Steelers Embarassed

That sucked.

Mourn together. It may help us all get through one of the most pathetic offensive performances in the modern era of professional football.

I guess Cleveland should have been a wakeup call. Seriously, if that team can sack Ben more than once what did we think a good front 7 was gonna do. I’m not even sure how you fix this line.

Also, with FWP totally stuffed – again, lots of line problems here – why didn’t they give Mendy a few carries?

I DO!!!!

For the love of Myron and all that is holy..put Max Starks in at right tackle and move Colon to the right guard…WHERE HE BELONGS

That was bad. On the bright side the D looked really good. On the bad side Ben is injured again and was sacked 8 times and hit a ton. Not good. Changes should be made on the OL. I refuse to believe that the backups can be as bad as the starters.Terrible.

Told you guys

FWP isn’t a westbrook. Not taht Westbrook had much of a chance to show up but Steeler’s RBs are not better.

Idk about that

I’ll give that Westbrook is damn good, but keep in mind his o-line isn’t made of shit, and two, Parker barely got a chance to run the damn ball.

'Told you"

PLease dude. Westbrook wasn’t doing shit when he was in there. He doesnt match up well against our defense. I thought Parker could have had a little better day, but we refused to run the ball consistently.

A push for them two. Both ineffective. ‘Told you’ is just dumb.

Reminded me of the Baltimore game two years ago

Complete annhialation by the defense against us. I honestly wanted a referee to call the game like a fight. I wanted to leave town long before the game ended and not get hurt. The only difference was our defense kept us in the game. I said at halftime that the only way we can win is some fluke, like Ike picking that ball and going in, or a punt return, or fumble recovery TD. It was that bad. We needed a fluke, and sadly, I started saying that at halftime.

I am hoping for a news story stated that the steelers players were all infected with some unknown disease that causes them to flail ineptly against a superior opponent, but that the results from the disease are temporary and disappear after a week.

o-line

was truly OFFENSIVE. hartwig is obviously not the answer at center. kemo sucks, plain and simple. not only is he awful in pass protection, he looked completely lost on the majority of plays…i won’t even get into his 4 penalties. marvel smith got beat on the outside rush routinely, willie colon looked like a practice squad player, and kendall simmons, our lone first round pick on the line….well, he certainly didn’t play like a guy who was once a first round pick. he didn’t play like a guy who was once a first day pick.

also, bruce arians’ play calling once again is questionable in my eyes. i know that ben had no time to throw and that willie had no room to run, but it didn’t appear that ANY adjustments were made at any point in the game. good teams are lead by good coaches, and good coaches make the necessary adjustments to keep their teams competetive. arians didn’t do that today (at least i didn’t notice any). on one play (in which ben was sacked of course) we had ALL four receivers in the same place…all four patterns were run to the same location on the field. what is that? who calls something like that?

on a very positive note…the eagles hung 37 on the cowboys last week, and their offense could only manage 13 points on our d. props to the secondary today. yes, mcnabb threw for almost 200 yards, but he also threw the ball almost 40 times. troy is back (thank God) and i thought that mcfadden and ike played pretty well today also. foote, woodley and timmons all looked real good today (i can’t see timmons staying out of the starting 11 for much longer). but, where was big snack and aaron smith? i saw hoke make more plays than snack. did he get hurt?

anyways, way too long of a post. all i know is that next week we face the top defense in the league…so it could be another long day for ben. furthermore, if i were kevin colbert and the rest of the FO, i would do everything possible to protect my $100 million franchise qb. pathetic.

Oy-Line

So I just got back from the game. So sad. What a shame for only my second game. I will post more comments later, (like can you bench your offensive coordinator?) , but for right now, I will just tell a short story.

So I am coming out of the “game” and getting abused by festive Eagles fans. As the ramp breaks out into spontaneous chants of E-A-G-L-E-S, I spy a woman wearing a Steelers Jersey in front of us. Figuring their is safety (or dignity) in numbers I walk up a bit closer, which is the point that I realize that she is not wearing one of the usual jerseys you see on Steelers fan. Not a Ben, or a Troy or even a Bettis or Lambert. She has a number 72, Darnell Stapelton jersey. I compliment her on her nice jersey and ask her where she got it.

“He’s my son.” she says. I tell her all the nice things I remember reading about her boy on this site and we chat for a while. She couldn’t be nicer. I tell her that while I wish no harm to Justin Hartwig, I really would have liked to have seen her son play.

That chance meeting and our secondary where the only things that made me smile all day.

There were problems with our defense, but in the end the eagles were held to 15 and the score was in balance by 9. If we want to be fair to the eagles the score should be changed to 50-10. We were dominated, embarrassed, pushed around, and pretty much looked like little children. Kudos to the eagles.

Live and learn. We have a lot of learning to do if we want to come anywhere near the Lombardi, and thanks to the eagles for letting us know.

Pitiful

Man, that was an Aaarrsss kicking right there. Bruce Arians has to be about clueless for giving up 6 sacks with the same blitz before he decided to keep the tight end in there to block along with one running back. Not that it really helped that much.

— One of my best friends is a Eagles fan, so he has another year to talk smack. Well, at least we did win a few Super Bowls.

— Steelers D have nothing to hang their head about. BMac deserves to keep that starting job. A 100 percent Troy Palomula is incredible. Let’s hope Big Snack’s groin is Okay. He looked like he pulled it near the end.

— Now for the offense. Nothing good to say. The OL is an absolute mess. How do you fix this? You can’t have your $100M man being beat on like a drum for the whole game. That was as bad an offensive performance that I’ve seen from any team lately.

— Well, the Big Bad Ravens are next. The Steelers got to get this next game. Good that we’re facing a rookie QB. Bad because the Steelers never run on the Ravens & got the personnel to beat on Ben some more.

Thoughts?

by datruth4life on Sep 21, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

a lot of my thoughts

Bmac definitely needs to start. He’s another playmaker. Deshea will see plenty of time at nickel.

I think we’ll be fine against the Ravens. But who knows… If our offense shows up like that again it could be a long night.

Also Troy is amazing… Best interception I’ve ever seen.

by Chicago Steeler on Sep 21, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it was a scheme thing or an Arians thing. The Eagles just beat the hell out of the Steelers OL. It was a talent thing.

Not much else to say about it.

We were pitiful on all fronts.

by steelguy99 on Sep 21, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't agree

No doubt the o-line deserves blame, but Arians should be fired for that performance. It was an embaressment. How do you not make and adjustment after that first 4 sacks and fumble. You see the same blitz over and over and over and you keep calling the same plays. There is plenty of blame to go around but as far as I am concerned it starts with Arians.

by SteelerBuddha on Sep 21, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

absolutely

I woke a few of my roommates up with my screaming at the TV and attempt at vocal telepathy to Mr. Arians. Had it worked, those watching the telecast might have seen him shed a few tears from some of the wonderful words I had for him. Where were the dumpoff plays? the adjusted routes? The extra TE or RB protection for Ben. SOMETHING. Our line was bad, yes, but think about it for a second. It’s a fairly new unit as far as playing together in these positions goes and the Eagles kept sending many more bodies than we would stick in the trenches. There were several miscommunications resulting from this and they were simply overwhelmed all night. It’s Bruce’s job to understand this and react to it. There should have been help for the line. There should have been more bodies left back to block. Or route runners spreading the field to exploit the few the Eagles left in pass coverage. Maybe sneak a stun gun on the field for Kendall Simmons to make up for his serious lack of ability as an offensive tackle. Ugh.

by TheCincinnatiConqueror on Sep 21, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree

And not mention that when they deside to keep extra bodies back the play call is for a deep pass into double cover versus Samuel the dude with the highest inerception stat since who knows when.

Although Willie was stuffed a lot of the time, there were a few normal looking decent runs mixed in-between sacks. Why didn’t they just keep running it at them? They might be smaller and faster, but we could have worn them down. At least the run plays wouldn’t have torn up Ben.

My two kids and Dad were in the room, so most of my cussing was into a beer bottle, but damn if I didn’t want to kick Arians ass.

I thought the D did great – Troy was Troy (and the highlight of the game for me was his backwards tackle – wierd), but I thought we didn’t pressure enough – the bend don’t break doesn’t work when your offense is sucking every egg in the henhouse. Still though they kep us in the game and it would’ve been only the D or ST that could have won it for us.

Oh well….

by SCSteeler on Sep 22, 2008 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s a bummer that our ST return game is absolutely uninspiring. At least the coverage is (mostly) great this year.

Disgusting Display

Steelers Defense kept them in the game. That is a Playoff caliber D. Some mistakes but secondary was good, got some turnovers and kept Philly out of the end zone most of the day. LeBeau is a real coach. After McNabb gouged the D for some yards and points the D clamped down.

Offense should be ashamed. I know Philly is good but they looked like the 85 Bears today. Where is Max Starks? Can he seriously be as inept as Colon was today? Or Simmons? Why does Z & A not play him? Where is an adjustment to the blitz Philly ran 6 plays in a row? Ben was knocked around and then became careless with pick, fumbles and safety. Cost us 5 at the end of a close game. I am still incredulous that Tomlin didn’t kick a FG and go onside! It scares me when I am 2 steps ahead of our coach.

Worried about 7. Looked banged up and the BrownRavens will kill him next week if we don’t sit him or protect him. I don’t know if the O line I saw today is capable of that. But a W makes everything alright. Beat Baltimore.

Thats what happens when

There’s no accountability. Zeirlein should have been fired a long time ago. Philadelphia obviously saw a gaping weakness in O-Line from film study. How is it that we don’t know our own weaknesses and patch them up?? We weren’t physically beaten we were outschemed.

As Tsun Szu says,….“he who knows his enemy and knows himself, will win 100% of the time. He who knows himself, but not his enemy will win 50% of the time. He who doesn’t know the enemy and doesn’t know himself,..will never win.”

I cant understand why Bruce Arians didnt run the ball 30-35 times. The Eagles have a an undersized D-line, even with a 2.0 yard average we could have worn them down in the fourth qtr and saved Ben from getting hurt .

RIGHT

When your getting beat in pass protection somtimes its easier to fire off the ball and beat up on some defenders. Impose your will on a defense that will always slow down a blitzing team. Stick to it and dont give up pounding the ball.

by Madman1978 on Sep 22, 2008 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We're in trouble

I felt like the Eagles found a trick in Madden that guaranteed a sack on every play. This is the exact same defense the Giants run: oversized LB’s that blitz on every play. Both teams are totally inept in coverage, but if Ben can’t get the ball out, it won’t matter. The Ravens are also fully capable of doing this to our OL. Arians looked totally inept, but I can’t say Whisenhunt didn’t do the exact thing in ‘06. We need some sort of plan that can beat this scheme. Ben will not make it very long if we don’t. I don’t know if it’s 3 step drops or changing the snap count and Hartwig’s signature head bob snap signal or what, but we have to do something.

On the bright side, Troy and McFadden looked pretty good. McFadden might be our best corner. He makes good plays on the ball and actually catches it. Brilliant. Better get him back on the bench.

i'm not so sure its scheme

I think the 5 guys on the O-line on the whole are not very bright or very talented

by schnifin on Sep 21, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is my take.

Last week I saw Willie colon face two blitzers, and choose the novel option of not blocking either. Today that was Kendall Simmons’ signature move. Even Marvel Smith got beat a few times, and Chris K, while a great run-blocker, doesn’t seem to have wrapped his head around pass protection.

I’m not trying to absolve Arians, as I don’t think he was impressive today (seven-step drops after six sacks in one quarter? Really Bruce?), but he wasn’t the big problem.

Luckily, most teams don’t blitx as often or as well as the Eagles. But that Giants game is looking scary.

they kept bringing Heath inside to block, no play action etc but how can you even tell if they’re adjusting when you have d-linemen coming unblocked right up the middle because no one blocks him

Memories. . . .

Remember the last two years when Ben didn’t throw for many 6-7 yard receptions?

Remember the last two games when we did and won?

Remember the Cowboys scored over 30 on the Eagles D last week? Still looking forward to playing Dallas?

Tomlin can’t put up with this for much longer, but then, what did he expect coming into the season with the league’s worst O-line?

Bottom line: Every team is going to try what the Eagles did. Maybe Ben should take a long vacation.

I spent halftime hoping that Pittsburgh would make some changes and come back out with a new game plan. But I was wrong. It was pathetic. Our defense did pretty well, holding the Eagles to only 15 points, but two of those points were our fault. The safety should never had happened. Face it—the O line was manhandled today.

Easy now...

Let’s settle down a bit. We looked awful on offense yes. But we were in it too the very end. We didn’t get whooped as bad as the patriots.

Our defense looked amazing. This unit will be special. Our offensive game plan was offensive. (jokes aren’t flowing well tonight) There need to be changes made. I wish I believed that our Oline would be changed this week. Simmons is a swinging door and Colon’s not much better. But everyone played poorly.

I guess I’m saying we’re still the cream of the crop in the AFC North. We’ll need to get a game plan together, but we could afford to lose this game. We just can’t afford to have Big Ben beaten like a pinata.

when is mendenhall going to get some carries?

i look around the league and see a number of rookie rbs getting extensive playing time (felix jones, chris johnson, matt forte, darren mcfadden) but delicious hasn’t carried the ball in the last two. games i understand that running with a rookie may not be the best idea when trailing in the second half on the road. but, neither is calling pa passes when we havent established the run, AND when we can’t block anyone. plus, willie’s speed was completely nullified by the fact that bunkley and patterson were in the backfield about the same time he was getting the ball. also, its good to know that our $7 million man is seeing the field so much. paging Max Starks…

look at the last few super bowl champs…they all controlled the line of scrimmage, both on defense and on offense (see Cowboys of the early 90s). the giants had the best pass rush in the league. the colts year in year out have one of the best olines in the league. the pats are stacked both lines. and when we won it in 2005, we had an incredible run blockin line that opened holes all over the field, and still gave a second year qb enough time to go through his progressions.

here’s to the steelers spending all 8 of their draft picks next year on o and d lineman.

Get rid of Simmons, move Colon inside, he’s better there anyway and put Starks on the outside. On defense, put Timmons in full time, Foote missed several tackles and just doesn’t scare many defensive linemen.

by Steev1705 on Sep 21, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Step #1 is to get Max Starks in there. Colon looked like shit, and he has no business playing tackle. Not quick enough. Time for Stapelton or Essex to get a shot too. Hartwig’s not the answer.

We have made some pretty baffling OL personnel moves lately

1. It seems to me that our OL has been in a steady decline since 2004 when we went 15-1. That was a great OL. In 2005 we had a pretty good run blocking OL, but we couldn’t really pound it against good teams and our pass protection was OK although there were some terrible games (Baltimore for example). In 2006, our OL bottomed out – we were just terrible that year, plain and simple. Last year was an upgrade, but we still never really dominated a good defense.

2. Through the last two years Roethlisberger is the most sacked QB in the league. We just gave him an enormous contract, but we CLEARLY have had pass protection issues since 2006. Roethlisberger is our best QB since Bradshaw and we are doing nothing to protect him.

3. I have been happy with our 1-2 round selections the last couple of years (Timmons/Woodley then Mendenhall/Sweed) but our 3-4 round picks have not addressed glaring needs on the offensive line. We have drafted a punter, a backup QB, a backup TE – despite clear deficiencies on the offensive line.

4. Why on Earth are we paying $7 million (or whatever it is) to our backup right tackle?

by houksyndrome on Sep 21, 2008 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

5. Why doesn't Essex ever get to play?

He has done a decent job in pass protection every time he has played, yet we play these guys who can’t pass protect worth a crap.

by houksyndrome on Sep 21, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alright guys. We used all of these arguments all summer and all pre-season. I think we should probably focus on what the guys can actually due to improve play (Hartwig calling out assignments better, Arians calling more screens) as opposed to all of those “crazy” ideas like playing Starks and replacing Hartwig.

by steelguy99 on Sep 21, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was going to write a fanpost to try and get a thread going about that

As far as the things that we can correct:

1. Have some short, quick high percentage options available on every pass play. We ran very few slants etc. even when we knew they were coming.

1a. We ran so many SLOW developing plays – several bunch formation plays where all three guys run together for 10-15 yards before they cut to get open – by then Roethlisberger was picking sod out of his facemask.

2. Coordinate our protection schemes better – lots of plays where we doubled one guy and let another guy come in totally free. Philly was running some good blitzes so give credit where its due.

3. Screen plays and draw plays to maybe slow them down.

4. Hope for some defensive touchdowns – Troy Polamalu, I’m looking your way ;)

its interesting you say that

phil simms pointed out that pittsburgh is one of the only teams in the league that runs a 3 te set (slow developing) and also uses the bunch formation more than any team in league (very slow developing and awful spacing wise). i still remember on one play yesterday see 4 receivers all within 6-7 yards of each other (ben was sacked of course). so much for spreading the field.

Isnt Starks playing. Hes our best, or second best player on the line. He looked good this offseason. I dont get it.

I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, so lets give up on our pipe dream. I think we’d need several more games like this, and as much as I’d like to see starks in, I’d rather not see a game this horrible ever again.

by steelguy99 on Sep 22, 2008 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

dude

We’ll see Starks this week. Trust me. The coaches of the Pittsburgh Steelers can’t have a game like that and not make SOME SORT of change.

by Blitzburgh on Sep 22, 2008 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m with you man, but our offensive line has seemed excessively unimaginative. Starks was never even in contention in the pre-season, and it took three games for Hartwig to overtake Mahan.

What sucks is that I think we’d all agree that Colon is probably better than Simmons at guard. Can we put him at guard though if starks goes in? No, because he never got any reps at all in the pre-season, training camp, etc. Even if starks is a mild upgrade (and he won’t be much more based on performance last year or this pre-season), the line has too many other problems starting with the RTs number one man to the left.

I hope you’re right, but I’d take a bet in vegas we’ll see the same 5 next week. I’m historically bad at betting though.

our third round pick this year

bruce davis (olb) hasn’t seen the field. neither has 4th rounder tony hillis (ot). if you look around the league, you see many more rookies playing than you do with the steelers. i see other 2nd round receivers like desean jackson and eddie royal and jordy nelson making big contributions on offense, but i can’t even tell you sweed’s jersey number. last year, all 8 giants draft picks played in the super bowl. have we played 8 rookies in the past 3 seasons?

by NoCal-SteelCity on Sep 22, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's frustrating isn't it

But that’s how we do it with most rookies, which as I have always detested. I have no problem with the slow acclimation of these Rookies, but the scarce play time is pretty confounding…Give the guys a chance. You know what I’m gonna make a post about this.

well

Thats not necessarily a terrrible thing. After all, we DID draft Hampton, Keisel, A Smith, Ike, BMac, etc. We have lots of veterans right now. Hines, Santonio, FWP. Gay, our 2nd year CB, is now seeing the field. Woodley and Timmons are now big parts of the team. Let’s not get carried away about lack of developing or playing our draft picks. I still think B Davis is going to be a nice add to our team. Just might not be till next year if/when Harrison walks.

Screens

I dont understand why we didnt use any screens against their blitz. There was no secret they were coming. I quick screen or a slant would could have kept ben off his ass a little more. Our line didnt know who they were supposed to be blocking half the time. Sad sad day.

we tried

They defended them well. That was part of the pressure probblem. They had outstanding coverage on us most of the day, even while blitzing.

arians screens

ARE SO BAD, too. Seriously, theyre like the kinds that work in mid-major college football. He needs to watch New Orleans play and how quickly Brees gets the ball out in the flat to Bush. FWP should be getting some of those types of looks.

by Blitzburgh on Sep 22, 2008 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the solution...

Pittsburgh should put Leftwich in there to be pummelled and protect Big Ben the only way that they can at this point: by keeping him on the sidelines. They will need a full year or more to find the personnel to turn around the O-line, and a sub-500 season will at least give them the high draft picks to rebuild. Also, Zierline should be fired and Arians’ job should be put at risk. You cannot justify keeping that offensive coaching staff (pun intended) with play so bad that even Phil Simms couldn’t remember when he’d seen an offensive line whipped so badly.

by ec on Sep 21, 2008 11:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well that would mean throwing in the towel already

but…I agree that the o-line is a major problem. Anyone think a trade could be in order? I mean It doesn’t happen all that often and I know the Steelers prefer to build through the draft, but seriously, if you want any hope at all of going anywhere this year, then something is gonna have to change.

trade?

We could go after center LeCharles Bentley before the Rams pick him up. And guard Chris Naeole wasn’t resigned by Jax yet. But it takes a while for an o-line to gel, so I doubt bringing anyone in is going to solve the problem now, nor is moving the guys into different positions with the season now underway. No, this team is an o-line away from a real shot at the Super Bowl and it is a real shame that the past and current coaching staff has been so neglectful of it for the last three years. Truly shameful.

Oline, Oline Coah, O Coordinator

This sits directly at their footsteps. I’m remember the day when we didn’t care if we gain 0, 1, or 2 yards, we would still run the rock.

Also, we only started passing on 1st down when this limited the blitz opportunities. Also, and someone else brought this up, what about no Huddle. This would have kept Ben upgright and right minded. Dude was looking seriously deranged from all of the hits.

We didn’t run 1 screen, we ran 1 draw, we didn’t run up the middle. Remember when Denver tried that in the SB run. We ran Jerome right down their throats.

I’ve always doubt Arians (Clev Browns????), I though Ben had matured enough to check out of bad plays into good. This is what separates Brady and Manning from Ben. Ben goes for the kill shot every pass. Dude sometimes a check down is a good thing.

by 72Steeler on Sep 21, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

good points...

Arians is not very smart ro adaptable. That is for sure. More check downs, screens and no-huddle plays might have helped. But Phillie was tremendous and the Steelers were little girls in comparison. No last-minute adjustments could have overcome months, if not years, of incompetent drafting and training. When it comes to the o-line, they need to blow it all up and start over.

by ec on Sep 21, 2008 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, maybe that’s one reason they’ve declined (so far) to give M. Smith or Kemo contract extensions – they already realize that this line is just unsalvagable and it’s probably better just to start from scratch.

If that was the reason – and, of course, it’s probably not, but whatever – I could almost agree with them. We not only need a line that’s more physical, but one that’s SMARTER as well. And, as everyone else has pointed out, we need to be able to adjust to situations in game. I don’t think this is asking a lot of Arians cause, after all, it is his frickin’ job.

by BluegrassSteeler on Sep 22, 2008 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Time to replace not panic

Starks for Colon. Colon for Simmons.

However, if we had ran the ball, which we had an opportunity (we were only down 4 points and we were passing like we were down 400). We could have given the line and Ben a chance by running head first into their line.

Our Off Coord and Oline Coach need to realize this is Pittsburgh … We live and die by our ability to run the rock no matter what.

Love Colon hustle, however, he’s too slow and short to reach those fast rushing ends.

Simmons, is the biggest leak on the line. He misses blocks continuously and gets beat on run plays. I’ve watched every game in slow motion only to watch him miss blocks. In the Clev game, he fell on his face and missed the block that would have turned a 9 yd gain into a 30 yd gain.

by 72Steeler on Sep 22, 2008 12:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't remember starks being a pro-bowler

While I am not against shaking stuff up. I do think that it begins again with the coordinator. I want to hear Arians take a public flogging for this one. That may have been the worst called game I have ever seen. You cannot tell me that in a game where you QB got sacked 5 times before half time and that’s not counting 2 runs of 1 yard, two that were called back on penalties, and a whole passel of close calls, you make absolutely, not a single meaningful adjustment. Not one.
It was insulting and horrible to watch. We got out coached plain and simple.
Yes our O-Line played bad. Yes Ben was probably injured before the game started and looked more and more dazed as the game went on. Yes, our receivers didn’t step up and make excellent plays that could have helped. But bottom line, you cannot condone running the same play over and over and over and over again when the results are so clearly disasterous. they barely even bothered to change their protection schemes until the seconds half.

I realize I am just pissed after having to watch our franchise QB get treated like a tackling dummy, and I will probably calm down by the end of the week, but I think you should be able to bench coordinators. Somebody needs to go up to Arians, take the clipboard out of his hand, tell him to go sit his ass on the bench for a week or two and let someone else have a try.

Colon breaks it down

“It has to be correctable,” Colon said. “Any team that watches this tape right now is going to understand we’re suffering with the blitz coming at us and if we don’t get it done, they’re going to blitz the hell out of us.”

Yup…

Everybody calm down!

Come on folks what do you truly expect. Our offensive line is not the greatest. I can see teams that will play us in the future doing the same things. Philly’s offensive line just had more desire than our line in this contest. I thing this will be a learning lesson for our offensive line our offensive coaches and our offensive unit, We will adjust because we have to. Philly gave every opponent we face the blueprint, which we already new. It was just a matter of time. And told you this pn may fanpost last monday. Trust me we will adjust because we have no choice. I don’t think we need to make any personnel changes or anything like that. We got our tails kicked and that’s apart of football. We are a veteran team with some youth. That is still deemed potentally dangerous.

Just need to learn and stop providing a one demensional offesive schemes like the last three games. If you don’t believe me, check all the previous games.

Go steelers. We love you!

my two cents

Can’t say much about he negative parts that hasn’t already been said. But just for the hell of it, I think the blame goes on the O-line, Ben, and Arians. O-line for obvious reasons, Ben because when he did get SOME blocking he held the ball too long, and Arians for obvious reasons.

Also, Holmes dropped some passes which was disappointing. Harrison looked fairly slow. Parker missed some cuts and opportunities (yes the O-line didn’t block for him but there were at least a couple of holes he missed). Our D-line misses Kiesel to some degree, almost all their rushing yards came from running to the left.

My suggestions – put Starks in at RT and take Simmons out and put something in his place, anything. I have defended him for the longest time but this was a horrible, horrible performance. This may sound crazy but I wish we still had Mahan and threw him in at guard, couldn’t hurt.

Put Essex in at Marvel’s place if only to send a message to him, at least. Marvel has better physical ability but he played poorly.

POSITIVES – yes, there are some and they aren’t all about the defense, amazing I know.

First though, the D. While struggling a little in the first half they absolutely shutdown the Eagles in the 2nd half. McFadden looked awesome as did Troy (what an amazing INT). Foote impressed me as well, with all the that Timmons is placing on him he certainly took a giant step forward in retaining his starting role. WHile we didn’t record an amazing amount of sacks (unlike the Eagles) our pressure on McNabb and Kolb forced both INTs and many poor throws. I was very impressed but our D.

Now for the offense, Heath finally got involved as did Washington. It was nice seeing Washington getting the chance to make some plays. With all the talk about him in camp I was disappointed after the first two games. But he played well against a very good Eagles secondary. Leftwich looked competent as a back-up. He was getting rid of the ball quicker then Ben was.

leftiwch

Some good thoughts in there, but they went to the Prevent when Leftwich came in. Dogs had been called off. It would have been much much uglier with Byron in there the whole game. Not that I thought u were suggesting he be in there over Ben.

Anyway, you’re right. We can bounce back and it looks like theres just no great teams in the AFC. Last year, there wer several and it was hard to rationalize any notion that we were as good as those top teams. Might be a bit dif this year. Hopefully.

by Blitzburgh on Sep 22, 2008 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

for the most part they did call of the dogs but there were a couple of blitzes in there and he still got out of there scott free with that one exception. And don’t forget, even with Ben in there and they only sent 3 after him he still got sacked, or at least rushed. And like you said, of course I am not suggesting Ben be replaced, I was just making light of a terrible situation (mainly because byron has been known to take forever to throw, is wind up alone takes 3 days).

I wouldnt say that i am not worried but I am not overly worried (I guess thats the word I am searching for). We haven’t won there in decades and we can learn from this. I bet the O-line dominates the Ravens next week.

hear hear

Hope you’re right about next week. I just hope we don’t try to stick with the same lineup, like we did for most all of last year. Max Starks needs to play, period. At minimum. I’d also love to see how Stapleton does. So long as we change things up and try to remedy the problem in a way that involves more than just crossing our fingers, ill be fine with that.

by Blitzburgh on Sep 22, 2008 2:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree

I believe starks needs to play also for more then just the money reason. I thought he looked good at the end of last year. He certainly can’t play any worse then Colon did today. Plus, he was the RT on a Super Bowl winning team….

They should do the old college basketball trick if the team isn’t doing well. Pull the starters (in this case, the iffy O-linemen) and replace them with the back-ups for a short period of time. This should send a message to them. Kemo can stay in and maybe Hartwig, but Essex should take Marvel’s spot. Starks should take Colons, and either move Colon over to guard, throw Stapleton in there, or hell, even Hills, anyone. Just try it for at least a play.

My two cents

This is my first post. eventhough I’ve been reading for years now. I’m compelled to write because I agree with the fact that some changes need to be made from the top down. I place most of the blame on coaching. We got outcoached first and toremost.. Bruce Arians and Coach Z. stunk up the joint. Football is a game of matchups and adjustments and we didnt do much of that at all today. Its easy to just blame the line but I think the coaches have to shoulder most of the blame. We got outcoached today and I can honestly say in 32 years of watching the Steelers, I cant remember getting just beat down. Doing the same thing over and over again with the same negative results is Insanity. Yeah our Oline is average at best, and definitely stunk it up today, but they are professionals. The Eagles made us look like a poor college team. I dont recall too many NFL Offenses ever getting dominated like we did today. I’m embarassed.

The fact that were sitting Max Starks at this point tells me its coaching as well

Having said all that, I live and die with the Steelers and we will get this figured out Im certain, but it must start at the top.

Thanks for your two cents. Great stuff, and I’ll be addressing similar points this week. I hope you jump in again if you have time.

You’re right. Embarassed was the right word. I watched in a bar, and we were laughing in disbelief, making jokes about how the next sack was coming. That’s not life as a Steelers fan, but that was reality today. Sad.

and in a hurry!
Since i live too damn far away from Pittsburgh, I was unable to watch the game. :(
However, did watch the game play by play on NFL.com. While yelling what the hell are they doing I couldn’t help ask how do you get Sacked in the shot gun ? Answer your O-LINE!
I think he was sacked 6 times while in the shot gun! Sorry but something is wrong there.

glad ure chiming in

But I noticed a comment you made about the defense in a separate post. If you werent able to watch the game, it would have been impossible to see just how great we played on defense. On offense, following online was enough. A bag of shit is a bag of shit, no matter which medium you’re viewing it from. But not the case with our D yesterday. They were remarkable.
