Going to Iggles game
So luck has smiled upon me in my new home town of Philadelphia. I just got tickets to next weeks game.
First off I want to say that Philly is a great town. Good people, nice feel, big city with a small town atmosphere. Having said that, they have some of the craziest fans I've ever seen in professional sports. I actually went to one game here a couple years back. Eagles were losing. I don't think I've ever seen that kind of abuse heaped on a home team. It was actually disturbing. Having said that they also have some of the best fans anywhere. Real passion. Real tradition. You got love it.
This is also really exciting, since although I've been a die hard Steeler fan since I moved to this country in the summer of 1979, I have only been to one Steelers game in person. It was a Steelers-Bengals game and I got the tickets at Kickoff - from a friend who couldn't go. I made it down 10 minutes into the first quarter and the Steelers were down 14-0. It was, to say the least, a fairly depressing affair.
So, wish me luck.. I'll be wearing my Hines Ward Jersey in honor of Kwoog ( ; . I am looking forward to seeing, first hand, what this team is made off, against what could be a very good Eagles team.

That’s a bummer. One of them is guaranteed to be miserable afterward, so it’s a lose-lose situation.

Wearing your visiting team jersey to a game in Philly is fine… but you need to do your homework and be prepared.
1- They will harass you on the way to and into the stadium. Be prepared for it. If you can discuss accurate stats and current year trends (at least for us if not both teams) then you will establish yourself as a legit fan, not a bandwagoner. Most Philly fans respect other true fans. If you know more about your team than they do, they will usually back off.
2- Inside the stadium, keep your head on a swivel. As the game progresses, the jerks in the crowd will begin to emerge. Beer muscles are common in every stadium. Just keep an awareness of what’s going on around you so you can see trouble coming and respond appropriately.
3- At the end of the game, regardless of outcome there will be a few who want to either vent their frustration (b/c they lost) or gloat (you’ll know why), again, be prepared to respond appropriately. I recommend you consider your personal alcohol consumption quantity carefully to ensure you maintain your reflexes.
I went to school in Philly for 4 years. I went to the Steelers preseason game there last year. It is a great venue and most of their fans are truly devoted to their team and jsut want to enjoy themselves. Hopefully the small number that dont have any class dont ruin your trip.
Enjoy! GO STEELERS!!!

as long as they don’t set you on fire you’re usually ok

Enjoy Budda!
and bring us home a W.
Definitely agree with the above sentiments by war and whenever 50 and the Crew go Road Warrior with the Steelers we follow them. Sounds like sage advice.

Have a great time Budda
Grew up in the Burgh, spent 8 years in Philly going to college and working. Take the precautions in previous posts seriously. If we’re winning (IF???) don’t rub it in. I was planning on attending the game with a friend I grew up with who lived in Willingboro. As fate would have it, he suffered a heart attack and passed away two weeks ago. I met a neighbor of his at the funeral who is a rabid Eagle fan and who was my friend’ s trash talking partner. They were both looking forward to this game, and the two of us have decided that I will step in and keep the tradition going.
Given what the two teams showed these past two weeks, this has the makings of being a great, great game. Enjoy. I certainly will.

thanks all!
I appreciate the advice and take it seriously. I am not much of the trash talking type, but I realize that black and gold in the middle of a sea of green can invite unwanted attention.
The truth is that I am just stoked to see this team play live. I’ve been watching these guys pretty religiously for a while. I want to see what Troy and Ryan Clark are doing away from the play. I want to watch how Woodley work his man. I want to see Timmons run down the field on special teams. I want to see Kemo smack around line backers in the second level. And of course I want to see Hines block.
RickVa- that’s a sad and beautiful story. Glad you guys are honoring your buddy’s memory.
And PixsburghArn, if they are down 14-0 half way through the first and end up losing by 30 I might consider your advice and watch from home in the future.

Welcome Steelers Fans!!
Can’t wait to see all my fellow Steelers fans at the Eagles game on Sunday. I’m born and raised in Philly but a diehard Steelers fan all my life. (Budda, thanks for the nice words about the city.) I expect to see a sea of Black and Gold just like in any away game stadium. We’ll be tailgating Steelers-style before the game, and though my family has been warning me about my safety ( a 4:15 start allows plenty of time for those beer muscles to grow), I don’t expect any problems. I understand the Eagles fans’ frustration, but I’ll just smile secure in the knowledge that we have 5 rings and they do not. Go Steelers and everyone enjoy the game!
