Around SBN: How Not To Criticize Tom Brady For The Patriots' Loss

Best Young QB after Brady and Manning (P)?

OK Steelers fan.  Have a friendly questions from accross the country in Dallas.  Im comming over from Bloggin with the Boys with a question about the best "up and comming" young QB in the NFL after Tom and Payton.  Want to get your opinions.  Scounts Inc put out an article as to who the best young QB was:(in no order)  Ben Rothlisburger, Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, and Jay Cutler.  I think its a great questions to ask and I know your fandom will play into it, but try to look at it through the eyse of someone that has no partiality to anyone on the list.

The question is, who is the best young QB in the league?  I guess the best way to look at this, keeping your fandom out of it, is who you would want to start a team of your were to get a new franchise.  The arguement that Scounts Inc put out there was Big Ben and Eli have the only hardware.  Fair enough.  They gave Rivers mad props for palying in the AFC game with the torn ACL last year, which to me doesnt do much bc they lost the game.  Cutler, other than two great games this year, hasnt done anything.  Their knock on Romo was play in the big games.  The only true big game that his QB play wasnt his best was last year agains the GMen.  He played well enough to win the Seattle playoff game 2 years ago as a QB.  I dont put the drop snap on his "QB" play, but just a crappy fall out.  And remember, other than your boy Big Ben, no one does well in their first playoff appearances (aka Payton Manning lost first 6 games)

My thought would be to but Big Ben first, Romo second, Cutler Third and Eli and Rivers fourth and fith (either way).  I want to get your opinion as Steeler fans on what you would do.  I know Eli has a ring, but i do remember last December, everyone in NY was ready to cut off his head and ship him out.  I know, as FOOTBALL fans you can admit that your AMAZING DEFENSE won yall that ring (all throughout the playoffs) and Eli just didnt loose you any game.  He did step up and make some great plays, but do you think that Eli is truely a GREAT UP AND COMMING QB?  Or was he just in the perfect situation, as long as he didnt loose it for you?

I think Tony has what it takes to be good in this league for a long time.  As does Big Ben.  I really put these two above everyone else.  But i must say, if Cutler continues to play like he has started this year, he could be #1 or # 2 next year.

Its a tought thought.  And i want to try and keep my partiality out of it, but i just see the tangibles and intangibles that Ben and Romo have to be better than Eli as a STAR QB in this league.

Would love your thoughts.  Thanks for allowing me to post on your blogg.  Good luck!

I would put same order as you, Ben, Romo, Cutler, and Eli & Rivers aren’t really in the same class as any of those three. I think Cutler can also be great but we’ll see. I think Ben overall has the best mix of physical abilities, mental abilities, and that mental edge to win games. Not saying the other guys don’t have it, just Ben has the best combination of all the ingredients.

Hard to argue

Man… and here I was ready to do some yelling… I think ben’s record so far is amazing. The only thing to try to factor is who does the most with the least. Romo’s got one hell of a supporting cast, and realistically other than the line being porous so does Ben. River’s has Gates and Tomlinson (or he did) so he can’t complain. Cutler I think has the most room to complain. His wide outs and TEs are nothing to write home about and the running game is not what we’ve come to expect out of the bronco’s plug and play system.

For that reason I think Cutler deserves a lot of credit. He plays really well with very little. But over all it’s Ben then Romo for their history of winning. If Eli can play at a consistently good level for the year I’ll add him higher, but one good playoffs run does not a star make.

what are you thoughts on Brandon Marshall

and it looks like the kid Royal has something?
Who else did Denver have last year other than marshall? But Marshall is still a dang good receiver for anyone to through to. Schefler isnt the worst TE in the game either.
I agree, their running game has struggled in the last 4 years or so.

Better

I agree they’re looking better, but I’m just saying comparatively. I’ll take Hines and TO over Marshall. And I’ll take Witten and Heath over Schefler.

Eli could complain I guess. But Plax is pretty damn good and Shockey certainly has talent (don’t want him on my team though).

+1

Fair enough. But you have to be able to get the ball to your Talent and I think Romo sure does that with the best of them. I know time will tell but if i had to start a franchise today and live for the next 5 years, it would be Big Ben, Romo or Cutler and really any three of those would be fine with me.

the difference

I put Ben #1 and Romo #2 because those are the only guys I’ve seen who can truly take over a game and really will their team to victory. Cutler is #3 and he might be the most talented of the whole group, he’s also a bit younger than everyone else. Eli and Rivers are solid QBs but nothing special.

I'd put Cutler over Romo as number two.

As far as pure quarterback skills go Cutler is the best of the five. His undiagnosed diabetes was what was holding him back the past two years, but as far as accuracy, arm strength, vision, and so forth Cutler has all of them beat.

What puts Ben above Cutler are the intangables, being able to shrug off 300lb+ DEs, his scrambling instincts, his short memory when it comes to making a great play after a bad one, his porven track record, The Tackle, taking more hits than anyone else the past two years and being able to come back and play at such a high level, etc.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.
