and the starters are announced the crowd noise is deafening. Terrible towels swirl like the wind farms in Palm Springs. Unlike going to a game in AZ or SF it is near impossible to find an opponent’s shirt in the crowd. All of Pittsburgh keeps their tickets. You can count the Browns or Bengals shirts on one hand throughout the 65,000 in attendance. If the Steelers win the party continues in the lots into the night and all is well with the world. The most productive week in Pittsburgh is the week the Steelers get a W.

Come playoff time it is even more crazy. Buildings, windows and homes are decorated in black and gold. Car flags are everywhere. It is all the talk in town.
I make the pilgrimage from Cali to Mecca at least once a year. It is a must for any Steelers fan. You can get to Pittsburgh via Southwest now so it’s not too pricey. A game ticket can be had for $300 or so on stub hub, less around game time by neighboring PNC Park. It will be a day to remember forever. While in Pittsburgh don’t forget to do the Heinz Pittsburgh Heritage Museum (great exhibit on Pittsburgh sports in the 70’s) and grab a cut of Pittsburgh’s finest Pizza and a steak hoagie from Guiseppe at Aiello’s Pizza in Squirrel Hill. Tell him 50 sent you.

Blitz Brother

If you can get into town on October 26, you have a complimentary ticket waiting for you on the 20 yard line lower bowl for the game against the World Champion New York Giants. The ticket also comes with a free steak-fry tailgate.

Aiello's!!!!

Nice shout out to one of the great Pizza joints in the world. I used to be minneos kid in High School. But a little maturity and a slightly lower tolerance for for 6 quarts of oil per slice has matured my tastes.

I miss going “upstreet” in the Hill.

Up Street

The Sq Hill Cage, Rolling Rocks at Silky’s, The Manor, Aiello’s & Mineo’s having the best pizza and hoagies but Napoli’s having the best tunes on the juke box, Rhoda’s, Heads Together, the 99cent breakfast special at The Bagel Nosh, Nicks Greasy Spoon, Foreward Lanes, Nobody Shakes The Dice, Open Pantry on Beechwood, The green slide at Frick, Basketball instead of 6th and 7th period on the Hoop Court at Davis, homering over the short fence in right field at Whiteman Field…..I miss those days.

I've always been a Mineo's man myself

got some this past Xmas time matter of fact. There’s a lot of turnover on restaurants upstreet, but I fully expect to see the pizza joints still there in 50 years… :)

Northwest can put in some pretty decent prices. Actually saw Pit → Honolulu recently for 400 roundtrip…

Personally I think what is impressive is the mood outside of the arena. The steelers are the weather here and are always on everyone’s mind. They’re the easiest way to strike up a conversation and make a friend on the street or at the bar. When we win everyone walks around with grins on their faces, and when the steelers lose its a long week until next Sunday. Most people here live and breathe football.

Down the steps from me is where the high-schoolers play seemingly all weekend long and the cheers carry up the hill and wake me up on mornings where I’d rather be sleeping. A road overlooks the stadium where these kids play and there’s always a steady crowd of 20 or so people watching from above the arena that didn’t want to pay to go in, even in the rain.

I didn’t pay any attention to football before I moved here. It’s infectious and addicting, and other cities maybe love a sport as much, but no one loves a sport more than pittsburghers love their stillers. Come visit, we don’t bite.

"nocal"?

it’s norcal ;)

but for real, what part? let’s make a trip out to the burgh someday

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

i don't want to be associated with "norcal guy"

so i chose NoCal instead. if you’re from cali then you know who “norcal guy” is…he’s the guy with the extra-medium NorCal shirt (or Affliction or Ed Hardy) who wears his hat crooked with the bill curved up, has the stereotypical d-bag tattoos (like the nautical stars on his elbows, even though he was never in the Navy), and he walks around like he owns the place and everyone should “watch themselves” or he might kick someone’s ass. Yeah, we get a lot of those guys out here in Sacramento, so I do what I can to not associate myself with those guys. If you’re still not following me, take a look at the link below. This guy sums it up pretty well.

Hey that's my cousin!

Just kidding…LOL, there’s folks like that all over.

unfortunately

you are correct. there are “people” like this all over. the next step is weeding them out….

Additionally...

I might add that if you are watching the game at home or your favorite tavern the streets and stores are pretty free of traffic. This is especially true around PO time. All you’ll find out and about is some last minute shoppers or the few that are disinterested.

Stillers 'n at

NoCal, go to a game. It’s worth it.

I grew up in the area, but haven’t lived there for half my life. Nevertheless, as soon as I knew they were in the SuperBowl a couple years ago, I made plans to be “home” that weekend, just to be around “my people.” They’re insane, how much they live it and breathe it and love it. Every other person you pass on the streets in the city had on Steelers gear — hats, jerseys, jackets, gloves, scarves, socks, you name it. I borrowed my dad’s big puffy Steelers jacket, and countless people driving by — days before the game now — would honk and wave and cheer. It got more intense and celebratory the closer it was, and I swear to you on Saturday night in the bars, it was like all of us had been best friends for life, we were so chummy. Our Team had gone all the way, and the next day, we were gonna win it. It was mass euphoria, such intense excitement for all of us. And of course you know, we did win it!

I’m sure it was pademonium in the streets from the second the game ended, but unfortunately I had to miss it and get started driving back to DC in a snowstorm (btw, it snows a lot in Pittsburgh, did you know?). Was worth it though, and I’ve decided to go back up at least once a season every year, even if I don’t get tickets to the game. Might try for tix for my dad and me to the Cowboys match up this year (who won’t?). Maybe we’ll see you there?!!!
