Around SBN: Tom Brady And The Confusing Pantheon Of QB Greatness

Late Game Thread

Another day, another heart attack.

The good news is, that like the cardiac kids of last year the Steelers found a way to win.

The stat hogs (Rivers, Brady and Manning) had great days. Ben didn't shine statistically, but we won one. It would be nice to have that and 400 yards in the air, but if you have to choose between the two it's a no brainer.

So on to the late games.

The important one for us of course is Cinci at Chicago - the two teams who beat us this year.

Obviously we are all Bears fans on this one.

Bengals are too good for the Bears. They have receivers and an under hyped defense. The Bears have no receivers, an overrated defense and their most dangerous weapon on a leash.

Wowz

I was just over at the Vikings board saying good game…never seen a fan base believe so whole-heartedly that the Refs lost em the game.

That’s the story of the game right there.

We’ve complained and yes, even whined about the ref’s around here too. It’s sad. No ref can make you lose. They just make you do more to win.

OK, so that pick by Troy against Indy in 2005 that they called off and Indy scored? Or how about all the times Tackles take Harrison to the ground from behind?

Or does it only count when you lose. Because the Steelers still when when the calls go against them.

You can man up and win the game anyway, or you can cry about the world being unfair.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 25, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The world is unfair

We lose 3 str8 with no momentum what so ever, and you guys win 4 straight, getting your best player back from injury with all the momentum.

"The refs have and will always be on the Steelers side, so you don’t understand what it feels like."

Oh like when they let the Jags hold the Steelers D which resulted in a huge first down in the 2007 playoff loss and the refs officially admitted later they were wrong and apologized to the Steelers? Or the non-holding calls on Harrison last year and this year?

I’m only citing these examples to prove you wrong, not to complain about it. I’m definitely over them by now. Weren’t you complaining about a scheduling conspiracy against the Ravens on the Beatdown? Maybe the reason the Steelers beat the Ravens is because they are a superior team. Did you ever think of that?

Now that we are back in friendly territory Johnny

I just wanted to let you know that it was funny to watch you butt kissing the Minnesota fans. I didn’t use offensive language, you did. If you would have paid attention to what they were posting, ie the refs cheated ,the steelers suck, Big ben is a rapist QB etc you would have seen they were being sore losers. So I had fun with them. The name calling wasn’t necessary and like I said, you wouldn’t do it in front of me.

by Dr Del on Oct 25, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

Good game and in the end you outplayed us.

We had a few guys step up; I thought Favre was heroic on a couple of drives and Peterson and Rice played big. But we also had a lot of guys who didn’t: We couldn’t make the big plays, had way too many penalties at critical times and couldn’t punch the ball in from the one (and yes we are all screaming at Childress in regard to the play calling on that one).

A couple of questionable calls but I won’t put it on that. We still had opportunities to win the game and didn’t do it; it’s a team game.

Congratulations on a great win; I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch later.

It really was a good game

Not without mistakes (no excuse for Reed being a jackass and pretending he was going to tackle someone) but all in all it was good to see AP didn’t rock the numbers on our defense. “Any given Sunday”…. today was ours. Good game Lurker.

I'd love to see a rematch....

I’ve taken some heat for saying how much I love to watch Favre and how great he has been for the game….but I also point out that – just before the curtain falls – he’s more likely to break your heart than he is bring you that late season victory.

Like Reggie Jackson, he’s Mister October. Of course, baseball ends in October (or maybe November).

Wow, it’s the first loss of the season, calm down a bit. Give the Steelers some credit. And to the whiners, the Vikings weren’t the only team in that game to get a TD taken off the books with a questionable call!

I saw a few nice respectful Vikings fans around the forum this week. Good luck to you guys and your great team! They will be very competitive for some home playoff games in the NFC this year. This game was special and there were tons of awesome plays and emotion swings for both teams. The Steelers defense finally stood up and really reminded us of 2008!

Just for Fun

Yes, fun, and only for fun. He’s some of the Minnesota wisdom that explains why I don’t like to engage in smack talk prior to the game.

“Settle down silly steeler, You think you are beating the Vikings. No chance! The undefeated Vikings will come wielding victory axes and slaughter the silly steelers, in all aspects of the game. Jarred Allen will squish Ben like a cheeseburger under his foot. The only way to stop his domination is to cut off his mullet ala like Samson. Victory!!” – Packslayer

“You might like to look at the stats, but when in comes down to the facts. The Vikings will slaughter the Steelers, make you look like banana peelers.” – Packslayer

“Well then, bring on this Clark fellow.” – Bjorno

“As A Witness (of watching of course), any given Sunday Peterson can do some tremendous things to "Great" Defenses!” – UnbannedVikingholic

“The Steelers are gonna have to run the football to win. The Vikings intend on controlling the game with the running game.” – Curiousg87

AP/ Taylor will have a big day.” – gt.eye.guy

No Sweat
“Silly Steelers, Vikings got this game bagged, it wont be blowout, but it will be a Vikings W. The Vikings biggest challenge thus far? Infant Please” - Packslayer

“Turnovers: The Vikes have only turned the ball over 4 times this year (two INT – two Peterson fumbles). We need not to turn it over and realistically we probably need the Steelers to turn it over once or twice.” – Migrantlurker

“Big Ben is sacked more than any other QB. So its inevitable Allen will get at least 1 sack…” – Curiousg87

Squish
“Squish will be the noise when Adrian runs all over your players. Silly steelers, there is no way that the steelers will beat the Undefeated Minnesota Vikings. It’s going to be a one sided slaughterfest. Silly silly steelers” – Packslayer

I have enough time to watch Steeler games and barely enough to keep up with the posts here at BTSC. I don’t follow the entire league. So, I do enjoy it when fans of other teams come into town and talk to us about the strengths of their teams. It’s a learning experience. Then there are the things no one should be saying before the game has been played… Anyway, thanks to those Viking fans who did bring valuable insights over the past week.

Wondering how I got included in that company,

with that particular comment. I didn’t say what I predicted us to do: I said what we needed to do to win, and obviously that was precisely what undid us.

by Migrant lurker on Oct 25, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

But some of your cohorts are just foolish

Not saying that you are, but if you Viking fans believe that you can’t be beaten then you got another thing coming. This is not college football, this the NFL. Grown men against other grown a** men.

And you guys better hope Favre doesn’t revert back to his old self. He’s been taking care of the ball so far, but like I said earlier this week it’s difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.

by StoneColdSteel on Oct 25, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, there is a quote or two that is taken out of context. Your remark is only funny because we scored half our points on turnovers. Bjorno’s request for Clark is only amusing because Clark got in one good hit, but it wasn’t even against the player he was (righfully) bragging about at the time (AP). Half the guys who are on that list also provided good commentary, or at least their sillier remarks were good-natured. This was not meant as an indictment; it’s just for fun.

by Varmint on Oct 26, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

"Silly Steelers, The Vikings biggest challenge thus far? Infant Please"

I just don’t understand where the disrespect is coming from. Same thing with the titans fans earlier. I doesn’t bother me but it’s interesting. Judging by junk like this and the incessant, infantile whining at their board today, the SBN contingent of Vikings fans appear to have an average age of 15 and average IQ of about 60. The hate is just weird since we never play these guys.

Thanks Varmint for rounding up all this nonsense in one place for ease of ridicule.

"But some of your cohorts are just foolish"

Yes, we’ve got a few (even a couple worse than the ones you listed). But there are a lot of reasonable and knowledgeable fans over there too, and a number of them were wondering aloud if we would win this week (and some of them predicted we wouldn’t). If you want to find foolish and loudmouthed fans, I’m sure you can find them on any blog (maybe you even have some here?).

If I remember the entire post that that quote was extracted from, I believe I basically said that we wouldn’t win unless we had some good things happen. We didn’t and we lost. However, I was actually surprised at how well we played overall against a heck of a good team (the best we are going to face in the regular season this year, imo).

As to Favre, I think the old dog has taught himself some new tricks. I’ve been watching him for years and he is just playing differently. I didn’t think anything he did at the end of the game showed any signs of ‘reverting to form.’ Getting the ball knocked out of your hand as you are getting read to throw happens. It’s his first fumble this year, it just happened at a bad time.

He probably could have thrown a slightly better pass on the INT but it was a catchable ball and bounced right to a defender; not the kind of thing you could hang a prediction on. We’ll see, but nothing that happened this week makes me question his determination to avoid turnovers this year.

We’ll be in the playoffs; so will you. I really would not be terribly surprised if we meet again.
