Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2) @ Detroit Lions (1-3): BTSC Week Five Open Thread (2nd Half)

Not much of a surprise here in the 1st half. Like I thought would be the case, Daunte Culpepper and the Detroit offense has looked pretty good. Conversely, Big Ben and the Steelers are once again clicking on offense. If not for the costly pick-6, this game would be less interesting than it is presently at 21-13.

Protect the ball and this one's over. Another turnover or two and this one could come down to the wire.

Let's Go Steelers!

I wish it were just about protecting the ball

It depends if the D shows up, like they did in the 2nd quarter.

if the Steelers don’t keep playing at the top of their form. No time to let up now.

Exactly. I think if we can get some points on this drive we should have it.

2 score lead probably clinches game. The Lions CAN get a break and score a TD (ala Pick 6). But it would be hard for them to score twice.

Go Steelers!!!

NEVER. EVER. EASY

Jesus christ, this team is living on a razor. I want one game where we blow out 42-0 and I can actually turn to other games that are on. I want to be able to look at my phone when we are up 28-0 and not see the score is magically 21-35 in 10 minutes.

Whatever. Style points mean nothing. Good win, defense finally stepped up in the end instead of shutting down. Take heart, we are 3-2 heading home against Cleveland and……..TROY SHOULD BE BACK NEXT WEEK! That is always, always something to look forward too.

I will take the win

Seriously though, the Steelers were fortunate that it was the Lions. Even a half decent offense would have scored on that drive. If it was the Saints, Taperiots etc. the game would have gone into overtime.

Double our time of possession in the second half, the defense was out there too long, Offense has to do something.

2nd half offenses Detroit found its rhythm and we lost ours, way to go Steeler Defense stepping up at the last minute in spectacular fashion.

Culpepper looked really good today, that was vintage making plays, looked like Ben there for a bit. Maybe that knee really is 100%, if so they should let the guy play, they might win a few.

I don't know

I’m not putting the 4th quarter on the defense when the offense couldn’t buy a first down. Drive for Detroit, stop, 30 seconds later they are back out there. No defense can stop a team like that. Culpepper looked like his old self, and that’s a dang good QB. The O-Line got out of rythm and Ben missed some throws and our offense did nothing late in the game.

The defense played much better today. and I don’t think there was the dropoff we had in the other games, this time it was time of possession that hurt them.

Just my opinion, but I’m putting this 4th quarter on the offense.

Mendenhall shows a weakness

Anyone else a bit concerned that Rashard has a real weakness for try to cut when he needs to dive forward?

Every young runningback goes through a phase where they think they have the quicks to beat everyone. Some never grow out out of (Reggie Bush, Eric Metcalf) and never excel at more than 3rd down and the occasional start with a few huge runs.

A good NFL RB has to eventually accept the truth (you’re not going to consistently shake these defenders in this league) and point north. There was never anything sexy about Jerome Bettis — and gawd knows the guy could have used a little cardio — but at the end of the day you knew he was getting you good yards every down.

Right now, Rashard is trying too hard to make moves. The rule for running in the NFL as I have heard it is “make one move and then head north”.

All that said, 77 yards on 15 carries ain’t bad.

Someone needs to tell Tomlin and Arians about the 20 carries theory (great RBs need 20 carries a game to really hit their stride).
