Interesting trade deadline scenario
I just came across this scenario on Sports Illustrated.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/john_lopez/10/14/trades/index.html
• Chiefs OLB Derrick Johnson for Steelers WR Limas Sweed
One player in the doghouse for another in the doghouse? Yup.
Both Johnson and Sweed clearly are on the block. The Steelers have seen enough of Sweed and are in the market more for a defensive end than a linebacker, considering Wednesday's news that defensive end Aaron Smith is out for the year with a shoulder injury.
Sweed is still young, however, and the rebuilding Chiefs' braintrust of GM Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley know a thing or two about rehabilitating the games of wide receivers. Ultimately, Sweed could be a good fit for quarterback Matt Cassel and a team in dire need of help at receiver.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that he's not exactly sure how his club will fill the void left by Smith's injury. He called it defensive end by committee. Although Johnson is not a true run-stopping end, clearly there will be situations when an athletic pass-rusher like Johnson could help.

It's interesting
I’m not the type to bash on Limas Sweed because of all the drops. He’s only in his second year and still has a wealth of potential. But with the continual emergence of Mike Wallace it does seem like Sweed may become expendable. To this point Derrick Johnson has not lived up to his potential either but if we sat him behind James Farrior I think he could really develop into something special.

Do the cap numbers work in football like they do in basketball?
I saw that Sweed’s cap hit for 2009 is $768,000 and Johnson’s is a little over $2.2 million. I’m not sure how that effects a trade. In the NBA contracts have to be within 10% of one another to make a trade work. I know it’s different in the NFL, I’m just not sure how. The Steelers were right up against the cap when the season started and wouldn’t be able to afford the extra $1.4 million of Johnson’s contract. But maybe it doesn’t work that way in the NFL. It’s an interesting proposal if it’s feasible. I’m just not sure it can be done.

I wouldn't give up Sweed yet
He has demonstrated that he can get open almost at will. If he gets his catch rate up to even 50%, he’ll be racking up yards and touchdowns. He can’t literally drop everything, and the team that’s playing him when he finds his hands is going to have a great weapon.

Yeah, I kicked around the trading of Sweed, but I think he has far too much potential and talent to give up on just yet. Didn’t Nate go through the same thing…that guy used to drop everything and kinda still does, but eventually he got some respect. Enough to land a decent contract outside Pitt. Anyways, I think we have a great future corps or WRs, once Sweed stops letting his head get in the way. Holmes, Wallace and Sweed….that looks pretty intimidating if Sweed pans out.

Nate...

it seems like Nate drops a touchdown a week

That should be a new stat

One argument in favor of keeping Sweed...
…is that there’s a decent chance Tone will want big money when he’s up after next year. We might not be willing to pay him what he wants, and dan Snyder is always out there waiting to do something stupid. Plus, as good as Hines looks, the odds are he’ll be done in 2-3 years. We’ll need another receiver in the near future, and if we can bring Sweed along we should do it.

Couldn't agree more
There is something to be said for staying the course and looking a little further down the road.
He may end up being a big disappointment but I have a strong hunch it will be the exact opposite. The talent is there, the head isn’t. Easier to fix the head I think.

I made a loose joke about
trading Oakland for Nnamdi and Seymour. I’m sure we’d never be able to work it out, but DAMN: that’d be sweet. I’d give up Sweed, Willie Parker, and a couple draft picks.
Also- why not try AQ Shipley at LDE? He’s a strong, high-effort guy who probably not pro-level center material. Why wouldn’t that work? Especially with his knowledge of how O-lines work?
BTW- don’t bother flaming me, i’m not looking for arguments. Anybody moron enough to talk shit because i dared to think outside the box is just embarrassing himself.
/daydreaming…..

Not flaming you
There are probably some players out there who could/should change positions but I think that is awfully hard to do once the season has started as most positions are a lot more complicated than most of us realize. I have looked at different players in the past though and thought they would be a better fit in a different position. So I don’t think you are that outside the box just not once the season has started.

Didn't mean to sound too defensive
but got called “stupid” elsewhere for bringing it up, and i don’t think it’s stupid at all.
A guy like Shipley, with a high-football IQ and a great motor, and an understanding of what o-lines need to do, AND who has excellent strength and determination combined with a lower center of gravity (ie Big Snack!) seems like a potential star in the making, if he was agreeable to a switch.
I’m not sure how complicated the NT position is, but it IS the defensive opposite of Center, which AQ plays.
If he’s not likely to get on the roster on offense, why not defense?
And- i got a funny feeling that Sweed would be another Ike Taylor if he was switched to CB…but that’s another topic.
I like to toss around possibilities. Thanks for indulging me…..

I don’t think anyone called you stupid.
I re-affirmed your statement that the idea was “Silly”. The idea was silly not you.

Outside of when the Rams gave away the Bus
When have the Steelers ever traded for anybody? I know the tone there sounds antagonistic, but truthfully, I am curious. I can’t remember any other player the Steelers have acquired by trade.

I would be surprised to see a trade
year in and year out we are probably one of the least active teams as far as trades and FA. That for the most part, has served us pretty well over the years. I do think, when there are good opportunities that won’t break the bank, it would be nice to see them throw their hat in a little more often. Like Washington—LOL
by DarinS on Oct 15, 2009 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good point
but it would be ooooohhhhh ssssooooo sswwweeeettttt to trade for Richard Seymour and have him on the roster as we beat NE in the AFCCG this year, wouldn’t it?….lol
by tobiathan on Oct 15, 2009 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seymour would be great
But still think in the long run NE got the better of that deal(man I hate them) looks like a potential top pick over all for a very good player with what 9 years on him. He’s playing great right now but your trading maybe 3-4 years tops for 10-12 years and that is why Oakland is Oakland and NE is NE. As much as I hate them, have to give them credit for always coming up with deals like that.

I doubt the steeler give up on a player
Not really our style, I can see not signin someone after the contracts up (burress) but to trade the KID away while hes in a slump would be suprising
Troy edwards didnt get the ole heev ho so I doubt Limas will. although different coaches
I think Tomlins gonna make Men outta Swees and Mendenhall yet. The dudes awesome at leadership and I imagine a few years from now youll be seein Sweed jerseys all around hines field and well forget all about the ole droppsies.
altho I betcha DJ could POSS be a Farrior someday?

Maybe
I tend to agree with you but also think if the right deal came across, which is highly unlikely, T would do it if he felt it was best for the long run, I don’t see him as a knee jerk kinda guy. I don’t think there will be much movement at all but Buffalo might try to get something for TO since he is a FA after the season, at this point they would probably take a 6th round pick for him but I doubt anyone has the cap room.

don't trade limas until Santonio extends his contract
They should let Limas show his ability to get open deep when games look to be under control. Then Limas won’t feel so much pressure. If Limas makes a few big plays, then we see if we can sign Santonio to an extension in the 6 mill/year range before the draft. Then we trade Limas to move up in the draft to get a young safety. We are desperately going to need an excellent young safety-intraining.

Sweed
could possibly be the Steelers version of Jordan Staal. a guy who came in with loads of potential but just now learning consistency with the Penguins. Sweed hasn’t produced yet like Staal, but the Steelers are not giving up on Sweed yet because they like his work ethic and he is flashing his speed and ability to get open he just needs to learn how to finish. I don’t think they’ll give up on Sweed this year but Training Camp 2010 will be Sweed’s make or break year. He frustrates us with his drops and patience is wearing thin but the Steelers will want to make sure they don’t make a mistake cutting him.

number of touches
Tried to find a drop % stat but couldn’t so this is just an estimation. He has 7 career catches, even if he dropped 50%, that means he has only been thrown to 14 times, that seems like an awefully small amount to right off anyone.

I don’t understand the point of another OLB. Woodley is the clear starter, any injury Fox comes in Timmons moves to the outside.

How come everyone thinks the Cheifs are trying to ship off their star players?
I am hearing Dwayne Bowe to the Ravens for a 2nd and 5th round pick. Now Johnson for Sweed? And I am unsure if you can say Johnson is in the dog house. Ask most Chiefs fan, they will probably tell you differently.
Limp and dangling.

Hmmm
I normally don’t get into these speculations because the Steelers so rarely make any kind trade moves. Just sitting watching the nfl network though and they were talking about Kyle Vanden Bosch possibly being on the trading block. How sweet would that be to see him in black and gold. He’s a beast with a Steeler mentality.

It makes a lot more sense
than trading for a guy at a position we don’t need.
