Offensive Line Makeup after Simmons goes down

So now that Simmons is gone for the year (as most on this board have wanted, albeit not to injury), what is now the starting line up for the Offensive line?

Do they make the safe move and go with Stapleton at Right Guard or do they go for broke and as many here have suggested go with Starks at Right Tackle and move Colon to Right Guard?

So from left to right

Smith, Kemo, Hartwig, Colon, Starks !!! Man, for some reason, I think that would be a kick ass line. Thoughts?

Honestly I like stapleton getting in there. Maybe starks/colon would be a mild upgrade this season, but I like stapleton because that’s looking towards the future. Lets see what we have in him because Starks is gone at the end of this season.

Ween stapleton into a full-time starting guard and then maybe get him some action at center in the future. Smart move, I like it.

The temptation is to rejoice that the banes of our existence last year (Simmons and Mahan) are gone, but that really does give us depth problems. I’ve said elsewhere that we don’t have a great starting 5, but we have a solid top 8. Well, after the Mahan trade and the Simmons injury, we now have a solid top 6 and no backups on the interior. We need to find some quality backups from somewhere, and preferably not by trading draft picks.

Considering Colon’s poor start to the season, I would be fine with bringing in Starks and seeing what Colon can do in Simmons’ place over the bye week. I think you keep Stapleton in there for this week and see how he holds up against Henderson and co.

Trai Essex

I’ve actually seen it several places that Trai Essex is the front runner to start in Simmon’s place. He was inactive last night so he wasn’t an option, but he’s got more experience and his forte is pass blocking.

yea

Ive seen that all over as well. I thought Stapleton played well while he was in last night, but well see.

I think that’s probably just speculation, but it may turn out to be true. Essex may be more athletic, but I’d rather not see Sean Mahan syndrome if we can avoid it.

Both starting guards from last season gone..

…to be replaced by an undrafted free agent and a 6th round draft pick. With a waiver wire pickup center and a second year left tackle who was a mid round pick and rated much lower than that. Across from an aging and injury prone right tackle who is one good knock from retirement. Coached by a senior citizen porn surfer.

and yet

that line gave up no sacks in the 2nd half to the best defense in the league.

by TheMostViolentTeam on Sep 30, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lucky for them

It means they have only given 20 sacks so far this season. Keep up the good work. Steelers offense is in the top 30 of the league. Barely.

Thanks for the commentary, this is very useful. In other news, the sky is blue.

From the Trib-Rev:
Tomlin said Darnell Stapleton, who filled in for Simmons Monday night, and Trai Essex will compete for the starting job at right guard.

Tomlin said the team has not ruled out giving starting right tackle Willie Colon a look at right guard but added that Stapleton or Essex is the short-term solution for now.

Sounds like they’ll give Colon a serious look at guard over the bye week. I’m hoping they stick with Stapleton, but we’ll see if that’s really the best option.

There is a God!!!!!

That is amazingly awesome — please let Colon win out.

Let’s hope it’s better than the other “competitions” we’ve had recently.

agreed

but let’s remember, while everyone THINKS Colon is a better fit at guard, maybe there is a reason he hasn’t been moved there. maybe he doesn’t have the athleticism to pull & block like our guards, maybe he is bad at targeting blocks downfield when moving. again, i agree he seems he should be a more natural fit there, but lets not hope for him to win just because we think he would be better there. just let the best player win. my money is on Stapleton for now, he looked solid.

I think we will

May be it is just me. After listening to Tomlin’s news conference and his quotes, I am hearing some frustration in his coach speak, and not just with the players. I think he is finally fed up with his offensive and o-line coaches. They haven’t fix the o-line or offensive woes, and he is going to start getting more involved not just letting them coach and wait see.

The 1st sign letting Ben argue his point to go no huddle, and now this quote about giving Colon a look at guard. We all know Z never gave Starks a chance at tackle for what ever reason. I don’t think he will have a choice this time.

I think they have Ed McMahon send out letters...

to the line guys saying, “you may have already won…”

Seriously hope Colon move over.

Robert Ethan

…is a troll. Dude, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I can respect that, but if you are so negative in you thoughts on the Steelers, why do you even call yourself a Steelers fan! It’d be one thing if your retarded posts made any sense, but they dont. Which leaves me with the opinion that you are a troll or just plain stupid!
Go root for another squad!

RE just happens to dissent with just about everyone here. He annoys me to no end, but it is nice to have another view. Being the biggest pessimist in the world does not equate to being a troll.

He has just as much a right to be a steelers fan as any of us. If he’s a fan while at the same time hating the owners, coaches, and 95% of the players, that’s dedication.

in another thread

he said that “once again the team won despite the coaching and management”…….um the management and coaching picks who plays the games so….

Go argue it with him there. :)

Telling it like it is...

There is a faint possibility that the current lineup on the O line, coached by the current position coach, under the current Offensive Co-Ordinator, turns out great. But looking at it objectively, it’s a disaster waiting to happen. Somehow management, in their infinite wisdom, decided that it was better to pay BIG BUCKS TO A BACKUP TACKLE, rather than spend the money on a perennial All Pro Guard.

Faneca

I dont get why we paid Starks to ride the bench either but Fanecas time was up. The Steelers are genius when it comes to letting players go once they hit the down slide of their careers. To pay a past his prime Faneca would have been stupid to me.

Myehhh....

Plaxico Burress and Joey Porter haven’t done too badly for themselves elsewhere.

by robert ethan on Oct 1, 2008 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Harrison and Holmes...

are both better than the two you mentioned. Did you happen to notice that Plax has been suspended for being an unreliable moron?

Porter could only muster 5.5 sacks last year playing opposite one of the best pass rushers in the league. Harrison had 8 playing opposite Clark “patty-cake” Haggans. One good game against NE doesn’t change the fact that Joey played his last good year in 2005.

I do miss his pre-game tirades and smack-talk though. Very entertaining.

Tober ethan’s contant bitching about everything about the team and having nothing positive about themis not a fan and is indeed grounds for Troll consideration. The term fan is short for fanatic…if youre forever the pessimist, you are not a fan of said team. It would be one thing if he really ever made sense, but he doesnt. Being negative and babbling off bs is just that,,,bullshit!
To me, he’s more troll than fan. Thats all Im saying~

Kevin Greene, Jason Gildon, Greg Llyod

Yancy Thigpen, Chad Scott, Kimo Von Olhoffen, Mark Bruner, Carnel Lake, Dan Krieder, Joel Steed, Clark Haggans, and many many more.

We get rid of them when the getting’s good, and Peezy is not a good example, he had a shitty year last year, and one good game this season does not a mistake on our part make. You’re argument is retarded. He may still be done.

Plaxico Burress was a thug-bitch. A thug bitch who wanted too much money. Steelers don’t keep thug-bitches no matter how good they are. Look at that douche bag now, he’s suspended for blowing off work for fighting with his baby’s mama.

Wayne Gandy and Rod Woodson would be about the only decent arguments that you could make (Vrable never really showed us anything). Chad Brown, maybe.

RE, I was actually thinking that everyone was being a little too hard on you until I read your last item. You really aren’t that smart are you. I can deal with someone who is dour, but not someone who is dour and dumb. That is just too much for me.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.
