BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- James Harrison NFL Defensive Player Of The Week (Again) Edition

IX-Hines Ward just passed 10,000 career receiving yards a few weeks ago and is on pace for over 100 catches and 1400 yards this season.  With Hines not looking to slow down, Hall of Fame talk continues to heat up for a player who's impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers for the last 11 years boils down to much more than statistics.  Our good friend and frequent BTSC contributor Wolfpacksteelerfan has an entry breaking down Ward's playoff statistics which help to separate him statistically from some of the other receivers who have similar regular season numbers. Make sure to check out the link to see how he even compares very favorably to some of the all time greats in terms of playoff performance.

X-After a slow start James Harrison is back at it again trying to repeat as Defensive Player of the Year.  Harrison's three sack performance which included a forced fumble was enough to earn him Defensive Player of the Week honors.  Harrison has already has three forced fumbles on the season and he has 18 forced fumbles in the last three seasons according to Profootball Reference.com.

XIII-If you remember correctly some idiot here at BTSC posted a list of the top ten irreplaceable players on the Steelers roster and was widely criticized for leaving off defensive end, Aaron Smith.  The joker decided to justify it by saying that the depth of the roster is much better than it was in 2007 when the Steelers lost Smith at the end of the season.  I guess we will see who was right in the coming weeks.  Steelers fans should hope the bone-head was right.  If you haven't heard the news already Aaron Smith was placed on Injured Reserve and the Steelers signed their 6th round draft pick Ra'Shanon "Sunny" Harris to the team.

Star-divide

XIV-Sean's Rambling's just did an interview with Jim Shearer who creates and stars in the "Yinz Love 'Da Steelers" video's that I have occasionally highlighted here at BTSC.  Shearer is also the host of VH1's weekly top 20 video countdown show, and formerly worked at MTV2.  You can check out the interview with Shearer at Sean's Ramblings, and you can check out the latest edition of the quality video "Yinz Love 'Da Steelers" below.

XL-Brady Quinn has put his house up for sale but the Cleveland Browns organization and Quinn are still refuting that he will be traded before next weeks trade deadline.  Even if the Browns don't think Quinn is any good I don't see why they would want to trade him now versus the off-season.  Quinn's stock really can't get any lower right now considering he can't win the starting job against Derek Anderson.  Trades are rare in the NFL but I would be surprised if we didn't see at least one or two mid-range players traded.

XLIII-Ben Roethlisberger was on the Jay Leno's new late night talk show last night and Blog N' Gold has a recap for those who can't watch the video and below is the entire episode courtesy of NBC and Hulu.   Also the Tribune Review brings up something I was just thinking yesterday and that is Ben Roethlisberger should start being considered for NFL MVP if he can keep up the monstrous pace he is on now.

Oakland could and would trade for Brady Quinn

If Al Davis will most likely attempt that because JaMarcus Russell blows. And seeing how that when they trade for players (Randy Moss to the Pats for a fourth rounder, getting Richard Seymour for a 1st rounder) they’re morons, it wouldn’t surprise me if Oakland coughs up a second round pick for Quinn.

yea I'm not too sure of what there cap situation is

And most likely isn’t the best phrase, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he traded for Quinn, and dropped Russell. He’s that senile, though in fairness that’s not necessarily a terrible trade if the Raiders don’t give up a huge amount of players.

He won't make that trade

Quinn is more of a West Coast QB, and he already cut Garcia, who would have been a better QB for the Raiders this year.

Garcia's cut?

man I didn’t know that. I was holding out hope he would get a start soon so the Raiders could find some offensive balance and I could find some value for drafting McFadden. Dang it.

DE by committee

Any idea if Harris will be active along with the committee? Eason had been on the in-active list a few times already, so do you think Coach T let’s that ‘spot’ stay inactive? Or are we of the mind that Harris gets on the field.

Which I guess leads to the question of whom then stays in street clothes if we’re dressing all these D-linemen.

I’m really sorry to see Aaron get hurt, I thought he belonged on the Top 10 list myself, but what do I know…. I guess we’re going to get see some of these younger guys take over sooner than we thought.

Ziggy and Harris are both 6’3" 300lbs.

I’m not sure, but I think that Harris is stronger.

I think Harris has to be part of that. No point signing him as back up otherwise, could always have waited a couple of weeks. As to who sits, my guess would be a back up LB

Harris Returns!

Now all we need to do is get Redman starting and it’ll be time to start planning the parade!

But seriously it is nice to see Sonny back. I guess they don’t feel they need to get a veteran. Or no one could be acquired that would help. Either way I’m a Harris fan and it is nice to have him back.

Harris dresses in his place. No one else needs to sit that hasn’t. Hood and Eason have been playing already.

Eason has been mostly inactive

I’m guessing at least in the short term, Eason dresses and Harris is inactive.

Harris will need some practices and time to become more familiar with system in order to move past Eason and get a “Hat”.

If I remember correctly...

if you sign a player from another teams practice squad, they must be put on the active roster, so Harris would be active for game days.

I think Harris has to be on 53 man roster. Not sure he has to be active on game day.

Harris

Sucks that we lose Smith, but I believe Sonny to be a great player, and with a little time a good addition to this team. Hope whoever starts at DE can stop the run as well as Smith can.

Man, I hate to sound like a downer...

…and I really, REALLY want Sunny Harris to be good, but there seems to be a lot of hype on the board (and has been for awhile now) for a guy who was a 6th round pick, got cut, was picked up by a Panthers team in major need of D-line help and couldn’t make the active roster there. It kind of reminds me of the A.Q. Shipley/Tank Summers pre-draft hype. Sunny Harris might become a player some day (as might Shipley and Summers), but he isn’t one now. So that leaves us with an Eason/Kirschke/Ziggy Hood pu-pu platter to replace Aaron Smith. Hood looked good in pre-season but he’s still really green. Long story short, the D got significantly worse in the past 48 hours, Sunny Harris or not.

Some good points...

but Harris has some really good raw skills and with some coaching and field time could become a good addition. Thats all I was trying to point out. No real replacement for Smith and we all know it.

by BleedBlacknGold28 on Oct 14, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When you need 3 to try and replace 1...

that speaks to itself. You are absolutely correct in wanting to keep everyone’s eyes open here. Smith is not replaceable.
Personally I think that it’s been a while…Big Snack I think?….since we’ve drafted a D-lineman that we fans could get behind and get excited about. We also have noticed that our D-line has been aging with not a lot of youth in the mix. Combining those two factors, and then getting Ziggy and hearing some good reviews about Sunny…
I’m not sure I would call it hype as much as yearning for it to work out.
The other thing is keeping an upbeat – though hopefully realistic – view on this instead of all the negative garbage that’s been posted lately. CHISAP, at least you’re trying to keep perspective…..

Folks on this post are way too hopeful about the rookies/draft picks. Fact is, the only reason some of these dudes make the squad is because you can only activate 45…the last 8 are 3rd string QB, a couple of solid backups, and these youthful, crappy players who might have a chance to become a good player some time in the future. Given 2 or 3 years, the coaches know and send many back to their mommies without a pension. I probably forgot a few that got cut, but more of these guys will not see contract #2 than will:

   Will: Mendenhall, Dixon, Wallace, Hood
Probably will: Lewis, Mundy (supply and demand more than any other reason)
Probably won’t: Burnette, Sweed, Summers, Johnson, Harris
   Won’t: Shipley, Davis, Hills

and many of you posters will be blabbing about this guy is big, this guy flattened that girl, yadda, yadda, yadda. These guys don’t play because 32 teams didn’t think they were that good to begin with, and now the best franchise in football says they are not one of their best 45. I’m all for keeping several of these guys or even playing them instead of dead wood (Kirschke, Eason. Carter, Townsend) but let’s keep the excitement down until they get the PT and respond (Wallace, Mendenhall). We all love to root for the unappreciated underdog (Harrison, Parker, Legursky, Foster) to make the team or even star, but to think a sixth round, twice cut, youngster is gonna replace Aaron Smith is just plain naive.

by steelerwheeler on Oct 15, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Almost as crazy as the idea

that a career special-teamer who was cut three times by two teams could replace Joey Porter and become the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year.

I don’t think anyone’s saying that Harris will replace Smith. But Smith is going to be gone very soon, along with Hampton and Keisel, and our young guys need to get PT.

The board went overboard with Isaac Redman = Jerome Bettis, but I’m not seeing the hype that you’re railing against. We just want to see what this young can do.

by Desroko on Oct 15, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No one replaces Aaron Smith on this team; Sunny & Ziggy provide hope for the future

Steelerwheeler, the optimism for S. Harris is that this guy is a 3-4 DE prospect that the Steelers drafted in the 6th round, who surprised with his play during the preseason and actually played better Ziggy in my eyes. There was a lot of disappointment that he wasn’t kept, particularly with the Steelers needing more youth on the DL. What made that decision harder to swallow was that T. Kirschke and N. Eason were kept instead of him, players whom are backups at best in this league.

Next to a franchise QB, finding good young 3-4 DE’s that can rush the passer and stop the run are probably the hardest position to find and fill in the NFL. The Steelers might have just found two of them in one draft. How long have the Steelers been trying to find the next Aaron Smith?

So, it’s nice to have a young player back in the fold that the Steelers drafted and can now work with, develop and see if he can help this team going forward. He might end up being a bust. Or he could end up being a pretty good football player. Let’s wait and see.

"Perspective" is kind...

…to be honest, I’m ready to break open the Jack and drown my sorrows. I’d never trash this team or this franchise and I truly believe, like the Rooneys do, in taking the long view of things. The Harris addition is indeed a good thing. I’m just really bummed, that’s all. Smith is one of those essential “glue guys” we were discussing on the board a few months back. I love his motor and his attitude and his selflessness. He epitomizes why I’ve rooted for this team for over 30 years. I agree that it will be fun to see what guys like Hood and Harris can do and I think the experience they’ll gain from this will be invaluable. 91’s a big, big loss though. I maintain hope we can overcome it. At the moment, though, I’m ready for that drink…

by cliff harris is still a punk! on Oct 14, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I kind of imagine that Smith will continue to be "glue", at least team-wise

I really see him being around a lot and helping coach the young guys up, like he was doing in the pre-season. I hope he also gets to take advantage of the extra time with his family…

Question...

What’s the opinion on our offensive line against Jared Allen?

by BleedBlacknGold28 on Oct 14, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ziggy & Sunny Harris are the DL future, & the future ...

is now, if the Steelers are going to do anything this year. I expect Harris to be inactive this week, but I think it won’t be before too long before he is ahead of Nick Eason in the rotation. Some of us are so high on Harris here because I actually think he looked better than Ziggy in the preseason. He’s bigger than Ziggy, holds the point better and he has a good burst to get to the QB if he disengages from his man.

What excited me about Harris is the way he used his hands and controlled the man trying to block him. He was able to stack at the point of attack, find where the ball was going, throw his man aside and then pursue the ball. The kid looked pretty good and is only going to get better. I still need to see Ziggy hold the point, get off blocks and make tackles. I haven’t seen that yet. I think it is a good thing that Big Snack will get some more time on the field in the nickel and dime D. With this being a contract year, you know he wants to put up some numbers and wreak havoc.

Has anyone noticed that Farrior’s play has dropped off significantly these first few weeks? He’s been getting beat in coverage and hasn’t been playing on the other side of the OL as he has in previous year. Anyone think he might have lost that proverbial “step” that many players lose in their 30’s that they had earlier in their careers? If so, it might be time to get K. Fox some time in the base D. He’s definitely a thumper.

by datruth4life on Oct 15, 2009 12:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

On Farrior...

I think everyone noticed he lost 2 steps except LeBeau and Tomlin. If slow and weak isn’t bad enough, iId like to know what this veteran was doing 7 yards deep in the Cincinnati endzone? was he covering the goal post so 85 couldn’t get to his cell phone?

by steelerwheeler on Oct 15, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Farrior is also playing heavier than he was last year...

At times he played at under 230 lbs. last year. This year he’s up to where most people think he should be, the 245 lbs. range. Perhaps the loss of a step was actually hidden from plain sight last year because he played so light, making him quicker. Put the extra few pounds on and it put him where he would normally be speed wise.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Oct 15, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that may be the problem

Farriors play in that Cincy game caught my eye. on the 4th and 10 it looked like he took a bad angle and the FB got the first down. Then there was the next endzone play where he dropped so deep he couldn’t make a play. Now I’m thinking the weight has cost him some flexibility and speed. I just read a write up on Yahoo about Steve Slaton adding weight in the off season and it has hurt his speed and effectiveness. Hopefully Farrior will trim down and get some speed and flex back as the season goes on.

CB/S Roy Lewis on Seahawks practice squad; would he be an upgrade to K. Ratliff?

I saw where someone else on another board had mentioned how bad K. Ratliff has looked in coverage for us and wished that the Steelers had kept CB/S Roy Lewis instead. Don’t know if he’d be an upgrade, but at least he is there if the Steelers get an injury in the secondary.

A lot of people aren’t understanding the optimism about some of the young players on the Steelers. With some time and a chance to learn the system, players like Ziggy, S. Harris, M. Wallace, R. Foster could be very productive pros for this team in the future. And when you see them flash some of the skills that they have, you don’t want to see them develop for another franchise. The Steelers picked them (or discovered them) and need depth in those areas, so keep them and give them a chance to produce for you, not another team.

If they aren’t good enough, then get the next batch of players in. Still think K. Colbert did a pretty good job with this draft, probably his best thus far.

by datruth4life on Oct 15, 2009 4:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A team that regularly

gets high production out of undrafted and low-drafted players should get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to managing personnel low on the depth chart. Just my opinion.

Can I vent a little?

I can’t wait for this weekend – not only for Steelers/Pitt games, but I’ll be done with a hellish week of classes. I have one more tonight, an art law class taught by a transactional lawyer from a huge firm here in Pittsburgh.

She may be a very good attorney – I don’t know. But she can’t teach. Each week she assigns a huge reading list, 15+ cases plus assorted articles. That translates to over 100 pages for that class, easily. But we don’t even go over everything – we’re inevitably short on time, so we skip around. She could simply cut down on the damned reading, but instead we have to slog through it every week, knowing that we’ll go over maybe half of it.

But now she’s outdone herself – one citation leads to a case whose opinion wasn’t even published. WTF? How do we read this? Two articles give me 404 errors. One is an LAP listing of famous art theft cases – which am I supposed to read, all of them? Class is in an hour, and this bullsh** has demotivated me to the point where I have ten more cases to read. Ain’t happening. And because of stupid American Bar Association rules, I can’t really afford to take this class off tonight.

Arrrggh. Sorry for wasting everybody’s time.

Dude...

I just graduated law school last May. Let me just say that the so-called “elective” classes I took were graded WAY harder than the core classes such as evidence and ethics. So while you think you’re taking a blow off class, the result is just the opposite, you get some whack professor who gives out three A’s and a bunch of B’s. Secondly, I don’t know what it’s like at your school, but I assume that you’re at least a 2L and….you still read? For Art Law?? I only read when I knew I’d be called on or if I was generally interested. I made my own outlines, focused on the rules instead of the individual cases, and did fine. So don’t sweat it. Save the frustration for taking the bar. THAT’s stressful. I feel for you though. Good luck.

Two of my professors do that this year. They’re the only two classes I do all the reading for.
