Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

We said what we said...

I can't believe Tomlin started Ben just two weeks after a concussion; we all saw how he played two years ago after a concussion. Clearly, Byron Leftwich should've been given the start.

We should immediately trade Willie Parker; he's lost his big play ability and can't establish a respectable ground game.

The offensive line will never get us through a playoff game.

Woodley's hit the wall for his first year starting; hopefully he'll last longer next year, but now he's just out of gas.

Arians can't put together a decent game plan to save his life. Tomlin should be fired for having the audacity to have a better record after two years than the previous two Steelers' coaches.

I don't understand why they keep putting Holmes back on punt returns ... he's just gonna muff it and lose the special teams battle ... save him for receptions.

Where ya at RE & Beerman? I haven't heard from ya since that game against the Colts...

Agreed. But we need to give him credit for the game yesterday.

We have, but we’re back to remembering the rest of the past two seasons now.

by steelguy99 on Jan 12, 2009 4:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wait and see

I think this week buys Arians a pass. If he calls two more good games, I’m in his corner (somewhat). We love players who come through in the clutch even if they struggle during the season (read: Willie Parker). Maybe Arians is a big game coordinator.

After all, in Arians two playoff games we’ve scored 63 points. And the success of the offense seems to be linked more to a healthy FWP than anything else.

I have no ...

regrets for recommending that BL start. Who among us really, really thought that BR would come out and play that well—possibly one of his best games ever? And who was it that threw the most precise bomb of the day [besides Rivers]?

Dissing FWP and the O-Line wasn’t on my Christmas list. Nor was canning BA.

I do think that a lot of folks have set the bar too high … 19-0 is one of the statistical data points that would get thrown out as statistically insignificant.

Mike Tomlin did

And so did the Ben and the doctors. I trust them. :)

by Chicago Steeler on Jan 12, 2009 6:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The doctors, I reluctantly trust.

I do, however, trust Coach T. To evaluate the doctor’s advice, how BB says he feels and what he sees during practice with his own eyes and make the proper decision. By game time when Caoch T. was quoted as saying it was a “non-issue”, I took it as just that—a non-issue.

One of his best gaes ever?

Are you forgetting 2004, 05, and 07. He had a good game, not amazing. His rating was 98. Hes had about 30 games with a higher rating before.

by jason97673 on Jan 12, 2009 7:10 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I said ...

one of his best games ever. I don’t see the numerical rating as the be all to end all for assessing a QB’s performance. One reason—dropped balls count against the QB.

Of course, now that BL has come out and courted Da Bears in the middle of the stretch drive, well, he is dead to me.

To mop up of course.

Lefty has been a coach's dream....

He’s been ready and EXCELLENT every time CMT has called on him. Pulled the Steelers’ chestnuts out of the fire twice.

He’s been clubhouse gold. There’s been no drama. He knows his role as a backup. He’s not been lobbying to take over the number one job. Says and does all the right things.

He was a top-flight young quarterback until badly hobbled by injuries two years ago. His numbers sucked because he couldn’t move or properly plant and throw.

Now he’s back healthy again. He’s 29 years old. Somebody is gonna pay him big bucks to compete for a number one job. Teams like Da Bears are salivating over him. No way can the Steelers match the money, since they need to pay first stringers, a new offensive lineman, and a 29-year old outside linebacker from Kent State who seems to deserve a raise.

It’s not time for Lefty to go yet. I hope we only see him in mop-up duty this week, so they can rest Ben for the Super Bowl. But I’m damned happy he came our way this year, and wish him all the best in the NFC.

Seeing number 4 on the sidelines every Sunday increases my comfort zone while watching the game. I know that if Benji gets his bell rung, we’ll be okay and the sky won’t fall in. And that’s all you can ever ask from your #2 guy. Props to Lefty.

I still can't believe that we got Lefty as our backup ..

how in the world he’s not starting for another team this year I’ll never know .. he can flat out play and he’s got a live arm, that throw to Limas in the 4th quarter was a lazer ..

When you think about the bums who have started games this year at QB around the league: Culpepper; Orlavsky, Dorsey, Fiztpatrick, JaMarcus Russell (hahaha), JP Losman, Grossman, Green, etc, etc its just unbelievable we got such a quality guy ..

I remain in shock

that the O-line put together the game they did. They played lights out, after playing about as bad as an o-line can play for the better part of the past two years.

I hope that this is a sign of things to come. I hope we retain some stability and pick up some new talent. But the truth is that I remain surprised by the way that unit preformed this past week.

context

its funny how a trip to the AFC championship game puts some previous statements in a different context. but if the steelers lose sunday (please God, no) we will be hearing (and maybe saying) some of the same crap all over again.

I don't remember one comment on this site close to

“I can’t believe Tomlin started Ben just two weeks after a concussion; we all saw how he played two years ago after a concussion. Clearly, Byron Leftwich should’ve been given the start.”

No one was calling for to BL to start, just to be ready, just in case. That’s his job.

That, and dumping Holmes as our returner? Who would think that? He is dangerous in the open field. It was just a matter of time before what happened happenning. I say put him back on kickoffs, too. But, seriously, Tone, hold on to the damn rock. That’s all.

I understand exaggerating to make a point, but that’s what it is.

As for Beerman, it’s been since the Dallas game we haven’t seen him. He posted some god-awful rant in the fourth quarter when it looked like certain defeat. That was until BB took over and did what he does.

he reappeared as Nutman for a while

I don’t think so. It’s hard to emulate his writing style, or lack thereof.

I never said these things

I for one just got a FWP jersey to wear to the game. I believe in this kid.

Woodley didnt hit no wall, people just realized hes good. And now that you are allowed to perform WWF moves on Harrison, more people can block Woodley.

Always loved Holmes back there, hes the only guy with a shot to bring one back.

I would like BA to be gone next year, but I did say he could put one together in the playoffs.

I have always contested we win and lose by the Ben. If Ben makes turnovers like Sara Lee, were screwed. When he plays smart like he did Sunday we win.

by Mechem on Jan 12, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

WWF moves

seriously, opposing o-linemen are only stopping slightly short of using THE CHAIR on Harrison…

by acrollet on Jan 13, 2009 8:36 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For real

I mean we’ve seen em mud wrestle him, weve seen headlocks, weve seen the full nelson. Weve seen the double team.

Pretty much everything shy of beating him with a pillowcase full of soap bars.

Chargers

Great game by the line against the Chargers. The 8-8, and getiing lit up all year long-Chargers. Yet, I’m hopeful for this week. I say Arians can stay but we need a new Line c oach, We just dont have the line to play old school Steeler -ball against good teams (at least not so far) and our passing game struggles in the 1te, 2wr, fb, hb set. Holmes hasnt fumbled a punt all year, but whats up with our fullback and short yardage / power back returning kickoffs.

Hope Arians Is A OC God

the next 2 games and gets his big chance…to be Head Coach of any NFL franchise oustide of Pittsburgh…

Yeah,

We can even grant him permission to interview, now, right?

by Jonny B. on Jan 13, 2009 12:02 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lets not distract him. Arians can’t keep more than 1 thought in his head at any given time, and I’m being generous.
