Update: Steelers Sign Sonny Harris; Aaron Smith Placed On Injured Reserve
According to Jim Wexell via his twitter account the Steelers 6th round draft choice Ra'Shon "Sonny" Harris will be signed by the Steelers today. Harris is currently on the Carolina Panthers practice squad but is eligible to sign to another teams active roster at any point.
In order to make room for Harris either Aaron Smith will be placed on the Injured Reserve list or the Steelers will be forced to cut another player. Any guesses on who loses a roster spot?
UPDATE: According to Adam Schefter Sonny Harris has been signed and the Steelers have placed Aaron Smith on Injured Reserve.

good news
Can’t hurt to have another young body for the line… My guess is that we’re going to see A. Smith go on IR to add the roster spot. He’s a special player, for sure, but I don’t think drop-off from him to the Hood-Harris-Kirschke-Eason is great enough to justify losing the spot like they did for Woodson…
Other possibility – maybe it’s Blitz’s birthday, and they cut Logan? I doubt it though.

If they genuinely think Smith is looking at three months, it has to be him. The steelers are no lock to make the superbowl, which is about when A. Smith would be able to come back. We need the extra roster spot now.

one other possibility I just thought of
with DJ Johnson back and playing, they might cut Carey Davis again, at least while they decide what to do with A. Smith’s roster spot…

True enough. Also, C. Davis’s check isn’t guaranteed unlike anyone who started the season with the steelers. A lot of money potentially saved there.

I agree
It’s not like anyone was banging down Davis’s door after the Steelers cut him. Of course, you’re playing with a guy’s head a bit when you let him loose so many times, but, waive him for now, sign Sunshine then wait and see what Smith decides to do.
I can’t imagine Smith is contemplating playing through the injury. I had a shoulder injury last year and even with cortisone shots could barely perform nominal tasks. I can’t even imagine taking on 300 lb lineman with a dicked up shoulder.
In any event Step 1 – cut Davis, Step 2 – sign Harris, Step 3 – if A. Smith to IR, resign Davis (or another depth solution)
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

Why?
Why would the Steelers cut Davis? He’s been a decent player for them. If his nickname was cool like The Tank, everyone on this board would love him.

They keep Davis
I don’t think they cut him. I think he provides the leadership for Mendenhall that no other running back can fill. He’s more valuable working with Mendenhall than blocking and not eligible for the practice squad. I think Smith is going on IR :( Sad day for us and doesn’t bode well for the running game. On the bright side, we get to bring up 2 young guys. Could we see a switch to a 4-3??

In danged if you do, danged if you don't news...
It is spelled Sunny, not Sonny apparently. I could care less, but I find it funny the last time his name was brought up, we had the same thing in reverse.
Hate to see A. Smith done for the year (IR), but I think the Steelers collective hand was forced. It will be interesting to see if Sunny plays, and if so how much.

Wexell seems to spell it Sunny…but I am pretty sure it is spelled Sonny. That is how Oregon spelled it.

When the Panthers claimed Harris, he told Charlotte reporters that his nickname is "Sunny" and not "Sonny," as Pittsburgh reporters had become accustomed to using. Harris explained the name was given to him by family members when he was 3 years old because he’d incorrectly sung the words to the Isley Brothers’ song "Who’s That Lady" by singing "Ooh Sunny Baby." The family dropped "Baby" from the nickname as Harris grew older.

Well...
….I guess the best we can hope for is that Troy is back, and the pass D gets back to where it was and that the drop off on run stoppage won’t be so terrible that BB has to throw the ball a million times a game in order to have to score 35 points a game to win.
Maybe troy getting back and smith going out just completely cancels each other out, and the steelers just need to pick up the 4th quarter D to finish the teams off.
I suppose that in the 4th, if a team is down by 10 and they need to mount a huge comeback, they will have to take to the air anyway and not just be able to run….which is where troy will help out in a very very huge way.

Good news on signing Sunny Harris
I think that Travis Kirschke right now will be the starter and Ziggy Hood will get some playing time behind him.
I think that after the bye week, Ziggy Hood will be the starter
Hopefully we make the playoffs, and by that time both Ziggy and Harris will be getting plenty of playing time and both will be playing good

Good article on Sunny Harris here
http://pit.scout.com/2/909026.html
Excerpt:
Born in Pensacola, Fla., Harris grew up in Pittsburg, Ca., and chose to play collegiately at the University of Oregon. He studied behind future NFL stars Igor Olshansky and Haloti Ngata before becoming a starter his senior year, when he made 47 tackles and had 9 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.

Excerpt:
Those close to Smith believe he entered the game in Detroit on Sunday with the problem, and aggravated the injury in the second quarter. He left the game and returned several times in the third quarter, before finally leaving for good late in the quarter after Lions fullback Jerome Felton ran 8 yards on a 3rd-and-7 play.

Hood, Harris, and McLendon....
Mitchell was raving about how advanced and full of promise all of them were during the pre-season. CT is right that they’re still in the oven.
But the OL was still in the oven last year, and overcame a dreadful start to be just good enough to help win the Lombardi Trophy. And now, this year, we all admit we’re surprised at how well they’re doing.
The loss of Smith is a terrible, terrible setback. He’s our best defensive lineman. And the last time he went down, things went straight to hell. But this time, we’ve got three very promising young defensive linemen to try to stand in the breach. They’ll make mistakes. We’ll be patient. If they’re as good as Tomlin and Mitchell seem to think they are, they’ll get better week by week, and the offensive line will end up better better and much younger.
Sonny Harris may well be destined to be a Steeler. And a star. Just a hunch, folks, but I’ve felt that way since August.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

I forgot about McLendon. I had to go look it up
http://news.steelers.com/team/player/
Yep, he’s on our Practice Squad, listed as a DL. Is he a DE?
Isaac Redman is not listed there on our Practice Squad, is that because the list is not up to date?
I just counted 7 there on our Practice Squad, we are allowed 8
So I figure that the list is not up to date, and that Redman is on our Practice Squad right now.

Hate losing Smith, but Steelers could do worse than S. Harris
Guys, I’m bummed about losing A. Smith, but such is football and life. The beat must go on. The Steelers have needed to get younger on the DL for years and with Z. Hood, R. Harris on the regular squad and S. McLendon on the practice squad, I think the team has a good nucleus going forward.
None can replace A. Smith in this D, but they only thing that they have to do is their job. I think all 3 have some talent and Ziggy is the first on deck to get some real time. I am relieved that they now have R. Harris back in the system. I believe having him back definitely makes this one of the best drafts that K. Colbert has had here. Now comes the task of getting them ready to contribute, which I think between Assistant Head Coach John Mitchell and Mike Tomlin, that will happen.
Would anyone consider inserting K. Fox at ILB some in our base D to help against the run now that A. Smith is down? To me, Lawrence Timmons is no Ray Lewis against the run so far but I guess you got to leave him in there to see if he can handle starting. Just a thought, though.
And remember, even without A. Smith, the standard of expectation does not change. Can’t wait to see Tomlin spin this as a rallying point for the team.
by datruth4life on Oct 14, 2009 10:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good point on K-Fox....
He seems to be much more stout than Timmons against the run. And it’s the run defense that will have to be bolstered.

I think a platoon is what LT needs
Timmons has not shown much promise in the run game since he’s been in Pittsburgh, yet he hasn’t been making those “sideline to sideline” plays people always mention when they talk about him. (Ugh…I hate that phrase. You only need to make a play on one sideline where the ball/pass is. Give me a LB who is slow but knows where he should be and doesn’t have to run all over the place.) Maybe a platoon with Fox will preserve Timmons for those passing downs and he will be even more effecitve in coverage/pass rush.
The Falcons do this with All Star J. Abraham with the theory that he can rush the passer better if he rests on 1st down or short yardage situations. Maybe the same would work with Timmons: if he is not playing every down he could actually cover a faster guy like Antonio Gates who is playing every single down. Actually, I think Fox is every bit as good as Timmons, but that’s a whole other argument.

Shit
We have 3 defensive players that I consider superstars: Polamalu, Smith, and Harrison. We’ve now lost one for the season, while another may or may not be 100% for a while (Troy at 75% is not a pretty sight) and has the Madden Curse to deal with.
Not good, my brothers. Not good.

The Sunny Will Rise Once Again
[joke]

One bet from DaTruth for any takers ...
I bet that, before the end of this season, S. Harris will be active on gamedays ahead of Nick Eason, simply because Harris is the better player and will make more plays. Yep, both Harris and Hood will be in the six-man DL rotation before the end of the year because of performance and not injury. Just believe Harris is a little stouter against the run and a better pass rusher than Eason.
Now what that means for the overall D might not be good, but you got to get the kids ready to play now so that they won’t have stage fright later as the games get bigger, ala Limas “Can you just catch the damn ball!” Sweed.
This should also mean more time for Big Snack in the nickel, which is what LeBeau should have been doing all along. LeBeau might have to look at getting another thumper in there like K. Fox to help against the run. If the Steelers can’t stop the run, they won’t have to worry about a team trying to pass on them.

Haven't seen enough of Harris to know
But we need all the help we can get now. Harris hasn’t done squat in the NFL yet but hopefully he’ll pan out. I’d like nothing more than to see all of the Harris-boosters proven right.

M. Wallace hadn't done squat in the NFL either but ...
watching him play in the preseason vs. watching Sweed play showed me that Wallace was a better play right now as a WR than Sweed is in his second year.
I saw enough from R. Harris in the preseason to say that he brings more to the table overall than Nick Eason. Harris will be a future starter in this league while Eason is a backup who is fortunate just to be in the league.
