Spinal Cord Concussion for Big Ben

According to the Post Gazette via profootballtalk.com Ben suffered a spinal cord concussion as opposed to the original concussion that was reported for the last two weeks.  This seems to make sense with the extra care they took in putting him on the stretcher.  I kind of thought there was a bit more to this story when he was being carted off in the season finale.

This was the same type of concussion that former peice of crap  QB Tommy Maddox suffered in 2002 vs Tennesee.  Dawan Landry of the Raves also had this type of concussion earlier in the season and hasn't played since and was eventually put on IR.

As I am not a doctor does anyone on this site have more information about the long term effects of a spinal cord concussion vs a run of the mill concussion?  Just doing a standard google search I can't find a ton of information on the injury so I am not sure what to think about it.

I guess Ben might not be as big of a drama queen as Keshaywn Johnson likes to think he is.

honestly, this is the first tie ive heard of "spinal cord" concussion...

while it sounds scary, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of info out there about them.

“Spinal cord injuries were classified as concussions if they met three criteria: 1) spinal trauma immediately preceded the onset of neurological deficits; 2) neurological deficits were consistent with spinal cord involvement at the level of injury; and 3) complete neurological recovery occurred within 72 hours after injury. Most cases involved young males, injured during athletics or due to falls. Concussion occurred at the two most unstable spinal regions, 16 involving the cervical spinal and three the thoracolumbar junction.”

It sounds to me like this injury

is more of a physical injury and less of a cognitive impairment as a concussion to the brain would be.

I agree, I was wondering if it was actually good news because it wouldn’t add to his streak of the other kind of concussions?

if thats what a spinal chord concussion does to a qb, you’ll have half the AFC qb’s lining up to get one.

Yeah

Also same could be said with Tommy John surgery. Jake Delhomme had that last year and this year he was throwing, for the most part, “frozen ropes” (to quote Bill Simmons). Like they gave him a bionic arm in place of his old one. I sure hope Carson Palmer doesn’t get that in the offseason. Oh wait, he’ll still have a crappy receiving corps to throw to, nevermind.

crappy receiving corps?

Make fun of the Bungles for being dumbasses all you want, but their receiving corps is amazing. Chad’s an idiot, but the man can flat out play as can Housh.

54 receptions for 563 yards and 4 touchdowns (Chad’s 2008 stats) isn’t all that great in a pass orientated offense even if they had a Harvard grad throwing the ball.

Bens play - Spinal Cord Injury

This is a very interesting development if accurate. It would help explain why Ben played OK/good in the first half and great in the second half, which is fairly normal for him if he’s having an overall good day. If he had a loss of feeling in his hand/hands as reported and diminished upper body functions, this is typical of the Spinal Cord injury from the reading I have done. Don’t want to say it was a good thing that he got hurt in this region but perhaps better in some ways than the actual melon being bruised.

The bad thing of course is actual loss of physical abilities ie: paralysis. I got hit one time after making a tackle by a big guy who fell on my head/neck as I was starting to get up. He lost his footing and just fell on me like a tree. I couldn’t move for about 2-3 minutes and just layed there face down and told everyone to get the hell away from me. After a few minutes I regained movement to my legs and arms and was able to walk off the field. It was pretty friggin’ scary I can tell you!!

I thought Ben looked really good late in the game – very decisive. No sign of concussion or the dreaded Mr Roethlisbungle. I’m sure the two weeks off helped him recover from the concussion as well as the rest of his body. Hopefully, he stays healthy and keeps rolling.

Yeah

You have to wonder how the heck he hurt himself that badly on such a soft thump to the turf. We’ve seen him take considerably worse shots I’d say.

Heck Rivers probably got one courtesy of LaMarr Woodley.
