Another sucky performance
The Lions stunk but this won't prevent the wishful thinkers from giving a thumbs-up to the black and gold. Smell the coffee folks: If the Steelers play like this against better teams, they're gonna lose.
Once again, the offense went conservative in the 3rd and 4th quarters, content to sit on a lead and not seeming to care about putting the game away. Ratliff whiffed on an easy tackle that would have prevented a key first down for the Lions. The dude needs to GO!
Mike Wallace did a Limas Sweed impression, before redeeming himself later. And Ben surrendered another pick-6, continuing the team's habit of giving easy points to crappy opponents.
One thing to take away from this game is that the Steelers still have not established an offensive identity. They continue to shift gears throughout the game--establishing the run one time and then inexplicably abandoning it. Our receivers were open all day long, but we suddenly stopped throwing the ball later in the game. The Steelers had a first down at mid-field in the 3rd quarter with an excellent chance to put the Lions away with any kind of score. But they called a long bomb which, of course, didn't work. So they ended up punting the ball back to the Lions. This is typical of the bunk play selection at critical points in games.
On the Lion's last TD, Culpepper had at least 8 seconds to throw the pass. Even when he finally threw it, no Steeler was even close to him. A win yes, but hardly a good performance.

How do I derec your posts?
Honestly, go root for another team if you think we are that bad.
Ben was fantastic today, sans 1 pass. Mendenhall once again is showing signs he is not a bust. Ward still is showing signs he has found the fountain of youth. Miller has become a force in the offense like we have not seen.
The defense, is the only thing that had a shaky game. And that was really only the one drive in the 4th. They ended the game with 3 sacks in a row, what more can you ask for, besides a pick or fumble? With Troy back the defense will regain its identity and be a monster.
You are a fool if you think we “sucked” today.

Wow
How about " We played a good football team that had nothing to lose and were giving it 150%?" I mean give Detroit some credit, they are a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM. They aren’t gonna just lie down and let us run over it. Brace yourself, we are going to be targeted all year. Teams try harder against the champs AND at home might i add. The NFL is as unpredictable as ever. Look who’s sitting atop the AFC North? Yeah the Bengals, who would have thought right? Gosh, just chill out. We played a great game. And we won. Let me repeat that WE WON.
This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

Not so fast!!
There is SOME truth to what he says..We give too many cheap TDS to inferior teams..Bengals, Lions, san diego..It seems to me that we dont have all cylinders running at the same time…Today. Mendy ran well….15 carries? WHY? we let culpepper be their leading rusher…too many missed tackles..I believe that IF we played a GOOD team, we would have lost today!! Just my opinion…hopefully, we will lay one on browns and be ready for vikings..
by nycsteelerfan on Oct 11, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If you honestly think, at this point, the Bengals are an inferior team you are incredibly stubborn or just not watching any football this year. They are a good team. 4-1, 3-0 in the division, beating the two AFCC teams from last year.
And SD, while they are an inferior defense, their offense is still elite. We were lucky to hold them to so little points and yards for as long as we did. Giving up points to either of these teams is not “cheap”. Yes it sucks to see it happen in large chunks in the 4th, but its not like these are bad offenses.
Also, Culpepper was not their lead Rusher, K Smith was. Culpepper had such a large total because of his one 32 yard run, in which Harrison was clearly held (I plan on showing screen shots of this later this week).
I agree with the missed tackles, especially on 3rd down and special teams. Those are things that need to be fixed, but are generally mental mistakes. After all, we know our boys know how to tackle. And I agree with you on Mendy’s lack of touches. It was odd to see him not get more carries. Hopefully, that is adjusted after reviewing game tapes.

On Mendy
Why don’t we run run run him? It’s like Arians isn’t ready to mix the offense. Only do things one at a time. We’ll run strong one quarter or drive and then give it up and air it out. It was a win nonetheless but I want to see a game plan like the one we put together against SD. Bruce isn’t very consistent in my eyes…. but then again they’re more often blood shot than not. Cough Cough :)

I agree with nycsteelerfan
While Billy52’s comments may have been on the harsh side, he does have some points. And since when is someone not allowed to post negative comments about the Steelers? Yes, they won and we should all be happy. Yes, any team can beat any other on any given Sunday. Yes, the 2009 Lions are better than the 2008 Lions. There’s a fine line between winning & losing, etc., etc.
The line between winning and losing for the Steelers should be a lot wider, especially against teams like the Lions. After any game, a team looks back at what they did and where they can impove – win or lose. The Steelers have much to improve upon. Have any of you out there ever played organized football? If you have, you can probably recall a few times where your coach chewed your team out after a win. You and your teammates look at each other like WTF? Later, you see the game tape, and you see where your coach was coming from. I wouldn’t doubt if MT and crew have a few harsh words for the team about a few things after this game.
While we can all give the Lions a certain degree of credit for keeping it close, we should also not overlook when the Steelers play down to lesser competition and let them hang around. That’s been happing too much this season. Sometimes it has cost the Steelers a win, sometimes they got the win and were lucky to do so.
Don’t get me wrong – I am happy the Steelers won, and I’m encouraged by the many positives they have shown. I know they will never play perfect football, nor will I ever expect them to do so. But they have been letting lesser foes hang around too close, and have let the gap get too snug late in games. So far this season, they have beaten themselves, or have let their wins nearly become losses. The Steelers definitely have some negative things to work out and there is nothing wrong with people posting those thoughts here, as long as they are fair in their assessment.
Man, this fur coat is hot!

Perhaps the foes aren’t lesser.
Perhaps this team isn’t the team from last year’s run.
Perhaps it’s a totally different year and all those incredible expectations we had aren’t the reality so much as the reality being the Steelers last year took advantage of a closing Super Bowl window by playing incredible football.
Maybe the rule changes and the way holding is being called is the difference between last years sack party and this years QB’s getting the ball off under pressure.
Maybe we have played some top QB’s and have a big old bullseye on our chest as the defending Champs.
This isn’t last year, we played at an incredible level at the end of last year, we aren’t doing it right now. We are playing teams that are good or have gotten substantially better.
The problem is people continue to operate under the assumption that we are as good or better than the awesomeness we showed last year (at the end) and that these teams should just be falling all over as we dominate them. We weren’t dominating last year, and we aren’t dominating now. We won close games in spectacular fashion, you can’t do that every week.
Turning a 1-2 start into a 3-2 record beating the Chargers and their sick offense and the Lions who gave everything they had and looked good doing it (read the stuff coming out on Culpepper, he’s not the joke he was the last two years, he’s healthy and looked like the old Dante out there).
It’s another tough season in the AFC North, the Steelers wouldn’t have it any other way, and neither would I.

And Ratliff opened up the year well but is faltering somewhat. I noticed Townsend getting put in safety a lot too. Hopefully it wont be an issue when Troy returns. I think he makes everybody look better.

I don't know, I'm pretty happy
We needed more pressure and some 4th quarter stops and we got both today. The Lions’ offense is not horrible and Culpepper played a good game that the Steelers had to overcome. The Lions utilized screen passes effectively like all teams must do to beat the Steelers. The Steelers ran and passed well for the most part. Enough to win.

I was quite pleased with the late sacks and the way the defense finished the game. Just what the doctor ordered in my opinion. No need to denigrate the opponent after the win.

I'm really worried about the lack of style points....
If the Swedish judge doesn’t give the Steelers at least a 5.8, they won’t get into the playoffs and have no chance for the Bronze Medal.
This ain’t the Olympics, Billy Boy! There ain’t no style points. Just wins. And that’s what they got again today. Kwityerbitchin! Troy’s coming back soon and everything will be fine.

we need to operate on all cylinders.
like I said earlier, special teams have hurt us this year, dropped passes and allowing INFERIOR teams to stay close! YES, the bengals are inferior! Sweed holdds on to that pass, 27-9 steelers. Do you really think that cincy would come back from that? Ravens, are overrated..san diego put 500yds of offense against them…they only scored 14pts offensive VS new England…and 1 off TD against the bengals

Homer prefers the teams that peak around playoff time....
…..and it doesn’t matter whether the wins that get them into the playoff are as ugly as Lendale White’s mama or as pretty as that hottie that Brady’s been nailing. A win is a win is a win. September and October are distant memories around Christmas time.
This Steeler team is a work in progress….the OL has been coming along but there are many, many new players – young players – on this team. Every year is a transitional year, but there are so many new faces, and some are learning the hard way. Have patience. This team has lost its most important defensive player – who will soon return – and they are still in the thick of it all.

Mmkay yeah there were a couple errors. The lack of run calling was puzzling, to open each half especially…
Ben threw a pick 6 which is bad.
But the defense allows 13 points. To a relatively talented offense mind you that put up 24 on Chicago.

Kind of interesting...
Here in Dallas, they are killing the Cowboys for there “ugly” win against the pathetic Chiefs. The Cowboys don’t know how to win when it really counts, so you can understand it. If we were the Cowboys, then indeed I would look on Sunday’s game with more concern. The Lions are better than the Chiefs however, and I know what the Steelers are, so I’m not so concerned. I also know that when Troy comes back healthy, that alot of our 4th quarter concerns will be lightened. Maybe our D won’t be quite as good as last year, but our offense, and special teams are better.
We are not the Cowboys, we can afford to win ugly.
