Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Mike Tomlin just stated in his press conference that Aaron Smith has a potentially serious shoulder injury that is being evaluated. Tomlin also stated that Ziggy Hood will not be the complete replacement for Smith and that Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason will contribute in his possible absence. BTSC will keep you updated with any more news on the injury as it becomes available.

looks like

ziggy is going to have to grow up quicker than expected, hopefully he can give an extra element that travis and nick can’t so they all may combine into the one force that was aaron smith

Tomlin said in now way is Ziggy a replacement for Aaron Smith. He said Ziggy is not done cooking in the oven.

I must not have conveyed my thoughts correctly, hopefully travis + nick + ziggy = aaron, feel me?

haha…no I knew what you were saying…I just wanted to throw in Tomlin’s new Tomlinism….“He’s not done cooking in the Oven”

Damn

2007 all over again. Troy and Aaron injured, Ben is having a great year……….

by Han on Oct 13, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

This year is a little better

Tomlin has time to rest Polamalu and get him 100% healthy. Also, Aaron Smith may be back before the end of the season. If both guys are healthy by the end of the regular season there shouldn’t be a problem.

Also, Aaron Smith may be back before the end of the season.

That’s nice to know.

by Han on Oct 13, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

May...

Just means its not ruled out. I am not privvy to any inside info about this injury.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Oct 13, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

at least Troy is about to come back, I don’t want to see our D missing both at the same time………

FYI, MT said "potentially"

potentially I could have a million bucks too. Let’s hope its nothing.

Tough news.

Smith is a big deal for this team. When he went down in 2007 – we lost 4 of 5 – with our only victory being against the Rams. Although it’s a small sample size, we have done much better when Troy and Hampton have gone down in the past. We can only hope that despite Tomlin’s cautions that Ziggy starts cooking real quick and doesn’t get burned or fried. One thing is for sure, the heat has been turned way up on him.

this is not at all like 2007....

this is not at all like 2007. we lost a lot of games in 07 for several reasons…polamalus injury in 07 was far more serious than this year…
our schedule was harder last year
our offense was nowhere nearly as good as this year only Ben’s numbers were decent.

and to top it off…2007 was the reason why we got SO MANY DEFENSIVE LINEMEN…kirshcke, hood, eason etc. everytime i’ve seen those 2 vets play i’ve felt like they did a really good job. aaron smith never goes into coverage, only keisel does and while its true keisel is nto as good…when his replacements played they did a good job stuffing the run and i dont see tooo much of a drop off. smith is dominant on the run and at collapsing the pocket for the pass…thing is eason and travis are decent big guys too..nothing to laugh at.

remember when hampton and keisel were out last year for significant time…same here and we did fine if I remember correctly.

i think a healthy polamalu is far more important. i mean faaaaaaaaar more important. so thats key. if he can play well next week onwards and doesnt get any serious injuries then we’ll be fine.

hell im ok with smith sitting out the entire regular season unless we’re in critical situations(i.e. need to win a game just to make playoffs) smith is good…and no point getting him injuried again if we can have adequate replacements(which we have) and which we didnt in 2007.!

Go for it Ziggy!!

If Smith is out, then let the kid hone his skills under fire. He’s sure got a lot more upside than Kirshcke or Eason. What else are you gonna do with a #1 pick? Play him!

Wexell tweeted that it is a rotator cuff injury.

Out up to 3 months.

DOH!

that sounds like a trip to the IR.

Terrible!!!! And not in the good Towel kind of way!!!!!!!

by Ragnar808 on Oct 13, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

With A. Smith injury, repeat talk is out the window

If this is true, then I bet Smith goes on IR and the team will probably poach R. Harris off of Carolina’s practice squad. Regardless, without A. Smith, I think this team’s bid to repeat is done. Might as well get Hood and R. Harris the experience they’ll need going fwd to contribute next year.

Just a realist. However, l’ll still wait to hear the final word from the Steelers’ mouth. Not good news at all.

by datruth4life on Oct 13, 2009 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Not so fast!

Smith is a great player and a huge part of our run defense, but he’s only one guy. So let’s not start slitting our wrists! Smith was gonna retire in a year or two anyway, so it’s about time we started to groom his successor, don’t you think? The D has been spotty so far as it is. Getting Troy back will help with run support and I guess we’ll just need to outscore teams. Ben is just the guy to get that done.

by Billy52 on Oct 13, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, if we repeat at all this year- it will be due to offense carrying more weight

than it did last year. Would be funny, last year, we win on strength of D, this year we could win on strength of O. Now just imagine if we had last year’s D and this Year’s O…

by SteelersVT on Oct 14, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont think this is a repeat of 2007

actually i was wrong about eason and kirschke…they were there in 07 but eason was new and both apparantly have ‘become better’ from what the dline coach said.

also, i dunno about hood…gap coverage is a big issue and being athletic is no guarantee of playing nfl level. thats my issue.

still…just cuz smith is out doesnt mean we need to worry…it just means that the steelers have to work a bit harder to get to the qb and scheme better.
