Steeler Bar Google Map

A couple months after the Super Bowl, I was brain storming with Blitz about possible features for this site. During the conversation we hit upon the idea of a google map for Steeler Nation. The main purpose of the map would be to help people find Steeler Bars - that is places to watch the game on Sunday.

In any case, it's testament to my laziness that it has taken me nearly 8 months to get this post up.  However with some big deadlines looming on the school and work front, I figured this would be the perfect time to work on it.

I like to think of procrastination as a double edged sword.  A sword that usually sits in the closet and isn't pulled out till the very last minute.

Why a google map?

As many of you know the Post-Gazette has a great listing of Steeler Bars.

Why should we waste our precious time (or in some of your cases your employers precious time) re-inventing the list?  There are two good reasons:

First, the Post-Gazette list is a fairly static list. You have to go through the PG to add or delete a bar. There is no additional information available about any of the bars - for example - do they have audio of the game? Are they a Steeler only bar or a big sports bar with the Sunday ticket etc.?  With the google map YOU (that is all of Steeler Nation) will be able to go online and edit the list.

Second, you can't see the locations of the bars in the Post-Gazette list. In fact you can only search by state. With the google map you will be able to just type name of the city (or address) and see all the bars and landmarks around it.

How to add a bar or a landmark

First click on the link below. If you have a google account you should be ready to edit. If not you will need to create one. This is easy and should take all of two seconds. (You do not need G-Mail to have a google account)

Once you are on you can edit at will.

A couple of tips:

1. You can search for your bar by name on Google maps. Many of the bars already have business listings on Google maps. If you find it you can simply add by clicking "Save to MyMaps".  Just make sure that you save it to the Steeler Bars and Steeler Nation map. You should be able to see it in the drop down menu.

2. If you can't find your bar on a search of google maps you can simply add it to the map by searching the address and then adding the address (along with the name) in the same way.

3. Write something about the bars you know. Let us know if they have audio for the games, what the crowd is like etc.  Be as brief or fancy as you like.

Overall Google maps is pretty amazing. If there is anyone who knows the program well and wants to add cool features that map, please do.

Some extra instructions here for anyone who is have a hard time.

What next?

So far, I have only put a couple of bars.

To start with, it would be great if everyone on here could just add a couple of the places that they know well. This is especially important if you live outside of Pittsburgh and go to a local place to catch the game.

I will be adding some of the ones from the Post-Gazette list as time goes on - anybody else who has time should feel free to add their own.

As the list grows, it will hopefully turn in to a comprehensive resource for Steeler fans around the world.

Landmarks apart from Bars

It might also be interesting to add certain landmarks. I am not sure exactly what that would entail, but essentially think of it as a way to put interesting Steeler things on the map.  Maybe you know a place that has a 20 foot tall statue of Jack Lambert or a life sized wax statue of Franco Harris making the immaculate reception. That might be worth putting on the map. Perhaps a store front that someone really did nice

A couple Simple Rules:

Although other stuff might come up only a few things strike me as potentially problematic.

1. Posting private information. If you know where Mike Tomlin lives, good for you, but keep it to yourself. There is no reason the rest of the world needs to know.

2. Wrong or misleading information.  Not sure there is too much we can do with an open community, but let's all try to police it as best as possible. Be on the look out for information that looks outdated, wrong or misleading.

Great idea. The post-gazette list sucks something serious.

Yeah

It’s odd they really didn’t think it out. It’s very hard to find a bar there.

I thought I'd point out

that somebody used the pg list to create a google map.
pg google map
It doesn’t have any personal commentary, though, just addresses.

ha dang it!

I checked when i came up with the idea and couldn’t find anything. Great find though. I wonder if there is anyway to combine the two.

Nice work guys

Here’s another one to add:

Cheaters Sports Bar
3221 Folsom Blvd.
Sacramento, CA 95816

It’s a real shit hole, but a Steelers bar nonetheless.

breathe in deep feel your heart beat, just to know that life's worth livin'. feel your feet on the earth, better love it while it's still here spinnin'.

Got another one for ya

A&L Sports Pub
5933 N.E. Glisan St.
Portland, Oregon 97213
(503) 405-8113

This is a proper Steeler bar. Last week was standing room only, and it’s a big bar. Rowdy, drunken World Champion Steelers fans. They even frequently do a “Here we go Steelers, here we go!” chant. Great atmosphere and energy during a Pittsburgh game.

Hi SteelerFever

You should be able to add the bar to the map if you follow the instructions above (I just added a couple more to make it clearer).

If you are having any trouble, let me know and I am happy to help, just want to make sure as many people as possible feel that they can go in and edit the map themselves as opposed to posting the names of the bars in the comments section. Let me know if that makes sense.

Fantastic Steelers bar!

Hey

See my response to SteelerFever above, while I am happy to help and or add for anyone who is having a hard time, it would be great if most people were just able to do it on their own, so that we can really get this sucker filled up organically as a community.

As I said though, if you can’t edit, let me know what’s happening and I will either post your bars up there or try to post clearer instructions on how to do it.

by SteelerBuddha on Oct 23, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotcha

I put it on there. But I just wanted to post. I meet a lot of fellow Steeler fans that don’t even know about it.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome!

Thanks – yeah, the hope is that we will make this a good tool for members of the nation who are travelling and searching for a friendly place to catch the big game.

by SteelerBuddha on Oct 23, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

yes please all add on your own

Please add to the map yourself if at all possible. It’s real easy with a Google account and if you don’t have one, you should :)

However, if you’d simply rather not, please still mention your spot(s) here in the thread for me, Buddha or others to add. And of course just mention what you added anyway, so we all can read about ’em and see the diverse places we all come from. Thanks. Happy Friday

I'm working on finding the name and address

There’s a bar in Chicago I went to for Steeler games, they had a polka band and made Primanti-esque sandwiches and sold Iron City beer, this was several years back so I don’t know if they do all that now, but it was great and insanely crowded.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 23, 2009 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

Found it, Joe’s bar on Weed street. There are at least 12 Steeler Bars in Chicago (they have a yearly contest for best Steeler bar) but this one stands out because they have Pitt beers and sometimes food, as well as the polka band.

Joe’s, home of the Chicago Steelers fan club.

940 W. Weed St.
Chicago, IL 60622

It’s within walking distance of the Sheffield stop on the Red Line.

great idea

Adding- or subtracting- that Scruffy Duffy’s in New York was a fine Steeler bar, however, it closed about 2 years ago (building it was in got torn down).

How come Francos catching that ball in the air in that top picture?

In Baltimore you can go to The Emerald Tavern on Harford Road. It’s owned by some old Steeler linebacker from the ’50’s. ESPN did a thing about him and his place. Great 1/2 time FREE food.

Gotta add this one

Sorry but I don’t have a google account and don’t really need another account of any variety. So if anyone wants to add this please feel free. It’s called Frickers, and it’s located right in Bens hometown of Findlay, Ohio. I use to work in Findlay and this is a super place to watch the Steelers. Damn good food, great people.

St. Pete Beach - Woody's

I was in St. Pete Beach last X-mas and went to a great little dive on the water called Woody’s. The owner is from Mt. Lebanon, and the place is full of Steelers gear. I’m not sure if he has satellite / ST, but perhaps a Florida local can chime in with details.

I’d really like to find a place in the western suburbs of Chicago – the north side of Chicago places aren’t very convenient, especially if you want to have a few beers. I went to a sports bar called Arena in Elmhurst last week for the Browns game. Lots of screens, but only two with the Steelers and no audio – they had Giants / Saints blasting throughout. I was also the only person wearing black & gold.

Piranah's Bar & Grill Nashville, TN

113 2nd Ave.
Nashville,TN 37201
(615) 248-4375

Not an enormous place but a great place to be a Steeler fan! Pirmani-like sandwiches, too! Tons of “Cleveland Sucks” stuff. The owners are Pittsburgh transplants and Pens games available, too. Right across the street from the Wild Horse Saloon…. Coyote Ugly… etc. You can walk a little down the street to the Hard Rock Cafe and look across the river (dirty, disgusting Cumberland) and flip off LP Field if you’d like, too. That’s always fun.

When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
