How to beat Jared Allen

Jared Allen is a one-dimensional player. He has a huge ego and lives solely to rush the QB. He's very good at it, but he stinks at stopping the run. Except on obvious running downs, he goes full bore up the field nearly every down to try and get a sack.

In doing so, he leaves holes to run through. And he doesn't bother to chase back down the field once he's made his pass rush. Allen will almost certainly cause some trouble to the passing game. It's why he's a pro bowler.

But Pittsburgh should be able to take advantage of his single-minded pursuit of glory by running towards his spot. Preferably with David Johnson or a pulling lineman to hit the linebacker on that side. Hopefully it will be Mendenhall hitting the vacated area quickly, and not Parker dancing around.

Cue David Johnson...

As you mentioned, DJ should be the secret weapon we use in stopping J Allen. I like the little bit I’ve seen of him in the H Back spot. He is supposed to be a great blocker, and has shown he is capable so far. This is his big test, if he is what we think he is, it will be his presence on the left side of our O-Line that will be the key to stopping the Vikes’ O.

And I think J Allen is better against the run than you give him credit for. He’s not a stuffer, and he has a lot of help on that line, but he has worked on his run defense. He knew he needed to step it up to match the play of his linemates. He’s not a great run stuffer yet, by any means, but in my opinion, he’s not completely one dimensional any more.

A little extreme...

I think Frazier’s idea for our 4-3/ tampa is to stuff the run with the interior linemen and the middle linebacker (EJ Henderson). This allows the ends to rush up the field and the RLB and LLB to roam behind them. This also demands that our corner backs and safeties tackle, which we did not do a very good job of last week.

Yes, he is often rushing up the field and hanging on the QB but I think he had 7 tackles last week. I personally have seen him stuff the run numerous times especially on 4th and short situations.

I will give you this, the screen over his head while he blitzes is unbearably productive. I think Frazier will finally have a solution to that this week however.

by Vikes Fan on Oct 20, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The real answer you need will be offense...

.
Jared Allen will certainly knock Ben around. That’s a given. And the Vikes have gotten 30 points a game, excepting the odd duck Detroit game. But the Steelers have not allowed anyone more than 28 points. Only three teams have been over 20 points, and that was when we were without Polamalu. So the real question is what the Vikes will do when they find that they have only managed 17 points late in the game. Can the purple Favre manage a couple late drives? Or will he regress to the white/green interception machine? You might guess what we think here.

I think you are really selling Allen short

The guy is a beast. There’s no way you can downplay him as a player. He plays like a madman from the snap to the whistle. Starks will have his hands full, but he will handle his business. He’ll need help every once in a while, but I think he’ll respond well to the challenge.

Everybody’s talking about Allen when we really need to be worried about Kevin Williams, the best player on that line. If he lines up over Essex, Ben might be in trouble Sunday. That guy is too much for one person to handle.

Agree

Also have to watch Greenway at OLB.

by pghnorthside on Oct 20, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Speed is the game

Allens game is speed and more speed. While he certainly isn’t weak, he will not overpower Starks. If he beats him it will be because he gets around him. He is also exceptionly good with his hands and using the opponents momentum to his advantage. He can be very good against the run but as mentioned earlier is vuneralbe to screens, which thankfully we seem to be getting better at.

by DarinS on Oct 20, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If I’m correct the system Minn. uses allows Allen to rush upfield with little line holding responsibility.

The Tackles take inside and the Middle and outside linebacker can cheat towards Allen’s gap. Screen passes work because the LB on that side has responsibilities in the middle. If you can force them to pull a safety up to stop the screen passes you can get one on one with a WR.

I’d go three wide a lot, esp. if Winfield is hampered or not out there, attack the edges, they are too strong up the middle.

I may be wrong, this is what I saw of them last year.

I know I’m watching any update on Winfield very carefully. He’s far and away their best player in the secondary.

by pghnorthside on Oct 20, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For my money...

He’s a top 2 corner in the league. Winfield is as physical as any corner in the league, plus he’s a solid cover guy. Winfield and Namdi (I’ll never spell that right) from Oakland (the best cover corner in football). Of course, if Willie Colon decides to play corner, he’s clearly in the discussion of top two, no doubt.

From what I have heard

That’s pretty correct. The RBs coming out of the flat, screens, and TEs can all have big days. I am pretty sure they do not give up many big plays. This sort of sounds familiar…

Anyway, have we played a defensive scheme even remotely similar to theirs?

I don’t think that’s a valid comparison. Philly tends to be an all or nothing penetrating/blitzing man defense (we saw the “nothing” last year). I’ve seen a lot more zone coverage from the Vikings. I mean, they have such a ridiculous DL that they don’t really need to blitz a whole lot the way the Eagles do.

The (2008) Titans might be a good comparison, however. They had a great DL and tended to sit in zones behind it with a pretty good secondary.

Strange how drastic that drop was.

Anyway, we need a big week from Arians. He better be planning some new stuff and some short drops, screens, etc.

That I can agree with

But look at their defense for passing from last year to this
2008 – 199.8ypg (9th)
2009 – 310.7ypg (32nd)

I don’t get it. Was Haynesworth really that big of an addition to stop an extra 100yards?

I don’t think so. I remember Finnegan and Harper being their CBs last year. And Hope and Griffin being their safeties.

I think Finnegan has actually been out the last 3 games. But still…seems odd. Did they lose their DC?

I'd bet

the Titans just aren’t controlling the ball on offense as much either, causing the defense to be on the field more.

I’m frankly only mildly surprised at their fall off. I guess I am surprised at the extent, but I, along with many of you I am sure, thought they weren’t even close to as good as their record indicated last year. And now they are in the midst of having a snowball effect, it keeps getting worse and worse and it’s gaining speed. They probably aren’t as bad as their record indicates this year.

Lastly they did lose their defensive coordinator along with Haynesworth in the off season.

by worldtrip on Oct 21, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, I did not think they were a 13-3 team last year. However, that was more do to the fact that I did not think Collins or their WRs were any good. I always thought the D was top 5 last year.

However, if you watched the Pats game, it clearly looked like they just flat out gave up. Moss and Welker seemed unguarded with little effort.

I bet their defensive coordinator was more important than they thought, just like in Baltimore.

I read somewhere, maybe here, that the Titan’s previous DC, Schwartz, was very detail oriented. To the point that it carried over to special teams, offense, and to the other coaches as well .

Vikes D isn't the best

Ben will have a field day as long as he doesn’t hold the ball too long back there. Short passes to Mendenhall and Moore are good for changing the pace. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing Ben tuck and run when his receivers are covered. That really drives the defense nuts! Ben should run a bit more often than he does, instead of forcing passes into coverage.

by Billy52 on Oct 20, 2009 6:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Especially on short conversions. Once that mental clock goes out he either needs to scramble like he’s renowned for, or run that baby as fast as he can. I didn’t like seeing him double pump fake a receiver, when the guy is wearing a defender like a bath robe, only to try and force it to him.

i do agree on some above thoughts that Ben will air it out well. This is our big first test coming up. Let’s hope our gameplan looks as well rehearsed as it did against SD.

Checked the Vikes defensive rankings on nfl.com

and I was stunned. Considering they’ve played the Browns, Rams, Niners and Lions, they should be putting up great numbers. Instead, they’re 9th against the run, 24th against the pass, 19th in points allowed, 18th in total yards allowed and are the 5th most penalized defense in the league.

Just looked through your games

Seems the only game you really gave up yards in “garbage” time was to the Rams. All of the other games the large chunks of yard at the games were before the two minute mark and the games still could have taken a swing.

Statistics are averages, and they give you a pretty accurate idea of what is going on. I’m not saying your defense is not good, but they do give up a lot of yards.

"statistics" being pretty accurate

You can make any argument with statistics. Which ones are accurate? There has been garbage time before the last 2 minutes.

Plenty of kinks

Watched the replay of the Balt. v. Mn game last night. There are plenty of kinks in the Mn defense. They are quick to the QB if he just stands there but on many plays they rushed hard on both sides and left a huge drive a truck through hole right up the middle. None of very little coverage underneath. Ben will eat them up if they want to play that game. If Jared Allen is rushing the passer and it is a run, he does nothing once the runner is past him, no pursuit at all, I saw this at least 5-6 times. Screens, draws, delays, underneath routes, all wide open all day long. On the flip side, their OL is solid, AP is AP, and the old man still has more zip on his passes than 80% of the QB’s out there with a damn quick release when he wants to. If we don’t try to get huge chunks we will move the ball on them pretty easily and control the clock.
