Former Steelers Knocking On The Door of Canton

Bumped. Thanks for posting. - Blitz-

*******************

I see Dermontti Dawson & Rod Woodson (..+ honorary mention for Russ Grimm) made it to the final 15 for this years Hall of Fame induction. What do you think the chances are of both of them getting in this year and joining the Steeler wing in Canton ?

From the list below I'd have Woodson as a LOCK this year, lets hope Dermontti gets his props too :

Star-divide

Cris Carter, WR: 1987-89 Eagles, 1990-2001 Vikings, 2002 Dolphins
Dermontti Dawson, C: 1988-2000 Steelers
Richard Dent, DE: 1983-1993, 1995 Bears, 1994 49ers, 1996 Colts, 1997 Eagles
Russ Grimm, G: 1981-1991 Redskins
x-Bob Hayes, WR: 1965-1974 Cowboys, 1975 49ers
x-Claude Humphrey, DE: 1968-1978 Falcons, 1979-1981 Eagles
Cortez Kennedy, DT: 1990-2000 Seahawks
Bob Kuechenberg, G: 1970-1984 Dolphins
Randall McDaniel, G: 1988-1999 Vikings, 2000-01 Buccaneers
John Randle, DT: 1990-2000 Vikings, 2001-03 Seahawks
Andre Reed, WR: 1985-1999 Bills, 2000 Redskins
Shannon Sharpe, TE: 1990-99, 2002-03 Broncos, 2000-01 Ravens
Bruce Smith, DE: 1985-1999 Bills, 2000-03 Redskins
Paul Tagliabue, commissioner: 1989-2006 National Football League
Derrick Thomas, LB: 1989-1999 Kansas City Chiefs
Ralph Wilson, team funder/owner: 1960-present Buffalo Bills

I’d think that Bruce Smith and Woodson are locks, and Sharpe and Carter have good shot at it. Dirt should be in, but who knows if he’ll ever make it. There’s a lot of deserving people on that list, though.

There's no question

About Woodson joining as a Steeler, right? I mean he did get his only ring in, sigh, Baltisuck.

we had this convo once

Forget the details, but I think players get listed for all the teams they played for. Someone I’m sure will clarify. This was actually a post where somebody was critiquing maryrose, and I ripped into him (I was very drunk hehe). If someone wants to find that, by all means. I believe it was sometime this past spring or summer. A search of hall of fame would lead u there most likely.

The jersey that goes to Canton

is the one from the team they retired from. Wasn’t that Oakland in Woodson’s case?

by JHolmes on Jan 7, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

But

Players don’t officially “go in” under or pick a specific team like they do in baseball.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Jan 7, 2009 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

I think ..

Woodson
Smith
Sharpe
Hayes (old timers committee)
Carter
Thomas

..make it in this year.

switched up ure title

Also, do u mind telling me what those ’x’s’ mean by a few of those players. Would like to include that. thanks.

It will take years for Dawson to get in

There are so many Steelers in the Hall already that it is tougher to get in. He especially won’t go in the same year as Woodson. Plus, Randall McDaniel was pretty sick and may get in before him. I think Dawson will have to wait awhile but he will get in eventually.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Jan 7, 2009 10:48 AM EST reply actions

Really?

My initial reaction was that Dawson was more likely than Woodson. It’s easy to forget how dominating he was, because he was a center, but he was feared by everyone.

Of course, if I were voting, the HoF would be filled with players from only one team…

by PaulMorel on Jan 7, 2009 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Dawson may have been better than Woodson

but fewer offensive linemen go to the Hall than secondary players even though the former unit has one more player. Couple this with the fact that McDaniel has just as strong a case for the Hall and I don’t think Dirt gets the votes. I hope I’m wrong, because he deserves it and linemen get the shaft in general.

When Woodson was playing

he was the only active player named to the NFL’s 75th anniversary greatest ever team, which shows you how good he was .. a true legend of the modern game. Dawson was named the starting centre on the all 1990’s team of the decade so he’s not chopped liver but I can’t see him going in before Rod.

by Rash92 on Jan 7, 2009 11:06 AM EST reply actions

I correct myself ..

Jerry Rice and Reggie White were also active players named on the 75th anniversary team but nevertheless, Woodson is a LOCK !! GO STEELERS ..

tough year

to get in – lots of deserving guys on there, i agree Rod will probably get it. Bruce Smith should be in. Sharpe will get in but not on his first try. John Randle probably the same as Sharpe. Would love to see Dawson go in on his first try , but he will probably get the shaft.

Dawson's first try was two years ago

This is his first try as a “finalist”, but the term “first try” generally means first year of eligibility. Not being snarky, just saying cause I was rooting for DD the last two years.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Woodson

We all know Woodson is basically having his bust made right now.

I think Sharpe and Carter make it also. dont know about the rest.

Shame Dawson keeps sitting there waiting.

My picks

If it were up to me, these would be my picks for this year’s class:

Woodson and Smith – obvious 1st ballot HOFers
Cris Carter
Dermontti Dawson
Andre Reed
Derrick Thomas
Tagliabue

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Jan 7, 2009 4:38 PM EST reply actions

For Dermontii Dawson

I’d almost give my left nut to make him 20 years younger and get his career going again.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 7, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions

just to clarify

there are 33 modern era OL in the Hall compared to 19 defensive backs. So in no way is it easier to get in as a corner than a center. Dawson has just as good a shot as Woodson getting in, he had a long career, played with just one team, made the pro bowl over 50% of the time. He will get in some day, when that is though is another matter.

by steelerark on Jan 8, 2009 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

I agree here. Its hard for DB’s to put up big numbers. Because generally when they show themselves to be good people dont throw over there way.

Im sure we’ll have a year with a soft line up and Dawson gets in.

by Mechem on Jan 8, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Why the hell...

can’t they put more people in one class? There’s getting to be a large back-up of deserving players. They should start putting in 10 per year.

Let's Go!

by jacksteel on Jan 8, 2009 5:03 PM EST reply actions

It's the "Hall of Fame"

Not the “Hall of Very Good”. Dawson is deserving and he will get in. Patience. You can’t have nine HOF players from every decade like in the ’70s!

When you have a discussion about the best centers in the era in which Dawson played, there are two names that come to mind. Bruce Mathews and Dermonti Dawson. Sure there are some others we could honorably mention, but why bother? Mathews got in last year. It’s just a mater of time before Dawson gets his due. Not all nine players from the ’70’s got in right away, either. Lynn Swann was the last to get in ’01, nineteen years after he retired. Donnie Shell is still waiting.

We should have three maybe four HOFers that played in the ‘90s. Woodson, Bettis, Dawson, and with one more SB MVP or even SB win, Ward. Let’s do it!

by Jonny B. on Jan 9, 2009 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

Also, when Woodson gets in,

that will make 10 HOF Steelers that played in the ’80s.

How many from this decade? Only Bettis and Dawson for sure, but I like the chances of some others.

by Jonny B. on Jan 9, 2009 2:37 AM EST up reply actions

Our lineage of centers....

Mansfield—→ Webster——> Dawson and I’ll even throw in Hartings. This is something to be proud of. For those of you who don’t know Ray Mansfield, he still hold the team record for most consecutive games played (182).
