Why the steelers?

A more light-hearted topic in the lead up to this monday night game.

How did you (and by “you” in this response I mean the collective "you") become fans of the steelers? How did that start for fans not brainwashed by growing up or living in pittsburgh? Do you have family members, friends, ex’s that liked them? Was it their physical style of ball-playing? Did you just need someone to cheer for and pittsburgh just came off a great season so you figured you’d go with them? Do you like the underdog and decided to go with them after a bad season?

may seem a bit ludicrus

Coming from the guy who brings you Steelers writing year round but my affinity grew out of a simple spite for the Cowboys growing up in Austin, TX. Being forced to watch the Cowboys each and every week prior to Sunday Ticket, while the Cowboys were at the height of their greatness in the 90s, I grew sick of them quickly.

I swear, even at like age 8, I knew Michael Irvin had serious personal issues. My mom always used to say Jimmy Johnson was ‘tacky and vile’ or something along those lines.

So, after reading about or watching one of those NFL films shows, about the Steelers and the Cowboys rivalry from back in the day, I adopted them and the rest was history. Sure it’s not as wholesome as growing up listening to the team over the radio with my pops, but it’s better than bandwagoning the Cowboys for georgraphy’s sake alone if you ask me.

Of course, once I started to like them, there were plenty of admirable qualities about the team, its players, and the ownership.

I think picking teams out of rivalries sake is perfectly valid. I’ve been rooting against the yankees for a long time but never have liked baseball enough to pick a favorite alternate. If I wasn’t already an obsessed fan of the Steelers I would have become a lifelong fan of the giants. Not because of them winning the SB, but, well, you know…

I lived in Sewickley for 3 years

from 4th grade to 6th and I guess that’s just when I started paying attention to sports. I have been a huge fan of all Pittsburgh sports ever since. I still to this day remember beating the crap out of my little brother for laughing when we lost to the Chargers in the ’94 (i think) AFC championship. I was 12. :)

First Game

The first football game I ever watched was SBXIII. I was eight years old and just getting into sports. When I watched that game. I thought “WOW!” I fell in love with the Steelers then and have been a fan ever since. The irony is I live in Florida and have most of my life and I am surrounded by Steeler fans and have been most of my life. Best fanbase of any team!

Here We Go Steelers,Here We Go!!!!

BTW..As a consequence of that game, I despise the Cowboys.

Same here

I immigrated to this country and we were placed in Wilkes Berrie, PA. Man, talk about a depressing town back then. First Football game I ever watched was the same game, SBXIII. My uncles told me to root for the Steelers. They didn’t tell me it was a repeat and that they already knew the outcome. None the less, man, I was hooked and still am.
Anxiety attacks everytime they play, I swear my heart was racing throughout the whole game last night. Happy on Mondays after a win. Sad when they lose so much so I can’t even read/watch anything football related til the next win.

First game part2

Coming from a none pro football watching family, the 1st game I ever saw was SBXIII, I was pretty much hooked on the Steelers then. Didn’t hurt being 6 and getting to stay past my bedtime with all the grown ups. I became completely hooked after seeing the Mean Joe Greene coke commercial. Talk about the power of youth marketing, seeing one of my heroes give his jersey to a kid my age…wow! Fan for life.

In the Family

My mother’s side of the family is from just outside of the Pittsburgh area, and we try to visit them every year. Coincidentally my father is a huge Dallas fan. He tried real hard to raise me up to be one too, but it’s so damn hard to like them.

Germany

Am I remembering correctly that you’re in Germany retibution? That’s quite a haul to make it to Pittsburgh every year.

Immaculate

Age 9 in Oakland…across from University Of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral Of Learning after basketball league…huddling around a teammates transistor radio…we’re listening to Jack and Myron call the first in Pittsburgh playoff game against Stabler’s Raiders. Immaculate Reception. Pandemonium. Jubilation. Heart Stopping. Spine Tingling. Car’s honking. Dancing in the streets…I saved the Pittsburgh Press the next day and followed the Steelers religiously every week since. I have maybe missed a couple games (mostly preseason) since but have seen/heard virtually every snap since 12/23/72.

Just to be againts my fav uncle

I’m From Mexico, in the 80’s the only pro-football you can watch were the Cowboys, my uncle is a Cowboy fan, he is 10 year older than me, so we hae a great relationship, most of it, punching and he bulling me all the time, one sunday when we was watching a Cowboys game, the analyst was explaining the two super bowl loses at the hand of the Steelers, from that minute the Steelers became the “Thing” that hurt much more my uncle than my little fists :) since then i follow the Steelers like a religion. thanks for cable, and Sunday ticket, i can watch the Steelers live.

Lived

in the Burgh when i was like 3-5 or so. Don’t remember much of that really, but my very first memory is a Pirates game (starring Barry Bonds!) and watching the Steelers from our small house in the South Hills on TV. Had two older brothers who were more mentally capable and thus big Steelers fans and I obviously first liked the Steelers, and when we moved to upstate NY me and my brothers always stayed loyal, die-hard Steelers fans. Even though my wimp dad became a loser Bills fan. HAH! 4 Super Bowl losses later (I was 5 in 1989, so my dad became a Bills fan in 90), that’s what he gets for jumping ship. I’ve never let him live it down.

and in fact

When the Steelers beat the Bills a few year ago (and kept them out of the playoffs) with our 2nd and 3rd stringers in the whole game, NEVER have you heard someone so derisively torn into than my poor dad, sandwiched on the couch between me and my brother Chris. Not just verbal either, poor ’ol guy. You can see where the TMVT moniker comes from. :-)

I have you back. Where I believe you can root for any team no matter where you come from. You move you NEVER change teams. :)

my family

my dad grew up in baden, pa (went to ambridge area hs and carnegie mellon u), and my mom grew up in mt. lebanon, pa. they moved to california in 1984 and i was born three years later. my first sport was baseball, so i became an a’s fan. when i started following football, i remember watching the niners because we never got any steeler games, and who wants to be a raiders fan? it was a treat when the steelers would be on tv, and i was screamed at by raider fans when the steelers came to town. i went to the game when the steelers were out here when i was like 13, and just did not hear the end of it. my first steeler memory is, sadly, neil o’donnell in the super bowl. i was hooked ever since, for some reason. ;)

ooh, that’s a rough first memory. Actually, that’s my first real distinct memory as well, although I do know that I had watched my fair share of Steelers games prior. I just have a terrible memory. I remember our little party that we had all gathered around a 17"-ish TV where you could barely make out the score or the players. Good times.

I grew up in the great metropolis of Erie where there are tons of Browns and Steelers fans but the local stations play the Bills (or at least they used to… do they still own that market?). My family was half Browns half Steelers fans, and I am extremely thankful that I got to be on the Steelers side of things. Christmas Eve 2005 was a great day. We moved to the North Hills area of Pittsburgh when I was 9 I think, and that just solidified my love for all things Pittsburgh. I’m looking forward to eventually going back, but right now I’m temporarily in TX for a few years.

Mysterious beginings...

I was born in the early seventies in South Carolina… I’m not sure exactly when I became a Steelers fan, but my earliest memories are of seeing the Steel Curtain and Terry Bradshaw on the few games they were televised on TV – probably the playoffs/SBs then. Just like SteelBuckeye I loved Joe Green’s Coke comercial – “Hey Kid!” I had a Bradshaw ’signature line" football when I was a kid, and got to visit the Burgh once and touch Three Rivers (not during a game unfortunately) that was during the 50 seasons celebrations. Some of my favorite memories of games back then were against the Raiders – rough as they come.

I’m back home in SC now, and cleaning out my Dad’s house of a lot of old stuff the other day I found a pair of gold corduroy pants with a Steelers patch sewn on the back – I tried them on my two year old boy (who’s a brute) and my three year old daughter (who’s dainty) and they can both fit into them. Dad (who followed the Redskins sort of as they were on radio and then TV when he was growing up) doesn’t remember where that came from or when the patch got sewn on, but there was an early start from somewhere – I guess it was meant to be.

Growing up I was always geting pressure from friends and family to switch allegiances – I even was given a hideous Dolphins jacket one Christmas by some relatives (in the trash!). People don’t understand why a guy from SC gets to be a Steelers fan. I say the are the best and we had no home team then. I wasn’t going to pull for Atlanta or Miami or Baltimore or Washington and everyone else was a Cowboys fan and obnoxious so I picked the Steelers through providence and the rest is history.

First Steelers Fan in My Family

My entire family is from Youngstown, OH, which of course to Steelers and Browns fans is like the dividing line for the Jets and the Sharks. Unfortunately, I come from a long line of Browns fans, including my uncle, who is a longtime season ticket holder, dating back to old Cleveland Stadium.

Anyhow, they tried the usual tactics of brainwashing a young kid, dressing me up in all the Browns garb, buying me Browns stuff to play with, etc. Hell, they even went as far as to buy me a jersey and had my picture taken in it.

But I had none of it. I was saying I was a Steelers fan as soon as I could really think for myself. Sure, it started off as just wanting to be different from all of them, but when I started actually getting into football, I had no temptations whatsoever to be a Browns fan. I think I got my first Steelers thing when I was 5 and Santa brought me Steelers pajamas. Since then I haven’t looked back.

brainwashed?

i dont think i was brainwashed in any way. i was born and raised in pittsburgh went to college in the middle of pennsylvania and have been a life long steeler fan. i also have been a red sox fan since i was probably around 10, back when clemens was pitching there. i know how some of you feel not being from a favorite teams state. i have to admit growing up every sunday it was church and then the steelers my brother sister and i would get our pillows and blankets and lay on the floor watching our favorite team, which that was the 80’s a pretty bad one. i got to see the sox win the world serious which for me was a thrill but when the steelers won the super bowl i cried. it is just something about being a fan and living here with all the hype each year and mostly disappointment at the end of each year that truly makes you appreciate a title. i am not saying you missed out by not living in pittsburgh for the super bowl run, but it makes it different than being a displaced fan.

I Don't Know About That

I’ve been to Pittsburgh many times, for games and for other things. I know how much that team means to that city. Besides, eastern Ohio is divided. There’s something about being from there and having to deal with Browns fans on a daily basis that makes you appreciate it in a different way from native Pittsburghers.

SB XIV

was the first game that I remember watching. I’m sure I saw some others before that, but it was first that paid attention to. I was 6, and we were watching it at a friend of my Dad’s. All of us were pulling for the Steelers (we lived in Meadville, PA, about 30 miles south of Erie), except Dad, who just liked to irritate people and see what happened. I remember wondering why they were having such a hard time in the first half, and being so happy that they pulled away in the second. I can’t say I’ve always watched every game since then, or even wanted to, during some of the down years. But, the Steelers have been the team I’ve identified with since I was 6 years old. I also remember reading about the SBs and the Immaculate Reception. It just seemed almost like a fairy tale story how the Steelers went from the worst team in the first 40 years of the NFL to the greatest dynasty in NFL history. The Immaculate Reception just added to the lore.
