Steelers won. Enjoy it today and tomorrow. Worry about the Vikings then. We’re 4-2. They will improve.

Actually

it was a strong performance. This is exactly how the Steelers are supposed to handle teams that they should beat. They ran the ball well for how little they attempted to run but that had more to do with Ben having a red hot hand as opposed to any difficulty with establishing the run. The defense I was impressed with today because they played by far their best game of the season. The only hiccup was the kick return but then again not every team has a Josh Cribbs and he always has a trick or two saved for the Steelers so we are not likely to see that again as our Special Teams is normally solid. Yes the fumbles were things we could have done without but I think those are things that are going to be few and far between. If this is a sign that the defense has started to settle down and play up to their usual self then this game is an encouraging sign. I don’t think any comment about Ben Roethlisberger is necessary because he is playing at such a level any superlative inserted would not do that guy any justice.

Cribbs

Without him, they have nothing. That said he is a pretty talented player and the only real weapon they have. Of course they want to trade him, they wouldn’t be the browns if they didn’t. Overall one of our most complete games of the year. As always there will be opportunities for improvement, like protecting the football. Bring on the vikes.

i can’t even remember the last time i saw an actual NFL team rely on one player so much for offensive production. I actually like cribbs, but Cleveland’s offense is just pathetic.

I like Mangini’s tactic of keeping the starting QB secret at the beginning of the year to hide that he would go with Cribbs being the starter in the WildCat by the 6th week. Money well spent by the Browns.

Agreed

Did anyone see the Vikings/Ravens game? Minnesota’s D folded at the end, and as much as I hate to say it, the Ravens were the better team today. The Ravens are more of a worry than Minnesota. All in all a great day for the Steelers with Cincy and Baltimore losing, and now we can stop the Vikings perfect record next week. Positive things happen to positive people.

Meh, Troy was pretty pedestrian. The pick was a nice play but a terrible decision by a non-QB and he let up the only TD on defense. And again, we let up a big post play in cover-2 man.

I wouldn’t say Troy is back just yet. Hopefully he’ll be back next week – if he were healthy, I’d feel pretty good about facing the Vikings.

What do you expect, perfection?

The defense gave up only 7 points for the entire game. They held the Browns to less than 200 yards of total offense. They generated three turnovers. The “big post play” was arguably the only bad mistake all day. Geez, even the Browns are not going to just go three-and-out all day. Let’s appreciate a good day by the defense (and the offense).

No, I’m just saying injured Troy << healthy Troy. I’m not really even commenting on the defense as a whole. Mechem implied that bringing Troy back fixed our problems, but I’m arguing that he didn’t because I didn’t feel he played particularly well, despite the INT.

We play to the level of our competition

We play either down or up to the competition. I’d rather have a 40 yr old QB running for his life to beat us than Adrian Peterson (AP). Ike has to cover better, the last 2 weeks he has looked horrible, the rookie was giving him the business. In addition, Mendy has to hold the rock better people will look to strip him, especially the Vikes.

The Vikes D doesn’t look that great, but the offensive line was opening holes against the hated doo doo birds…

The steelers shut down AP, which I think they are most capable of, then Favre will be forced to throw, and his recieveing core isn’t as talented as the steelers’s is, plus the fact that one of their CB’s are injured makes me want to see Big Ben tear it up even more

Not too worried about AP!

How? If you’re not worried about Adrian Peterson, the best RB in football (except for Willie Colon, if they’d just let him play RB once) I don’t really know what to say. You have a vaild point about their great pass rush, but I can’t understand dismissing AP so quickly. They should both be concerns, in my opinion.

it's what happens when you fumble the ball twice around their 30 yard line

and one of those mendelhall should’ve been whistled down for a stop of forward progress. he was lying on another player for a good second & wasn’t trying to further advance himself while another browns player had him tackled and was trying to pull out the ball. officials have whistles for a reason

Perspective

Steelers can shut down the running game — even this Steelers Defense. If AP does not go off — and by that I mean for more than 130 yards — Brett Favre will have to win the game. It is one thing to do it in the confines of the dome, and quite another thing to do it in the winds of coming off of the rivers at Heinz field.

The Vikings defense is very over-rated. Frankly, the meltdown they had against Flacco and the Ravens was very similar to the Steelers meltdown against the Chargers — the difference is that the Steelers Offense was able to pick up the pace as needed — and the Vikings were not.

On the final drive, where a TD puts things out of reach, they could only get a field goal. They are VERY lucky that Baltimore missed a very makable field goal, or they would have lost — AT HOME.

Yes the Steelers have put up some stinkers… but not at home.

The Steelers will hand the Vikings their first loss.

I’d be willing to bet you anything you care to lose…

Good point

Favre lacks the ability to play in inclement weather. He’ll be fumbling with those small hands.

by Salty on Oct 19, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt that

He played in Green Bay for the majority of his career. I think he has plenty of experience in bad weather.

If the Vikings win this game it will be because of their defense. I can tell you right now they’re going to come after BB early and often. If the OL plays a good game, we win. I say that because there won’t be a lot of rushing yards in this game by either team, so it’s gonna be on Ben and the special teams to carry us.

by StoneColdSteel on Oct 19, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can get a little cold in GB, lol

You are right in that, not sure how anyone could think he lacks the ability to play inclement weather. Allen is all about speed and tenacity, if we can handle that we should be alright. If he gets to Ben early on, look for some screens to his side. I agree that there will be a lot of passing in this game and I don’t think BB will take as long as Flacco did to heat up. After seeing the Baltimore game, though, I don’t think MN is quite as good against the run as we thought. There will be yards there, especially if we are passing well.

by DarinS on Oct 20, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah sure...

And he was a lot younger then.

He doesn’t have the arm strength he once had. And a gunslinger throwing in to the wind is leaving it to luck — it might be good luck… or might be bad luck. But, I like my chances if the game comes down to Brett having to beat the Steelers Defense and the Pittsburgh Winds…

by MarkJoel66 on Oct 20, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like our chances as well but I wouldn’t be counting on him performing poorly because the weather isn’t great. I think Ben will give them headaches and I do believe we can run on them. AP will get some yards but I don’t think he will get over 100. Their fastest reciever is out so the passing game will struggle some because of that. Tough game but I think we win.

by DarinS on Oct 20, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it depends

If Favre stays patient, you’re probably right. But if the wind is blowing against him AND he insists on trying to make some of those throws he’s been making in the dome, the ball will flutter like a shot pigeon.

It seems like Brett — for his whole career — has sort of refused to accept that he can’t make the throw when he needs to… We’ll see…

Turnovers

We have to WIN the turnover battle, can’t tie…just win that and we win the game. The only reason we are struggling to close teams out is turnovers. The 06 team had the same problem but now the offense scores enough and the D is stout enough to hide the fact that we are currently 26th in the league with a -4.

I think otherwise this team is progressing on both sides of the ball. Said it before, the Steelers are the only thing holding them back.

by Silverback92 on Oct 19, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And special teams

We are giving up good field position a lot. Logan looks pretty average back there. We are losing the special teams battle in virtually every game.

by MarkJoel66 on Oct 20, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll have to watch a little closer but I think we have been doing a very average job of blocking on KO returns, seems like Logan is having to scratch for every yard. Have you noticed an increase in fair catches on punts. Just seems to me like we haven’t had very many chances to even return punts this year.
