Whats up with the 45 minute men??

A growing concern every week is this disturbing trend of looking like super bowl champs and the best team in the NFL for 3 quarters and then the 4th quarter they look like dog crap.  The defense did a great job in getting 3 sacks to ice the game but its hard to hand out congratulations because after all it was the Detroit Lions they played.  The Lions didn't even have their starting quarterback or their top playmaker Calvin Johnson healthy today.   Had they played an NFL team today I am not sure they would have won.  This defense definitely is looking shaky.  They let Detroit of all teams control the time of possession and were nearly outgained by them. Hopefully Polamalu comes back healthy next week and they can start putting away these teams early and sealing the deal.  One thing is clear is that we are lucky to have Big Ben on the team.  The Steelers would easily be 0-5 without him right now.

So the Lions not having their rookie QB and replacing him with a one-time league MVP veteran is a big loss? Not the best argument.

What do the Steelers have to do to appease you negative nancys? Win by 15 every game? The Lions are NOT an awful team this year, and they have not really been blown out this year, sans NO.

Also, keep in mind we played on the road today. Since when have road games been “gimimes” in the NFL. We won a road game, which is huge. Troy should be back very soon and our defense will be much better.

Relax.

Its not the amount of points they win by

its not letting teams they leave for dead get new life in them. And yes Culpepper of today is a loss compared to Stafford. True he was a former MVP back in 2000. That was a completely different Culpepper. Since then injuries, age and lack of production have caused him to be cut by at least 3 different teams. If the 2009 version of Culpepper can put up numbers like this throwing to a cast off like Dennis Northcutt what will happen when they play real offenses??

by BubbyBrister6 on Oct 11, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Culpepper is still good, the reason he was having trouble getting signed had a lot to do with his agent situation and his poor attitude. He is still a good QB and not just “some guy”. IMO he is better than Stafford, a rookie.

Anyway, as I said the defense was the only thing that did not look stellar today and it is still missing its star in the secondary (and Clark was playing injured today after the shot to the head/neck he took). The pressure is finally showing up (7 sacks today) and when Troy comes back its going to lead QBs to make many more mistakes against us, specifically in the 4th. Don’t get so down on the defense, they are not horrible.

It’s kind of troubling to see the defense not being able to close out games. With or without Troy we should still play better late in games. It’s not about sacks or picks, it’s about stops. We’re not stopping people like we did last year.

On a good note the offense is a thing a beauty. Just think if Sweed was playing well. We would be THAT much better.

what about offense

I’m sorry, but the offense produced a single 1st down in the last three possessions, it’s on them. If any of these possessions result even with a three, then the game is sealed. D allowed only 14 points without Troy, definitely sub-par, but not scandalous as we make it to be.

As far as defending my points,

they are clearly written above. For normal people I will clarify and defend them but in the case of acidtrip. His feeble mind can’t comprehend football and his whole point of existence is strictly to attack others. But to amuse you and acidtrip, yes i did make the claim about having the leagues worst defense because if you look at the 4th quarter of their games you can pretty much surmise as such by looking at the point totals they have given up in that quarter these first 5 games. But if you can’t see they are lacking a killer instinct then I guess we agree to disagree.

by BubbyBrister6 on Oct 11, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the defense gave up one touchdown in the 4th quarter, out of three lions drives. when you’re up two scores and in a prevent defense, these things can happen… why not see the improvement over the past couple weeks?

by acrollet on Oct 12, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will say they did improve

during the SD game. I said that last week. But the Lions were allowed back in the game after building a 28-13 lead and they had a chance to tie. I mentioned above the defense did a good job finally closing the door with the 3 sacks at the end, but playing the Lions makes it a bit harder to look at the game as progress. The Lions shouldn’t be putting scares into teams like the Steelers. They play the Browns next week but after that it is the Vikings and Broncos. No way they can win if they play like today. I still say Pittsburgh is better than Minnesota or Denver but they can’t win if they let them up after having their foots on their necks.

We need Polamalu to win big games....

.
That’s why teams trade up in the first round, to get someone special. He makes our defense the best. When he gets back, if he’s 100%, we will be a next level team. Without him, we are a playoff team without the berries. He is Ben’s equivalent on defense – someone you have to have to be the best.

Lots of things to like

Sacks, Mendenhall looks like real deal, Wallace gets his first long TD, Santonio snatching footballs and breaking tackles, defensive stops at crunch time ….. and a WIN.

And I think if you look, Lions have held the ball longer than opponent every game this year, against good teams. They look to me like a improving team with loads of talent that has faced a pretty tough schedule. So, I’ll take the win. And I’ll bet those beat up bodies in the locker room will take the win, too.

Okay check this out. D is responsible for 13 points today. Ben is responsible for the other 7, the Lions scored. Some concerns for the D were that they struggled to get off the field on 3rd down. Thought the Lions did some nice short yardage plays that turned big because we were being a bit too agressive early…(at least from what I saw), maybe poor tackling too? Anyways, not the snuff you out D we are used to, but what do we expect when we are rotating 3 guys to make up for the absence of Troy? Anyways, lets all just relax and enjoy the W. Browns next week and hopefully Troy is back and healthy too!

I still like our chances down the stretch

Unlike last year, our offense can actually win games for us now. Somewhere down the line our defense will get its fourth quarter groove back and provide us some security.

I think people are “misremembering” that we were dominating the supposedly “best team in the AFC North” for 3 and hlf quarters until they actually started to move the ball. If not for that pick six in the third quarter, we win that game.

I’m looking forward to the Vikings in a couple of weeks. They’ll most likely be undefeated, so that will be the real test of whether we are “for real” or not.

by StoneColdSteel on Oct 11, 2009 11:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It isn't a matter

of being negative or positive. Its a matter of looking at something and trying to throw in objective observations. We could sit all day and just talk about positive aspects just for the sake of doing it, but sometimes you can’t always ignore the elephant in the room when it comes to things the Steelers aren’t doing well. Bottom line, they did win and yes that is the most important thing as far as the days events go, but looking at the big picture the lack of killer instinct that has not been seen in 2009 could come back to haunt them.

Harrison is getting all the attention. With all the double teams and help from the RB's

on James, there are one on one situations for Lamarr Woodley every snap. Nobody is doubling him at all because #92 is on the other side. Just by that alone Woodley should be having a solid season so far. That is why I bring up the Kendrell Bell analogy because Bell like Woodley started off hot and he too looked like the next great Steelers linebacker after his first 3 seasons, then his 4th he was replaced by Larry Foote and never heard of again.

After James Harrison's year last year, every offense is double and sometimes

tripling him. Lamarr Woodley has had one on one matchups pretty much every snap. With all the attention being given to Harrison, shouldn’t Woodley be putting up monster numbers?? The flash in the pan observation is in reference to his similarities to Kendrell Bell. After 3 years he looked like the next great Steelers linebacker then he was abruptly beat out by Larry Foote in his 4th and was never heard from ever again afterwards. Woodley in his first 2 looked the same but this year with all the pressure and attention on the other side, he should be flourishing not just waiting until Detroit to notch his first sack.

by BubbyBrister6 on Oct 12, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So in his 3rd game of his 3rd season you decided he was “officially a flash in the pan”?

Not, “boy he sure isn’t playing like he did last year, I hope he hasn’t peaked already”. Not “he isn’t getting as many sacks this year, he really needs to pick things up”. No, nothing like that. For you, three games into his third season, he was in your words OFFICIALLY a flash in the pan.

As long as you keep making those extreme comments when they aren’t playing the way you think they “should”, you will never be perceived on here as objective except by a few of the other “sky is falling everything is negative” people on here. You will always be perceived as a negative, over reacting douchebag.

"we blow."

This is pleasing. No offense to you personally raven, but there is an interesting dichotomy between Steelers and Ravens fans tonight. At BTSC, there are two or three chicken littles crying because they Steelers aren’t crushing their opponents, and there are 50 people to tell them to lighten up. The season’s early and there is time to improve, and we saw 7 sacks today, 3 straight to end the game. We saw the D tighten up at the end of the game, and most people are just happy for the W.

Over on the Beatdown, there are 50 people talking about how the ravens suck and have no heart and will not win the division (shocking that just two losses in a row made you guys give up that goal) and only two or three posters are trying to look at the bright side. I mean Malor is quitting for the week!

Man the NFL is crazy. The ravens were ready to buy their tickets to Miami after going 3-0! The shift happens so fast. I cannot wait for the Queen City fans to get their ride on the emotional rollercoaster. Considering the rubes that bengals fans generally are, their fall will be even harder and funnier!

And just to bitch for a second, I had the league’s top two scorers on my bench today – Roddy White and Miles Austin! ahhhhh

Somewhere in the middle

I have read both posts in question and agree that both can certainly be taken as too negative and really a good many of the responses are a little on the too positive side. Now, nothing wrong with being positive but what has made this site enjoyable has been intelligent conversations about what we do well and what we need to improve upon. The offense has shown great improvement in virtually every aspect and is primed to be one of the best in the league this year. The defense has looked great at times and at others has looked a bit lost. Troy coming back should be a huge help and should give a clearer view of where we sit defensively. We are 3-2 and that is about how we have played, just good enough to win and just bad enough to lose if the other team does something good. At some point we will have to start playing better and I think we will(12-4 to 11-5 is still realistic). The W is always the most important thing but it would be nice to be up by more than 1 score with 4 minutes left and the ball in the hands of the opposition. I would think next week would be that time.

Detroit is better than a lot of people thought. I had watched them play their two games prior to this one, and I thought we’d have some problems but still win. The same went for Cincy, who I picked as the sleeper team in the division before the season.

This is the problem with hype and expectations.

When we stop thinking teams are “gimme’s” or “hidden bye weeks” and realize this is the NF freaking L and that every game is supposed to be tough, and even poor teams have talent on them that can play this game at a high level and sometimes even challenge a good team, we’ll all take the wins for what they are… wins.

There is plenty the team can work on, but SURPRISE!, they’re human, and not perfect! We’re coming together and starting to fire on all cylinder’s a bit more thane we were 3 weeks ago… it’s called progress (Don’t worry, progress is a good thing). And until the number cruncher’s tell us there is no way to make the playoff’s, the ultimate goal is still in sight. It’s a long season of ups and downs. What matters is getting better and getting W’s. We’re putting those two together right now.

And by the way, in late games, this D has a history of allowing “garbage time” scores. We didn’t last year, because all things clicked, but two years ago it seems we allowed a TD or a field goal late in almost every game we led. That doesn’t mean it’s excusable now anymore then it was then, but it’s nothing too new, and it’s something worth working on, because it can clearly bite you in the arse if you give it the chance.

Where has the frustration come from?

I can’t say as I have read every post here but I have read most of them. I think the largest amount of frustration has not been because we aren’t winning by 50 every week or even that we aren’t as dominant as we should be. It has been more to do with making unforced errors that have either caused us to lose or win a little less comfortably than we probably should have based on that games overall performance. Those same questions or frustrations are being eccoed by the players themselves. I certainly don’t buy into the we suck or we’re the worst hype but I also don’t think it is a bad thing that areas of struggle be discussed. Judging by the responses to “is the Detroit game a gimme” I think it is fairly evident most on here are well aware that there are no gimme games in the NFL. I can understand why many get upset at the overly dramatic posts but too many of them go to the other extreme and try to make the Detroit game sound like a blowout against a playoff caliber team, which by even the wildest stretch of imagination it most certainly was not. I think this team is still gelling and will get much better over the course of the season. We have traditionally been a little slow out of the gate and for the most part have peaked when we are supposed to, playoff time. The most important thing is that the team and coaches seem to recognize that there are problem areas that need to be addressed. I have faith they will address them. WIth that they will improve and make a strong run at the playoffs.

Are you agreeing or disagreeing?

I may have misinterpreted you, but I think you’re reiterating my point as a response. If I am wrong, I apologize. I did not direct my post at anyone in particular. I feel this is what happens when someone believes we are better than we are, which some do.

Every time we win, we didn’t win well enough. Everytime we lose, we either gave it away, or beat ourselves. Neither is true, in my opinion. That’s all I meant. We don’t have to win pretty, or going away, or prove any trivial point to anyone… Just win baby. (Never thought I could agree with Al Davis, but…)

for the most part

I think we are saying the same thing for the most part. My response was not a " I disagree with you" as much as it was a here is where I think the frustration we are seeing is coming from. I think it is fine to post about strength and weaknesses of the team. Take the Detroit game, any win is a great win. That said, there are some areas we need to work on if we expect future success against stronger teams. I think statements like that are fine if they are followed up by valid points. Saying we are the worst or man we whooped Detroit and just dominated them are both annoying because they have no basis or validity. I hope that answers your question more than it confusing things more.

No, we're clear...

And I hope I didn’t come across like I was angry at all. I wasn’t, even if we did disagree. I thought we were on the same page, but as I read on I kept saying “wait, that’s what I meant” and wondered if I was mistaken.

Kudos NYSF4 & Darin

I agree with both of you. We need to realize we have things to work on, NOT dwell on them. The main goal is the W. It does amaze me that the negative nancy, the sky is falling, posts get the most traffic. I usually read them myself just to make sure there are more people that feel the way I do. Now that I think about it that is probably why there is more traffic on them, the rational people telling them to chill. duh.

Being a Pirates fan I have to deal with negativity for 6 months out of the year. I come on this site to get away from that and talk about our WINNING football team. For the most part everyone who contributes to this site has SOMETHING positive to say in an intelligent civil way. To those of you ( you know who you are) who only want to be negative(you don’t have to be all sunshine and roses but you could throw a positive thought in now and again) thePBC(Pittsburgh Baseball Club) blog is looking for a few more members. Yinz will fit right in.

Another reason why

the Steelers didn’t let up garbage points last year is that they were constantly coming from behind! So last year, the Steelers had to come from behind and win but this year they are out front every game, somehow they are worse than last year?!?!

Also – just checked some statistical rankings over at NFLdotcom and it turns out our D is #5 and our O is #7. Quick, someone tell me last time THAT has happened. And HOLY CRAP that is without the QB of the D.

The sky is falling indeed.

The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

I agree with Darin S

While it’s great most contributors to BTSC are keeping it positive, there is too much backlash against anyone who chooses to post a more critical point of view. Granted, Bubby & Billy may have been heavy on the negative criticisim, but they do have some legitimate points. Many of the local Pgh area TV, radio, and newspaper reporters are making the same observations regarding the Steelers less than ideal play calling and execution. They just aren’t as harsh as some posters here on BTSC (except for Mark Madden, but that’s what he’s all about). Hell, even some of the Steelers players are being critical of their own play – Big Ben and Silverback for example.

Regardless of how good a win or how bad a loss, any football team is going to review the game tape and look at all the ways they need to improve. While the Lions game was a win for the Steelers, and we can all be happy about it, it is also O.K. to say that the Steelers made enough mistakes against a lesser team to raise some concerns. If you are a ‘glass-half-empty’ type, just be fair and objective when pointing out the negatives. If you are a ‘glass-half-full type’ you have to be more tolerant of those who choose to point out the negatives, even if it’s after a win.

Pointing out negatives is fine. Always being negative is really annoying.
