Comcast Weekly Red Zone Update

On to our weekly red zone update post, sponsored by Comcast and their spiffy new Comcast's Red Zone Channel. If you don't mind, leave some commentary about the channel if you in fact have it. On to the numbers from this past week.

Week 6 Red Zone Efficiency:

4 Trips; 2 TDs, 2 FGs

2009 Cumulative Red Zone Efficiency:

21 Trips; 13 TDs; 7 FGs; 1 missed FG - 61.9 %  TD efficiency (-2.8%)  95.2 % scoring efficiency (+1.1%)

Not as successful a day for Big Ben and the Steelers offense this past Sunday. The two drives that ended with Jeff Reed field goals were the drives Pittsburgh had been finishing off the previous two Sundays. If they hope to knock off the Vikings and run their winning streak to 4 games, they'd be well served finishing off drives better than they did against the Browns in Week 6.

I'm sick of Jeff Reed's antics

It’s embarrasing to the Steeler’s organization. It’s time to find another kicker……

I voted that he would not be in any more trouble while he's with the Steelers.

That’s because I don’t think he’s here very much longer. I used to like the guy, but he’s an embarrassment. He needs to get help.

Unfortunate to waste such potential. I bet he he’s regretting another poor decision he made a few months back, not taking the contract offer the Steeler’s offered him.

I've got Reed's back

For now. The guy says it didn’t happen like the cops say it did. Unfortunately, his reputation will preceed him, its a little like “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” On the other hand, everyone knows that cops never, ever drum up charges when you piss them off, right? If you think that, you’re naive. Reed is innocent until proven guilty. While he denies wrongdoing, the Steelers don’t have any right to punish him. The Steelers have shown little interest in resigning him (probably because of past behavior) so why would they try to teach him a lesson by benching him? That’s what they did with Holmes last year (he admitted wrongdoing, and went on to become Super Bowl MVP). Holmes was a young guy they had a real stake in, Reed’s on his way out anyway. Why not have him help us win? Especially when he says he’s Innocent?

The Steelers did show interest and tried to sign him, Reed turned down the offer

Yeah, I know that

I also heard somewhere it was for a good bit less than his current contract. Don’t blame the Steelers for watching the cap, and I don’t blame Reed for not giving us a home team discount. I said they’ve shown little interest (as in low offer), not no interest.

Reliable kickers aren't exactly a dime a dozen.

I don’t care if Reed boozes it up every night of the week, as long as he keeps splitting the uprights. Everyone knows that kickers are nut jobs anyway. And being occasionally drunk and ornery isn’t nearly as bad as other things that NFL players do.

I agree

I honestly kinda echo your thoughts. I dont think this merits removal from the team or whatever. But I will say Reeds been a little less than fantastic this year. KO’s are falling way early, and he’s got a few important misses.

So I have to say I dont know…

I get the feeling that Reed was out drinking and partying the night of the chicago game.

I have to wonder if he parties out on every team trip to other cities. Never seen him so off for a game- have to wonder if it was one of those 2 to 6 am binges, night before a game.

I wish Steve Houshka took a little nip of the bubbly every now and then. If he made the kick in Minn. he could stumble the streets like Edgar Poe for all I care. Hmmm…maybe he will be.

Anyhows, we softened Peterson up and knocked out Harvin for you. Play the lottery tonight. This will probably be an ongoing gift to you as we will beat down the opponents you play in the following weeks. Send us an assistant coaches SB ring when you get them.

I doubt Jeff Reed is with the Steelers much longer

I can’t see him getting the big contract he wants (and arguably deserves). The Steelers just don’t pay “Idiot Kickers” that much. Never have. Never will.

I think Jeff has said all of the right things after the incident. I really don’t care if he is the poster boy for SPCP (Society for the prevention of cruelty to Papertowl holders).

I just think he is a really good kicker who will be paid like a great kicker somewhere else, and the Steelers have better places to spend their money.

Well

You just blew your payday Jeffy!

Couple missed field goals and a couple of run ins with the law probably cost him a lot of $

if he is an alcoholic

He needs to seek the proper treatment. By 30, you’d think he would calm down some. Though a few of my friends the same age are prone to drinking more than they should.

I’m also curious that Spaeth’s involvement wasn’t getting much play. Was he also intoxicated?

by vherub on Oct 22, 2009 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that's weird

Especially since, by all accounts, it was really Spaeth who drew the cops attention in the first place…

I guess this is a case of Skippy having a track record.

Reed wont get in any more trouble

Look at the questions phrasing “with his time with the Steelers”

I think he’s gone by the end of the year. And likely, he’ll be able to behave that long.

by Mechem on Oct 22, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

That’s how I came to my selection. He’s done more than just two “cringe-worthy” things since he’s gotten here. I’m surprised that he made it this long in such a conservative organization. If he were still “Mr Automatic” he might have a chance to stick around for reduced pay, but his inopportune misses this year are not helping his hopes of getting the benefit of the doubt.

by Max Powers on Oct 22, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah let’s get rid of Skippy, there’s plenty of guys out there who can Kick at Heinz field.

Oh, wait, there aren’t.

Ben’s gotten worse press than this, so has James Harrison. As long as it isn’t a distraction to the team the Steelers will evaluate him on his play.

The Steelers have this reputation for avoiding players who get in trouble. It isn’t true, they avoid players who are disruptions to the team or a pain in the locker room. They don’t like guys who are bad teammates or aren’t team players.

The Steelers would look at Vick if he fit a need, his teammates loved him, they wouldn’t touch TO.

The thing I see that says Skippy won’t get big money is his kick-offs. With this offense we need a kicker who can kick-off well. Reed is below average right now. But then again, who kicks well at Heinz?

by Phantaskippy on Oct 22, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

I dont think everybody is saying lets get rid of him

Just that its likely going to happen…

I agree he isn’t doing anything that is that big of a deal. But his game has dropped off slightly.

If somebody is available as a free agent soon or something, I’d be open to it.

by Mechem on Oct 22, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Do I read those stats correctly, do we have 0 turnovers in the red zone?

That’s great.

My B-i-L has Dish Network and their red zone channel sucks so far. It’s never on when it says it will be, I’ve actually never watched it. Flip to it and see a note telling you to tune in anywhere from 2 hours ago to later tonight and it will be on. Except it isn’t.

Hopefully Comcast’s Red Zone Channel actually comes on.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 22, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Wearing out his welcome

I was still supportive after the missed field goals this year. Thought he just had a case of the yips. But maybe it’s too much boozed past the lips. Now I’m growing skeptical.

Is Gary Anderson still around?
