BTSC's Top Five, Bottom Five Through Week 5 Of 2009 NFL Season
Bear with me as I find some time to write about the Lions game. For now though, a look at my top and bottom five teams in the NFL through the first five weeks. There's of course a Monday night game to be played between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins, but as you'll see, I have neither of them in either the top of bottom five of my rankings.
The Top Five
-
Indianapolis Colts (5-0)
-
New York Giants (5-0)
-
New Orleans Saints (4-0)
-
Philadelphia Eagles (4-1)
- Minnesota Vikings (5-0)
The Bottom Five
-
St. Louis Rams (0-5)
-
Buffalo Bills (1-4)
-
Detroit Lions (1-4)
-
Kansas City Chiefs (0-5)
- Oakland Raiders (1-4)

Bucs dont make bottom five?
Pardon me but Detroit and Cleveland have both outplayed the Buc’s thusfar…
The Bucs are 0-5
yeah
well, we all might have things a bit differently. I did actually just change out St. Louis for Cleveland. Not sure why I overlooked them. I do think the Bucs could be placed in there too obviously. But I’ve just been soooo unimpressed with Buffalo.

Not that I'm making excuses for Buffalo
But they have the most inexperienced line in the league and their offensive produciton reflects that — what was that yesterday, 10 penalties by the o-line alone? thats two per starter – or half of willie colon’s seasonal average.
that and they are missing Poszluzny their “james farrior” if you will (i know he’s no farrior). He was the brains of the D, and he didnt even play a full half before breaking his arm in game 1. Combine that with FS Donte Whitner’s injury and you’ve eliminated two of their best defensive playmakers from the roster. Of course they’re bad, but St. Louis and Tampa are far worse.

Ya Buffalo has really had a string of bad breaks in terms of injuries the past two seasons on the defensive side of the ball.

i'd keep st louis last..
but i’d replace detroit with tampa and have oakland a VERY close second.
I'll BEAR with you, Blitz....
But it’s a little cold out today, so I’d prefer to keep my clothes on.
By the way, the bottom five bears a pretty strong resemblance to the Washington Redskins schedule….Every team they have played this year has been winless going into their game. And the last four teams they played were 2-17 going into yesterday, with the two wins against the Skins. They may actually be the worst team in the NFL, because they are spiraling completely out of control.

oh i thought they were fifth from last.
im still stickin with what i said before
I think I am gonna kill the person in my next cubicle...
….if the Steelers “play to the opponent’s level” against the Raiders later this season.
1. Home game.
2. 1 pm start time for the west coast team.
3. Raiders stink.
No excuse for keeping the game close. I am losing precious years of my life here.
Top 5-
1. Colts- Payton Manning has this team humming…
2. Saints- Blitz’s man crush looks stellar again this season and they now have a defense.
3. N.Y. Giants- They look good in all areas
4. Vikings- They have the pieces if they can stay healthy
5. Steelers- Cause I can
Bottom 5-
28. Redskins- This franchise is in a state of turmoil
29. Buccaneers- Not good in any area
30. Browns- The win against the Bills doesn’t mean much.
31. Raiders- Quarterback play is dragging this team down quickly.
32. Rams- Horrid, Horrid team everywhere besides a few pieces.

go to the bookie
I always prefer looking at what the bookie thinks, rather than looking at all the power-ranking, which are usually based on momentum and feeling rather than analysis. I’ll always take the words of somebody who is supposed to make money with what he’s saying over writers who look for headlines.
Here’s what I found in one site. Outright odds – Super Bowl XLIV:
Giants 6/1
Saints 7/1
Colts 15/2
Pats 8/1
Vikings 9/1
Ravens, Steelers 12/1
Eagles 14/1
Broncos 16/1
Chargers 18/1
Bears 20/1
Jets 22/1
Falcons, Bengals 25/1
Packers 28/1
Cowboys 28/1
49ers 33/1
Cards 40/1
Seahawks, Texans 66/1
Jags 80/1
Titans, Dolphins 100/1
Redskins 125/1
Panthers 200/1
Bills 300/1
Bucs, Lions, Browns, Chiefs 500/1
Raiders, Rams 750/1
So, Blitz is actually dead-on with his rankings, with the exception of Eagles that needs to be replaced by Pats, and Bills to be replaced by Bucs and/or Browns.
Also it is interesting to see that the 4-1 Bengals are rated below the Steelers and Ravens, despite having an easy schedule, and almost guaranteeing a winning season. Another thing that supports it is the odds for winning AFC North:
Steelers, Ravens 13/8
Bengals 9/5
Browns 250/1
So all in all, according to the bookie, Steelers are tied in for 6th most likely team to win SB XLIV, and the favorites Giants are only twice as likely as the Steelers to win it. Not too shabby for the Steelers that were 1-2 up until two weeks ago.
the bookie(or ods of winning basically) is designed not just based on this years play but also last years. They take into account a lot of factors, coaching staff, schedule, location(even location-chances of winning from west coast is lower than east), talent on team, record, margin of victory, offensive yardage, as well as defensive play. one of the important factors is last years play.
we won the superbowl so it plays a really big factor. which is why the odds from the beginning of the season(where the pats were leading and steelers were second place) to the middle of the season to the end of the season are usually different.
the only team I see consistently staying on top are the giants and pats. unless the steelers beat the vikings, bengals, and ravens(twice) or lose marginally we wont be up in the rankings…and i’ll be confident in saying that we wont make it to the superbowl.
.02cents
Obviously, the odds reflect the probability of events in the eyes of the oddsmaker, given all the information at hand at that moment. Clearly these change as we go along. But we can derive something from it nonetheless: At this moment, all things considered, objectively, Steelers are the sixth most likely team to win SB in NFL. I find it to be a more valuable information then all the speculative power-rankings together.
Also, quite frankly, at this point, a loss to Vikes is far from the end of the world. I think it’s sufficient to win our remaining 5 division games for us to make the playoffs (a daunting task in itself), and from there, it’s anybody’s game.
does this mean we should be scared that we almost lost to a bottom 5 team?
i mean i know there were miscues and no polamalu but they played WITHOUT CJ….soooo….what this says is that against manning we’d lose? against the giants we’d lose? thats a scary thought…if we make it to the playoffs(and thats a big if unless the bengals implode or the ravens keep losing), if we make it to the playoffs and win games like we just did then we should be really really concerned.
i would have loved to see our offense play more but more importantly i really wish our defense actually played at all… we’re giving up a lot of points and yards and while if you look at stats we’re in the thick of things defensively it doesnt show the whole picture…we’re playing middle of the road to bottom 10 defense against really bad to mediocre(bengals and bears are not winnign superbowls this year guys) teams..
no not really
because the line between being really good and really crappy in this league is pretty darn small.

Love having more of the bottom 5 teams than the top 5 teams
on the schedule this year.
Wish the Steelers would play like it though.
Sensible picks, all
I can’t dispute any of your picks for Top- or Bottom-5. The Lions certainly belong in the basement and you’re right not to get on the Bengal bandwagon so soon.
Wait! The Raiders, bottom 5?
Are you kidding? They’re easily the best high school team in Northern CA!!

I was thinking best D-II team in CA
"Polamalu’s lineage can be traced through several roots. Chuck Norris mated with an Amazon Queen, and on the other side, Tony Hawk mated with Mother Nature. The two children of these spawned and fused in a tantric love session to create Troy Polamalu. The mother however died as he tore through the birth canal with a spin move."

Raiders could be an all-time bad team
Have any of you watched this train wreck? I mean what the hell kind of football is this bunch of retards playing. Front office down to special teams, this is a mess.

at the half yesterday, Jamarcus Russell had completed 4 of 9 passes, and that actually RAISED his completion % for the season!!!

But...but...Where are the Titans??
There is more turmoil here in Nashville than you can imagine. Fisher “standing by his man” Collins and VY chasing butterflies on the sideline while the game is being played listening to his ipod…. The fans (damn Towel haters that they are) wearing bags over their head to the games… geez this place looks worse on the 0-5 Monday than Cleveland did the day they moved the Brownies to Baltimore! Can you say…“IMPLODE”
Wait a minute...
I’ve been reading over the posts on this site and all I can think is one thing:
How are the Steelers not the best and the worst team in the league right now?
I mean, that’s what I’ve taken from what I’ve read so…
Well
Best team on the first quater; Plus 32 in points for best in the league, Defense is great they have only accepted 6 points and the offense is on fire with 38 points and controling TP
Worst team in the league on the fourth quarter; minus 45 in points for worst in the league. The defense is dead last in points with 55,
So you are correct we are a top 5 and bottom 5 team.
