rex ryan

i just saw NFL network saying it looks like Ryan is going to take the J-E-T-S job, I am curious to get everyones opinion on how this will effect the ratbirds next season,  also his impact on the jets defense.  and also any thoughts on who the ravens may hire to take his spot, that is going to be a big hole to fill in the staff, and a lot of high expectations to live up to there on defense.

I’m with Blitz on this one – The Ravens best chance for a title in the next few years was probably this year. Ryan is a great loss, but he’s also going to entice some assistants and free agents on that defense to come with him. And one of the FO talent guys will probably be heading to the Browns.

I doubt they can keep the Lewis/Suggs/Scott trio as a linebacking corps (My bet is that Scott heads to the Jets). There are also a few free agents in their backfield that will probably depart.

Not to mention, they won’t be under anybody’s radar next year. Teams will be ready to defend the run and the deep throw, which was pretty much what their offense was built around.

While I don’t think they’re ready to enter into a rebuilding phase or anything, I also don’t think they’ll be ready to make a deep run into the playoffs for a few years.

Agreed - Big loss

I really like what Ryan does defensively – very creative and still hard hitting. The players are A-holes in large part but Ryan uses their talents well. Hell, yesterday they were playing short handed and still played savagely and with great use of available talent.

Ryan has been at the fore-front of innovation with his unit. They play 2 down, 3 down, 4 down plus are really good at the overload blitz using different personnel groups. Remember when they had the Pats down in the 4th qtr last year? They rushed 4 guys on one side of the football – none on the other side. No one practices against that!!

I think the current Bmore team may have lost it’s window of opportunity. Some guys are going to leave and they will now lose some coaches. They can reload and be good but it may take 2-3 years before they are back in the championship game.

The first loss of more to come

This is a big loss to the b-birds, and with all those starters becoming free agents in the offseason, that defense will be broken next year. This is a little sad, i was expenting great games from this 2 next year, flacco with experience, they playing for revenge, but i don’t think the defense will be the same, without Lewis or Suggs or someone else.

This is huge

This, combined with the fact that they’ll probably won’t be able to keep their 3 top LBs (Lewis, Suggs & Scott) will hurt them. The system would still be in place, and they still have top players (Reed, Ngata), but I doubt they’ll be as strong as they were this year, especially if Ryan takes other coaches.

I guess the Ravens will show progress next year only if Flacco matures a lot faster. The D might not be as dominant for them to win with him just being a “game manager”. The parts look decent (O-line, RBs, WRs), but they can’t just count on more success just playing “don’t screw up, keep it close and we’ll get our chance” offense.
