Limas Sweed
Hey guys, this my first fanpost here and I just wanted some people's opinion on his future.
Obviously I'm not ready to call him a bust, since revievers always develope slowly, but I really have been surprised how uninvolved he's been. Late developer or not... He's still 6' 4" and 220 lbs... I know it's hard to use him when we rarely use anything more then 3 WR's sets, but still I would've loved to see him get some reps in the Cleveland game, particularly in the RED ZONE. So yeah, we'll probably be seeing more of next season, especially if Nate doesn't resign with us.
Thanks for any comments guys, and happy new years.

hard to say why he hasn't been more involved
He obviously wasn’t ready in the preseason, but it’s hard to guess now if it’s the Steelers YouthRot™ (see also McFadden, Bryant. Seriously guys, our defense is too complicated for a third year CB) that’s making Sweed sit on the bench, or if he’s still not ready. I have seen him on the field on multiple occasions, but he didn’t catch anything other than holding penalties. It’s possible that either Ben or Arians doesn’t have confidence in him – look how invisible Parker has been in the passing game, or how Cedric Wilson was treated for other examples. Also, if there’s one thing our WR’s have struggled with this year (don’t worry, there’s more than one), it’s getting off the line and open against man-press coverage. A tall, lanky, non-burner who’s too green to know how to use his hands like Sweed isn’t exactly the cure for that.
I think he has some talent and it seems like he has a really good attitude, although I’ve heard in places that he’s trying too hard to make plays. If that’s the case, he could have a pretty big year next year if he settles down. A lot will also depend on whether Washington comes back, Holmes stops sucking, and our offense becomes mildly productive. WR is one of the hardest positions to become polished at, and pre-draft scouts said he was unpolished even for a prospect, so a quiet first year isn’t really a surprise. Next year is huge for him, though. It’s also big for Bruce Davis who needed to bulk up and learn a new position as a rookie.

Sweed
I hope he develops…but my initial impression is not good.
By far, the most important attribute for a receiver is his hands. I could care less how fast they are, how big they are, all their upside potential etc…in my mind he has to be able to consistently catch the ball. This is often overlooked come draft time as we get mesmorized by the “measurables”. From what I’ve seen his hands look questionable, inconsistent at best.

his hands are good, he might be thinking about making a play after the catch because he feels he needs too to impress. he has made some above average catches and when he learns how to use his body he will be productive, not many big WRs tear the league up their first year

Well
his reps in the Browns game were not great. He is behind the curve, but that is starting to seem more normal with our picks. Well at least during the season, we really haven’t had the blow out game to give him any playing time. To be honest the starting WR’s, OL, and QB seem to have trouble knowing what to do for a full series. The Steelers have time to groom him. Hopefully he will have a big game like Nate did in the super bowl.

Actually...
Nate was totally silent in the Super Bowl. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, his first catch of his career came in the AFC Championship against Denver, and then he didn’t make another catch in the playoffs, Super Bowl included. Pretty amazing how he went from that to what he is now.

Thx Hines
I should have said playoffs as I wasn’t 100% sure which game it was. Plus side I this whole week to re-watch all those games to refresh my memory.

To be far to Sweed, a really outstanding wideout hasn’t developed from his class of yet. Jackson was certainly hot at the beginning of the year (as was Eddie Royal), but they’ve both cooled a lot down the stretch.
And, as has been pointed out already, we have a fairly inept OC, so we shouldn’t be surprised that fresh new talent isn’t being utilized to its fullest potential. One thing that I like – and this helped lead to the holding calls – is that he doesn’t give up on plays, even one’s that don’t feature him.

Sweed's more in than Flynn
If Sweed is behind the curve, I would blame that on his not being on the field more than anything. He’s not just a rookie; he’s a rookie that’s hardly ever on the field.
I do agree that Sweed should be phased in better than he has. I think that failure has a lot to do with his poor performance when he actually gets on the field. The number of holding penalties should fade with experience (don’t think about Colon or the analogy will evaporate in an instant!).
Or maybe we should give Washington a hand for showing some serious improvement this year. And don’t hang him for dropping that lob on the windy day when Cowboys WRs dropped every other pass!
Washington had better be resigned. He’ll be cheap because he’s not great, but he’s good and he’s ours, dammit!

If he’s cheap we’ll sign him for sure. I’m not positive he will be though, and he may very well come in as too much $ for a #3.

i think we're overthinking things
There are only so many footballs to go around. Nate, Hines, Santonio, Heath, 9th in the league in rushing attempts. There’s no spot for Sweed yet. I imagine Nate will be gone at the end of the year which will open up a spot for Limas.

It also has to do with the way the Steelers do business
Remember, we saw nothing out of Timmons last year. Yes he was banged up a bit but he still wasn’t going to be counted on. Even Woodley got his numbers in very little playing time. Ben wasn’t supposed to play in his first year, but was forced into action after an injury. Polamalu hardly played at all in his first year; even Hines and Faneca weren’t factors.
It’s a little frustrating since we want our high-drafted guys to come in and contribute like we see with other teams, but look at it this way, next year Sweed and Mendenhall may blossom and make us all happy, like Woodley and Timmons this year. we also get Sepulveda back. That could bode very well for us. If you just look at the two hurt guys, Sepulveda and mendenhall, it’s almost as if the Steelers get two extra draft picks next year since they weren’t a factor this year…Then there’s Sweed…

We should be rejoicing
Bottom line is, teams that NEED their draft picks to come in and produce that same year are not great teams.
We should be happy that we can afford to let our picks sit and learn a little before seeing major action. Besides, it doesnt cut down their play life expectancy as much. I’d rather them learn a little on the sideline and in practice than play 16 difficult rookie games and get beat up.

That's right, This is the Steelers.
You gotta earn your stripes. Look at Palamalu, TImmons, Woodley, Harrison. On offense, Hines Ward, FWP, and Nate Washington (who caught his first pass of his rookie year in the AFCCG, btw).
The season isn’t over, yet. We need all hands on deck. When you’re name is called, you get the job done. Period.

Keep in mind one thing.
With other teams, rookie players can come in and contribute immediately mostly because those teams aren’t like the Steelers. It may be, possibly, that a certain rookie player was a total man-among-boys in college and ready for the pros right away. But most of the time, starting rookies on teams have glaring weaknesses that can be and are exploited. A lot of other NFL teams will start said rookie because they have no better choice.
The Steelers, however, are such a perennially deep team (organization to boot), that a rookie will rarely (if ever) earn a starting spot. Look at Lawrence Timmons as an example. The Steelers are so deep that a second-year, super athletic, super fast, former 1st-rounder cannot take over the starting spot from a steady-Eddie former 4th-rounder in his 7th season in Larry Foote.
Don’t judge Limas Sweed yet (or any of the 2008 draft class) until the career is finished. Remember, Chuck Noll got a lot of flak for his selection of future HOFamer Joe Greene and also HOFamer Terry Bradshaw was despised by the Pittsburgh fan base for the first few years of his careeer. Look how that turned out. Patience is a virtue.

Give the guy a break
I mean he is a rookie, there are few rookie receivers that come into the league and shine their first year (moss, calvin johnson). Fact is as they say most receivers takes 3 years to develop. I understand our eagerness to see him on the field producing but lets give him some time to learn the offense so he can be more affective. He has all the attributes to be very effective in the NFL. Nate Washington up’d his value this season, I hope we don’t lose him he is so close to becoming a good #2 guy, hopefully holmes can be a #1. Sadly to say but Hines can’t play forever and there will come a day where he won’t be wearing #86 on sunday. So sweed can step up and challenge Nate for #2 but hopefully holmes for #1. Will we be able to keep all these guys, I dunno. But for a good example look at Timmons and Woodley our top two picks from last year, they didn’t start contributing heavily until this year. Hopefully next year Sweed and Mendenhall will have the impact on offense that Timmons and Woodley had on defense this year. Add that with a improved O-line and we should be giddy come this time next year.

thanks for posting this though.
It’s a legitimate concern. I think in Timmons case, I’m more adamant that everythings going to work out just dandy. With Sweed, I’m still hopeful, but not quite as confident that he’ll be a stud. I think he will be just fine though and worthy of a 2nd round pick, particularly when he gets stronger, which will undoubtedly lead to him feeling more confident and comfortable in his own skin out there. He just seems a bit passive and unsure as of now.

I am optemistic.
What is very confortingi s the Steelers have always done well in the draft. The scouting is always good. I cant remember the last bust we had coming out of the first or second round. So I am confedant in the teams drafting ability.

I think we need to look back a few years to Mr. Ricardo in 2004. As I recall, our #1 pick that year worked out okay though.
Looking at the draft list, I’m reminded of how awful our 3rd round and later picks can be…

Yeah
We have had issues late. I really thought Fred Gibson was gonna do great… sigh.

Yea
I’m currently reading that book published a few years back about the 2005 NFL Draft. Fred Gibson was the first player they profile, and though I have not gotten that far into the book, I went to go look up who he was drafted by. To my surprise it was us. I wished he did do well, but unfortunately it was not to be.

lol
Yeah I was really excited with him and I thought he could do some damage. Apparently not however. I think he didnt cut very well and run his routes good. He had good speed and hands were good but he just didnt get a rhythm down. I remember reading something about him having a hard time synching with the QB
