Jeff Reed Cited For Public Intoxication And Disorderly Conduct
Jeff Reed was cited last evening at approximately 9pm outside of a bar, McFadden's, in Pittsburgh for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. I think this will probably be the straw that breaks the camel's back in terms of Reed's chances of re-signing with the Steelers at the end of the season.

Jeff Reed is (usually) clutch, but the steelers can’t keep putting up with jokers.

commisioners office
I wonder if this can warrent a suspension from the league. The Steelers suspended Santonio for a game last year bc of a run in with the law involving marijuana. I wonder if they do the same for a second offense for a kicker involving alcohol. Considering he had a run in this off season I am sure he was warned by the NFL. my best guess will be a 1-4 game suspension serving as the perfect opportunity for the commish to make a statement to players about drinking responsibly.

If it’s a 4 game suspension, Reed might go packing. I don’t see us carrying 2 kickers.

Maybe you're right but....
I actually don’t have a problem with a kicker who gets rowdy. This is a throwback to the old days of the league. And I guess Reed has more reason than normal to celebrate because he’s been nailing his kicks lately. Lighten up, he’s just a good ol’ boy!

actually he’s just an ass.
don’t get me wrong – i feel ya. Nothing TOO wrong with going out to get some brews after the third straight W. But, to get cited for public intoxication and disorderly conduct means you’re conducting yourself like a total clown. Bothering people, calling attention to yourself…being an ass.
Bad stuff. He’s done here I’d bet after this year.

Agreed, he’s done. It’s a shame because he seemed to figure out Heinz field (Kris Brown anyone?).
He didn’t endanger anybody so it’s not that big of a deal too me. However, I prefer the Steelers having unblemished criminal records so that it’s even easier to make fun of the Bungles.

Quite frankly
I hope he is gone after this year. A reliable kicker can be tough to find but adios punk. Besides, the dude SUCKS on kickoffs. As big as that’s spaz’s legs are, why the F can he not kick the football though the endzone?
On a side note, as I’m watching Reed’s kickoffs consistantly end up at the 5 or 10 yardline, I’m wondering to myself, self, Couldn’t Sepulveda be taught to kickpoff? Further, why not see if Sputnik is any good at popping FGs?
In any event, the Steelers had a kid in camp this year whose name escapes me for the moment, but he had a better leg than Reed. If he can work on his accuracy a bit, I’m betting he’ll replace Reed. No way now that Pitt pays Reed anything higher than the offer tabled just before the season.

"It's not like he beat on his girl"...
No, because we would have cut him the first time he did that (Cedric Wilson).
“then gets caught driving with blunts”…
No, because we would have suspended him for at least one game the first time for that (Santonio vs. Giants last season).
Track records change opinions. Reed has done this before without repercussion from the team. It’s getting old.

The guy has been caught drunk doing stupid things on several occasions now, and this in the middle of a season in which we are needing his reliability in the kicking game. Makes you wonder if the night before that game where he missed the 4th quarter FG’s that cost us the game he might have been out carousing too…
No matter how good the guy can be, a problem is a problem and he needs to admit it, offer up and apology and go & get some help. Anything short of this and the Steelers need to be done with him already.

Sad
It’s fairly apparent that Reed has a drinking problem. There are now two incidents we know about since he has been in uniform and who knows how many others we don’t know about where he hasn’t gotten in trouble with the law. Instead of learning how to drink like an adult, perhaps Reed needs to quit drinking permanently. Some just aren’t able to handle their liquor. He may or may not fall into that category. If he does have a drinking problem, which he apparently does, it will just lead to bigger and bigger problems on down the road. The only sure way to avoid a repeat is to not put himself in that position again. You’re jeopardizing your career Reed. You need to wisen up and quick..

I thought the same as I have read the comments here. It’s possible that the Rooneys get him into AA or something and he sticks around. His actions sound like he’s an alcoholic and may just need to avoid any drinking at all. If he doesn’t clean himself up, I don’t see the FO offering him a new contract this offseason.

I hate those scumbags, and have absolutely no respect for them. Reed needs some help....he's not the first to travel this path....
But somebody’s gotta intervene and grab him by the collar and shake some sense into him. This is no time to be throwing his life away, and there’s nothing sadder than a drunken, alcoholic former jock. And if he doesn’t admit to his problem soon, he’s not on next year’s team. Look in the mirror, Skippy, and man up. You can handle this, but only if you want to.
As far as Speath is concerned, I’m not sure whether I’m surprised or not. Public urination is a misdemeanor. That’s never been my main worry about him. His blocking ain’t worth a shit…and that’s felonious.

Agree, looks like Reed needs AA help
I was waiting for someone to say that it looks like this guy could have a problem with alcohol and need some professional help instead of just dumping on him.
Anytime you are in a contract year and you put yourself in position to be arrested for public intoxication, that says a lot about your intelligence, or lack thereof. He may have punched his ticket out of here, but good kickers who can kick in Heinz Field aren’t a dime a dozen.
Depending on how this shakes out, I think Reed could end up hearing from Commissioner Roger Goodell on this one and I don’t think he or the Steelers will like the news.

Reed's work this season
consists of missing two FGs in a 3-pt loss and plunking kickoffs to the 10. He’s not exactly an all-star, and neither his behavior nor his play is particularly likely to improve. Send him packing and move on.
by Desroko on Oct 19, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No Problem with His Behavior
I have no problem with this minor incident. Who hasn’t been cited for disorderly conduct? I have. Our last president had a few such citations (not that he’s a particularly good example). This could simply translate to being too loud, at a time too late in the night.
But really, Reed has been inconsistent this year, and he wants a raise. If someone else comes into camp next year and kicks as well as him, then I’m fine with getting rid of him.
And I should end with the note that I have nothing but good feelings toward Reed in general. Any player who helped us win either of those rings is okay in my book.

i don’t think the “player” is in question as much as the “person” is. reed the player is a perfect fit for this team, despite having a somewhat down year thus far. its reed the person who is causing trouble, and potentially walking a thin line with the organization.
this, typically, is not the kind of behavior that the rooney’s tolerate.

Reed, Spaeth, and Tonio
All 3 are gone. Reed is declining and Spaeth never was much of a player. If Reed makes it to January I’d be surprised. That weakening leg and a cold ball will make for some high school-like kickoffs. They might low-tender Spaeth but his weak blocking skills and weak bladder will never make the top 53. Tonio has had multiple problems. The Steelers were dealt a bad hand after they drafted him. He got in trouble but they still needed to pony up a bonus and a 5 year deal. I believe there are/were minimums that the Steelers had to offer him based on his draft position. He’s been better but has still gotten into trouble since. No way he gets an extension.

I think most rational Steeler Fans hope the front office makes a strong effort to resign Tone when the time comes but doesn’t overpay. It’s not easy to find good WRs, we may be forgetting that because we hit it out of the park with Wallace, but Tone is a big part of this team’s present and future.

The U.S. gets pissed because if it weren’t for us, they’d be speaking German. But at the same time, if it weren’t for them, we’d be speaking, well, English.
Even though we repaid those cheese eating bastards for their assist, they still treat our people like terds and feel like we should still bow down to them. It doesn’t help that our GIs went on a bone fest after WWII.
More recently, France refused to allow the U.S. to fly over their arispace on a bombing run over Libya. The result was a much longer bombing run which could have easily led to pilot fatigue jeopardizing the mission.
I have no problem with the Frogs. In fact, I have a nice French rifle. Never fired, only dropped once.

i agree reed is being a clown
and this could very well help to be his ticket not to be resigned at the end of the year if he’s requesting a lot of money, but i think he’ll be resigned if he requests a reasonable about of money. i also think he won’t be suspended by the league (at least for the vikings), but could face a suspension from the steelers. (lol watch the league will hand down a suspension in a week or 2 right when i make this comment).
my reasoning is the league doesn’t usually hand down suspensions for just getting in trouble (ask vincent jackson and his drunken driving experiences…while on probation for a previous dui) but most of the times you have to be convicted by the legal system or by a league investigation and it has to be something the league is taken a hard stance on.
but let’s remember, one of our fav players has been arrested 3 times over the past 3 years. once for disorderly conduct, once for domestic violence/assault, and once for possession of marijuana.
though, reed definitely needs to be sent to AA. if you occasionally go down to the south side i’m sure you’ve seen him down there or have friends who have seen him. and most of the time he’s doing something absurd

Jeff Reed
I think the guys who imagiine he will be suspended are over reacting. This is certainly not a 4-game suspension type of behavior. And I don’t think it has anything to do with whether he will re-signed.
I will bet that 90% of the Steelers who do get drunk form time to time are very big and very loud. He probably will get some couseling and “it better not happen again.”

one complication
Reed is a team captain – might be bad for team cohesion if he was sent sailing in the middle of the season. Now, when his contract is up at the end of the year…

Who is embarrassed vs. Who should be embarrassed
If I were Jeff Reed’s father, I would be absolutely embarrassed. Here I am, chaffeuring my 30-year-old son, trying to keep him out of trouble. His friend says pull over, got to take a piss. Maybe I try to make a joke of it, not in my car you don’t.

Urinating in public
What a BS freakin’ law. I get it, laws are laws, however, which one of you has not whipped out the ole wang dang doodle to take a whiz next to a car door in a parking lot or behind a building? If I were a cop, I’d be embarrassed to ticket another dude for shakin the dew of his lily unless he was uncontrollably squirting all over cars, people or small fury woodland creatures. On top of that, it’s hypocritical. Only a cop who has NEVER done the same should EVER bother another dude who has made every effort to conceal himself while making water.
Further, why pile the tickets on top of Reed? He smelled of alcohol? Seriously? Not shit sherlock, the guy was outside a bar. I can understand the resisting arrest part but the guy wasn’t driving so he can be as freakin’ tuned up as he wants. Criminy, they could arrest the entire PARKING LOT every Sunday out there. Talk about mass public drunkeness and public urination!

I never understand how kickers don't get better
I mean, all the other positions have bigger, stronger, faster athletes.
There should be many kickers in the league that can kick touchbacks 100% of the time. And that have a 55+ range for field goals.
Instead, it is a position that allows for guys to still be kickers well into their late 30s and often 40s.

Pittsburgh Police have always been like Eric Cartman's hero...
Brian Boitano. They don’t take shit from anybody!
The fact that Skippy’s parents were there, and his set of witnesses seem to be disputing the police account really muddles the case against him.
Since Reed had an earlier legal problem, it is clearly in his interest to fight this one. Disorderly conduct charges are difficult to prove and often never go to court. It’s in everybody’s best interest to “no paper” this one, make it go away, and have the Rooneys insist that Reed gets some help in growing up. We all know how the ‘burgh works, and if Artie vouches for Skippy and says he’ll take care of it, it will get taken care of. And that keeps Eagle Scout Goodell out of it.

Yeah, I remember a story when I was living at Point Park College-
some cops just killed Jonny Gammage, a cousin of a steelers player, Ray Seals. (this was fall of ‘95) Basically, it was your typical DWB scenario, but they cops killed him while “restraining” him. All the guy did was drive a Jaguar past 11 pm. While black. Pittsburgh’s police are among the most violent and dangerous out there. Don’t mess with them.
by SteelersVT on Oct 21, 2009 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
While that may not be true of all of them
I have had some run ins with some (Pittsburgh cops) that make me say, “What just happened here?” I had a cop stop me and told me, “It looked like you were speeding.” He picked me out of a group of 5 cars and I was in the middle. Then he gave me a ticket for having an expired license even though you can have one if you produce a military ID (which I did). I was only in town for two days, by the way. I took the ticket to the State Police and the trooper just shook his head. He then called the squire and had her take care of it for me.
I have plenty more but my nephew is a cop for one of the boroughs so I cut them slack.
