Peterson was listed as limited with a sprained ankle on Wednesday. Sounds like he'll still play this Sunday, however.

He will play

AP is one tough cookie (never understood that term).

He won’t be 100%, but neither is Polamalu, so I have no sympathy for them. As Tomlin says, it should not change our standard of expectation.

I would be happy if he sits out

But I am not that concerned if he plays, too. I just want the Steelers to win – with or without Purple Jesus, I don’t care.

A win is a win and anything that facilitates a win helps. However, I always find we rise to the challenge of a good running back. I used to love games against the Chargers a few years back because we always shut down LT. It would be great to see us do that to Peterson.

Purple Jesus

has to play. That is the whole reason my clan chose this game to attend when the schedule was released. Getting to see Favre turned out to be a bonus. I want the full product on the field.

PLUS, if those guys don’t play and the Steelers win, you KNOW all we’ll hear about forever is how the “Steelers only beat the Vikings cause they were shorthanded” crap.

Peterson will play

however the steelers defense has a solid chance of holding him under 100 yards if they have the lead. The thing about Peterson is he takes advantage of defenders mistakes. If you take the wrong angle on him, he’ll cut in one direction and be gone. If you try to hit him too high he will run you over. If you break down before tackling him he’ll just juke you out of your shoes and go around you. You need to have good tackling linebackers and secondary to stop him, and you have to swarm him. It’s by far to tackle single-handedly for the reasons mentioned above. Look at Patrcik Willis and the Niners, they own Peterson because they make physical contact as quick as possible and they have very good tackling linebackers. Lineman are somewhat insignificant to Peterson’s game because 1. Our offensive line usually opens a big enough hole or lane for him and 2. Even if the D-Line anticipated the hole and closes it, Peterson’s vision is so good that he’ll recognize there’s no hole and jump to the outside and take his chances 1 on 1 with the secondary.

Steelers have a good defense and are good tacklers, especially good linebackers. I think it will be a good game. But unfortunately I have a feeling my Vikings get beat this week in the house that ketchup built.

I want all of their starters to play

This is really the first game that presents itself as a challenge. Sure they have been getting everyone’s best shot, but this is the first that “presents” itself as a challenge. You could say the Titans game did too because they were thought to be challengers. I like this kind of test early in the season. Sort of a semester quiz. That said I want them to be full strength.

No matter know plays for them, I think the Steelers can handle them. If they don’t I’m going to run on the field and take the ball from Favre.

This is really the first game that presents itself as a challenge.

And trust me, I’m not trying to be a prick here — it’s a legitimate question, although it could potentially be misunderstood. However, how can anyone even say that whenthey’ve suffered at least one loss? Are you saying that the Bears and Bengals didn’t present themselves as a challenge prior to losing to them? I guess if you answer is yes, perhaps you should start looking at all teams as a challenge. After all, it’s any given Sunday. I guess if your answer is no, then what do you mean?

I’m not sure if this is what PixburghArn meant by “presents itself as a challenge,” but this game seems to be the most challenging game to date regarding game planning. On defense, do we stack the box to control AP or do we play to limit Favre’s options? Offensively, how important is establishing the run against their stout defense?

To a certain extent, game plans are defenestrated once a game unfolds. That being said, I feel like our approach to this game, and the balance between adapting and adhering to our plan is more interesting than normal against this well-rounded opponent.

On the Vikings end as well, I would imagine. I guess I was thrown off a little because some of the other teams the Steelers have played to date seem challenging as well.

Didn't we really beat ourselves in those losses?

I mean, sure, all teams represent a certain level of challenge, but we really aided and abetted the winners in those losses. I think the vikings may represent the first team that could beat us despite us playing all out. I think if we didn’t give away the other games, we’d be 6-0.

Adrian Peterson could lead the league in rushing hopping on one leg, so I’ve got no doubt he’ll be effective. If it limits his cutting ability even a bit though, it will greatly help us contain him.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 22, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree with you on the importance of the cutting. A lot of the long runs AP had vs the Ravens were on what looked like designed cutbacks, with some very good blocking waiting on the backside of the start of the play. Unfortunately, this is where we are vulnerable right now – Kirshce, Eason and Hood will need to stay home here and get through some blocks, or at least stand their ground and re-direct AP to our LBs.

Regardless, he’s a beast and will be up to the challenge.

Come on - we're not all cocky

Ok, maybe a little, but we’ve been enjoying the season so far – give us a break.

As for the Peterson injury report, it doesn’t cause too much concern. He’s been listed the last few weeks and has been frequently in the past. I don’t think this is Childress pulling a Belichek with the injury report, but Peterson just ends up with some minor wear and tear after running so damn hard every game. The Winfield injury looks like a much more serious deal. Your pass offense scares the bejeezus out of me…

Is this Childress pulling a Belichick ?

In the ’07 season, it seemed that The Hooded Man had Brady on the injury list from week to week. But come game time, Brady played. It almost became a joke in some media outlets.

So, could Childress simply be playing with his own injury list in an effort to influence the way the Steelers prepare for Sunday? I have to believe that, as long as AP is at least 70%, he’s gonna be suiting up.

AP's injury

I don’t think Chilly Willy is pullin’ a Bellicheat on anyone. I watched the Vikes-Ravens game last night on NFL Replay and he took a nasty looking tackle on the ankle, getting rolled up under the Raven tackling him late in the 2nd half. He eventually came back in the game towards the end, but I don’t remember him getting any plays after that. I imagine he’s got a pretty sore ‘cankle’ this week.

Harvin re-injured his shoulder during that game as well (2nd week in a row), but I haven’t heard anything on his availability.

no one qualifies wins and loss based on the injury report

We missed Troy in weeks 2-5, but that doesn’t excuse those losses.

Even at <100%, AP is still a dangerous. I’m sure the Vikes aren’t looking at exploiting a <100% Troy either.

A lot of analysts are saying Troy being back makes this a totally different team, and talk about our defensive ranking Troy vs no Troy. It’s not College football, but it will still get a lot of play.

Well its freaking true

I mean look at our 4th quarter D without him. We were flat out ugly.

Its nice when a team gets their due note. I mean in all honesty, we face a better chance of winning with a <100% AP and no winfield, and if we win by less than a score, I’ll be the first to admit that may have been why.

by Salty on Oct 22, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

AP at 85% is to be reckoned with

Lineman must maintain their lanes. LB’s must fill the gaps and play disciplined. ALL must tackle. Secondary needs to play good run assist. Playing disciplined defense against AP shuts down his ability to ad lib and make 2nd cuts. A sprained ankle will also hinder that ability. I expect to see AP run more North-South this game without the flashy cuts. He will still get his yds but no game-breakers……….I hope
If the Steelers can minimize the effect of AP, that makes them rely more on Brett’s passing game. This is when the ole boy tends to throw his INT’s which he really hasn’t done much so far this yr.

Vikings fan concerns

has nothing to do with injuries really, as much as I’m worried about Childress and his highly conservative and ineffective playcalling. For years he put AP on the bench in the 4 quarters of games we could’ve won when he was our only offensive weapon. He’s a coach that has a my-way-or-the-highway philosophy and develops his strategy and schemes that have nothing to do with the type of talent on the roster.

Odds are this game will be close, and Childress has gotten away with murder so far in three 4th quarter home games.

I want Tomlin back, we had him first.

You can have him in forty years when we get a new coach.

I heard Bill Cowher is available though.

I’d be happy to trade OL coaches.

You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"

Distraction

Childress is trying to distract the Steelers. Peterson will get a local painkiller in his foot, and be fine on Sunday.

"local painkiller "

Local physiologically or geographically?

WATCH FAVRE NOT A P

Many teams focus on stopping A P. All this lends it self to is to pass the football to an open receiver from Favre. A P no doubt is a force to be reconed with but to only focus on shutting him down is suicide in the ranks of the NFL especially with Favre sniping at QB. Favre will pick apart the other team. Minnesota is too well stacked now to only depend on a R B for all the TD scoring. Containing Peterson only will not win you very many games against the Vikings.
