Minn fan with a beef - I'm going to try to be as respectful and classy as I can...
OK, good game - hard fought, and definitely interesting till the end. I grew up in PA, so I have a lot of respect for this organization. Now, on to the beef...
Even if there WAS a hold on the kickoff return...
That still doesn’t make up for the bad "tripping" call, because there’s no guarantee PITT would’ve scored on the ensuing possession.
The way I see it, even WITH a bad kickoff return called, PITT came out ahead:
- Without the "two bad calls": MIN up by 4. (TOTAL momentum swing and the second INT probably doesn't happen.)
- With the "two bad calls": Both an INT return and a KO return - original score basically stays the same - PIT up by 3. (Momentum shifts back to PIT and sets up a higher pressure situation where Favre has to force more throws, like the one to Chester that gets picked.)
OK...make your case that you would have won the game anyway...

I think a lot of Vikes fans are mistaking the position we hold on the tripping. It was not a penalty, clearly. The ref called it though, so that’s how it goes. We are just saying it does not matter because bad calls happen. Just like the kick-off hold or the “pass-interference” on Heath. It happens, and they suck. But BOTH teams got bad calls.
Do you think we paid off the refs? Do you really think the refs care either way who wins? I will tell you now, they get a pay check either way. They actually get docked points and ultimately money for bad calls, so why would they purposely make them?
In summary, I must quote a wise man. Forrest Gump once said “shit happens”.

It was a stupid mistake no doubt
No fumble is a good one but that is easily classified as an effort fumble, still stupid but a little more forgivable, he will learn. Easy to forget sometimes this is only what his 4th game as the main back. He could have easily had a hondo and ground out the clock.

The fumble was painful. I was sitting there in my Mendenhall jersey, watching the game. Kenny Albert calls “Mendenhall fumbled the ball!” and I yelled “NO HE DIDN’T!”
It was a painful moment.
But I don’t understand how you don’t run a guy who is averaging 6.9 yards per carry more than 10 times in a close game. Yes, the fumble was bad, and that was pretty obviously the consideration that led Arians and Tomlin to limit Mendenhall’s carries. However, I feel like that fumble during the over-the-top dive is less an indictment on Mendenhall’s ability to hang on to the ball and more the result of the nature of that particular rush attempt. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Mendenhall has but two fumbles on the year, and both of them were in somewhat irregular circumstances: being stripped while on the “ground” (on top of another player) and diving over a pile trying to gain hard yards in the red zone.
Don’t get me wrong, you absolutely need to hold on to those balls, but it’s not like Mendenhall was just running an off-tackle and let the ball pop out. He’s a hard runner who breaks big runs every game and gets the tough yards that Willie Parker just cannot. I’m certainly not jumping off the Mendenhall bandwagon.
Here’s to hoping that Hines Ward puts up another bounty on knocking the ball out of Mendenhall’s hands during the bye week.

This fumble is less painful than the first one
On the first one he did not hold on to the ball. I’ve said the play should have been blown dead, true. However, Mendenhall needs to hold on to that thing with dear life till he hears a whistle.
This one, I was mad about, but not as bad. Mendenhall is basically a rookie this year, and has only had 4 games getting significant carries. I believe he will learn from this fumble that you DO NOT leave your feet unless the play is designed that way (i.e. goal line carry over the top). It was a boneheaded play that you won’t see him make once he gets the experience.
I agree with you though, it was frustrating to see a guy who is punishing a defense get pulled out of the game when we needed him most. I love MeMo, but he doesn’t run like the Spin Doctor does.

I think the point was to show Mendy the importance of ball security, drop the ball, you don’t play. Apparently someone feels(perhaps Tomlin), that this is a lesson that needs to be driven home.
Was it last week when Mendy and Willie fumbled, that Memo closed out the game?
I do not think Tomlin thought that if he sits Mendenhall, we have no chance to win.

He coughed it up
in the redzone with a chance to essentially salt the game away. He was given a chance to excel because of the injury to FWP and despite the many positives he brings to the table has put the ball on the turf the past two weeks. IF you want to be on the field in crunch time hang on to the football. It’s really quite simple. I agree 100% with coach’s decision to bench him down the stretch the past two weeks. He needs to learn to hang on to the football. Period.
As for all the statements regarding him essentially being a rookie or he was really putting forth a lot of effort, etc, please, please stop it. Let’s call them what they are – excuses.
You/we/he shouldn’t have to be making excuses for Rashard Mendenhall. He’s a first round draft pick who is an NFL running back. He knows his primary responsibility is to hang on to the rock and he hasn’t been doing it. There is no excuse. He’s turning the ball over too frequently and at critical junctions in closely fought football games.

What about the Jerome Bettis fumble against the Colts? Had it gone to overtime, do you put Bettis on the bench?
Or what about the fumble Ward had inside the 10 against the Titans this year?
He is still young and does not have the knowledge/experience that playing NFL snaps gives you. It’s not like he left the ball out there and a defender snatched it. He left his feet to jump over a pile, which, yes, is dumb, but now he can learn from that experience. I guarantee he would not have made the same boneheaded move.
It’s all in the past, because we won, but I still don’t agree with it.

I'm going to trust our coach on this one
Mendenhall has had fumble troubles since day one as a Steeler. Do you recall he had to carry around the FB for weeks at a time as a rookie because he was regularly coughing it up? This isn’t a new theme with Rashard. Unfortunately it’s a recurring one.
As for comparing a young RB to two sure fire hall of famers – c’mon man. There is no comparison. Ward and Bettis have proven over the years that they have/had the mindset to bounce back from mistakes. Mendenhall has not.
Perhaps the reason he was benched was because of the attitude he displayed after coming back to the sideline? I don’t know. You don’t know. I guess we just have to trust that Coach Tomlin made the right decision.

I’m just saying. Players deserve chances after a fumble in a game. This fumble had nothing to do with how he carries the ball. It had to do with him jumping in the air for no reason, an inexperienced move that I doubt he’ll make again with good coaching.
Who knows what his attitude was, of course. I am saying had there been none of that, I don’t get holding him outta the game that we needed to win and at the time he was the only positive thing we had going.

I am not sure why the fumble occured, but I am confident that Tomlin is trying to get a handle on them reduce them.
Benching Mendy also shows a coachng consistency, acording to Wexell (you will need to click “more” at the bottom of the page) Sweed has been inactive for the past two games. I think the message to young players on fumbles is clear.

Look I agree with benching him to punish him. I said in another post he should be benched against the Broncos if he does not show considerable effort/improvement with how he carries the ball.
I just don’t like benching a player when it hurts our chances to win a game that is going on right then. However, if his attitude was poor after the fumble than I have no problem with the bench. Being disrespectful to a coach is a whole different ball game.

I understand your point
that Mendenhall was ripping off some large chunks of yardage during that game, but overall you appear to be contradicting yourself. I guess I just don’t understand how turning the ball over to your opponent hurts our chances of winning? That is exactly what Rashard has done the past two weeks.
We can sit and make excuses for him all day long. He should have been whistled down against the Browns, he was putting forth extra effort against the Vikings, etc., etc. The bottom line is he has put his team in poor situations and taken points off the board late in the past two weeks because he just can’t hang onto the football.
I’d rather have Mewelde Moore make a poor decision to bounce a run outside and lose two yards as opposed to run it up the gut for +1 yard, then to have Mendenhall break off an 8 yard run only to have the defense strip him and get possession of the football on a short field.
Rashard let his team down. Again. Period. He needs to realize that fact and fix his issues with fumbling. If he doesn’t he won’t be playing. RBs who can’t hang on to the rock are worthless. No matter how good the rest of their skill set is.
by King Coebra on Oct 27, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can understand that, but you are also assuming that Mendenhall would have fumbled again had he gone back in. At the same time I am assuming he would not have fumbled had he gone back in. I agree with you guys that a point should be made to Rashard that fumbling the ball is not going to be accepted, I just don’t know if I liked how it went then.
I suppose, as LTSF, said we will have to agree to disagree.

I understand that you “don’t like benching a player when it hurts our chances to win a game that is going on right then.”
Some players respond well to this type of coaching, and some to that type. I think the coaches should do whatever they can to get the “ball control” point across.
Can we agree to disagree on this point?

Yeah
I was going to mention that in response to the comparison to Bettis and Ward made earlier. After posting my response and on my way to work I thought a better comparison was to Sweed. Both he and Mendy are inexperienced young players with seemingly unlimited potential who need to produce to increase their playing time. Both, to this point in their careers, have dropped the ball and really have nobody but themselves to blame for their limited roles in the offense.
It doesn’t do any good to have a tall, fast wr who frequently gets wide open if he can’t catch the ball. Likewise, it hurts the team to have a complete rb with unlimited potential if he continues hurting the team by turning the ball over during key points in the game.
I hope both players grow up and become productive players. The Steelers invested high draft picks in both of them for a reason. It’s their responsibility to grow and to learn so that they can be trusted with the football during crunch time..

OK
so the refs gave Min 11 net pts (4 pts from the PI Heath and 7 from the kickoff return) and gave Pitt 14, assuming those INT would not have happened.
That means it would have been a tie game at the end and still changed the situation entirely.

Silly
Playing the what if game is always kind of silly albeit a little fun. I think it is fair to say though that if you are assigning points to ref mistakes, you can only do so to the play itself, trying to predict or assume what would have happened down the road is just plain silly. Not that any of it really matters. Bottom line is the VIkes played well but not well enough.

I am just shocked the way the Vikings fans are whining about the refs in this game today. And as usual in most games that the refs “gave to the Steelers” there is actually a Steelers’ touchdown taken off the books with a questionable call. Go figure.
In my opinion this game was a lot like the Superbowl with a tight game and huge defensive scores from the Steelers. The game also featured whining bandwagon fans complaining about things they don’t understand. I guess plays like the ones shown below are total flukes with no talent involved. Steelers defensemen just mistakenly grabbed the ball and fell backward over 50 yards into the endzone twice! We’re so lucky!

Wow that second one is a great pic. Just looking at it for the first time. Haha Favre!

You gotta admit however that William Gay got absolutely destroyed by AP in the 4th off that screen. It was like two negative sides of a magnet coming together, but Gay was the one who got knocked back. Just bounced off him.
These guys have no reason to whine. If you go back and watch the Harvin kick return for a TD, you will see maybe the worst hold in history that was not called. Whoever that Viking was, he was literally sideways running with two full hands of Pittsburgh Jersey. Had that been called and the Vikings lost by 17 instead, can you imagine the complaining at that point?

Gay has a sense of humor and he’s gonna need it because the Steelers won’t let him forget about it! At least Gay stayed coherent and didn’t get literally knocked out. I would rather have that happen than what AP did to the Browns. That was WAY worse!

Plenty of bad calls and bad no calls to go around, in the end they probably evened out, if anything we got the worst of it. Bottom line is we made the plays when we needed to and MN didn’t. That is a fine team and they will win their share and who knows maybe we’ll see each other again this year. I used to live in MN and was fending off text messages most of the game including the “looks like another fourth quarter comeback for Farve” which was rather gleefully answered with a simple -Or not! Dugan was trying to trip the guy. He wiffed on his assignment and scissored his legs (oh, stop Mr. Hand). He knew what he was doing. I would have called it.
Did you notice how Ward would have scored a TD on his quick slant IF the refs didn’t call the defensive delay of game. Everyone was up on the line including the safeties. Ward would have been long gone.
Leave it to a Raven alumnus to botch the last minute of a Steelers game. That pass was right at his face BUT considering Brett only had to throw the ball 4 yards with mega time it should have been in his chest.

on the first Minny scoring drive on a crucial third down, Phil Loadholt jumped about a second before the snap count, it was inexplicably not called.
Stuff happens. The vikings had every chance to win this game and did not. The Steelers barely managed to hold on – and almost gave it away with stupid plays -but they didn’t. In the end that’s all that counts.

Geez, you're kidding me...right?
Actually, I just was watching the NFL Network and both Deion Sanders and Steve Mariucci completely agreed with the tripping call.
Maybe Mike Pereira will discuss this in this “Official Review” segment, who knows? But according to Deion and Mooch (neither one of which are afraid to call out the refs if they think it is a bad call) the tripping call was made becuase he kicked out his legs. WIthout that, it is a body block. But when he kicks out his legs as he goes down, it is a trip, and will be called every time.
As for the “Game changing fourth quarter” argument, I’m not a big fan. If something is a penalty in the first quarter, it needs to be a penalty in the fourth.
Oh, and by the way, feel free to protect your quarterback so he doesn’t get the ball stripped on the next play…
My point is that the refs did not wave off the touchdown and then give the ball to Pittsburgh at the spot of the foul. They gave it back to the Vikings who then failed to pass protect and lost the ball. That is not the ref’s fault. Talk to your Offensive line.
If the Vikings had manafged to strip the ball after the “passing interference” call on Miller, and run it back for a TD, it would have been the same point swing.
But they didn’t. Instead, Pittsburgh converted a field goal and the Vikings lost the ball to the Pittsburgh defense and gave up seven.
The Vikings were beat by the Steelers — not the refs. If you are going to be a championship team, you need to learn to accept responsibility for your own actions.
Quit whining about it already. Your team is 6-1 with a real good shot at the playoffs.

Dugan whiffed on Deebo so badly I thought I was watching Spaeth. AND after Dugan whiffed, he stuck out and stuck up his legs. The refs call that. And if you do in on the outside against an OL who has a clear shot at the QB, they will call it every time.

Here is a Terrible Towel...
…for you to cry in. There is no reason to “make your case that the Steelers would have won anyway”. They did win. You have to make the case that somehow the refereeing was so lopsided that it somehow cost the Vikes the game. You didn’t. Winners don’t complain about one marginal call that didn’t decide the game. They find a way to overcome mistakes that they make and refs make. That’s why the Steelers won despite the call on Heath, despite the refs swallowing their flag on the hold on Percy’s kickoff return, despite Loadholt’s illegal motion and so forth.
I hope your Vikes have more backbone than you do, because if they’re just going to whine about calls they won’t make it very far in this league.

1) tripping call? that was the definition of a leg whip. illegal and dangerous. maybe because you’re a fan of an nfc team, you’re used to the atrocious announcers on fox and they’re dumb opinions about things, but we regular watchers of abc know better
2) you don’t like that your td got called back? how about holmes td called back because YOU’RE defender ran into miller and he only protected himself by lowering his shoulder. he didnt run outta his way to hit your db or push out his hands. his route just happened to take him into your also moving player.
3) you know havin’s (i think it was harvin) end around run for 10+ yards. well if you check the replay favre did his classic cheap shot of trying to take out a player’s ankles. not only is it a really dangerous move for our player, he has been flagged and fined for it repeatedly. the awesome fox announcers didnt happen to see that either.
the officiating wasnt great yesterday. i thought the defensive delay of game was a weird call against your team (which i think we picked up the first down away by the time they whistled the play dead because they took a long time to do it). but the calls evened out , we out played you and we deserved the win.

most of us will agree
that the tripping call was bs…
And there may have been holding on the kick return………and Heath Miller’s offensive pass interference )which erased a TD) was questionable at best but niether of them compare to the tripping….it was a big momentum change..
however, i do think its worth noting both the offensive pass interference and Rashard’s fumble. I’ve seen a lot of Viking fans say the refs gave us this one of the Vikes handed it way, to some degree that is true obviously but its important to remember that the offensive pass interference and that fumble robbed us of two TDs. So its not like we didn’t give the Vikes a break too.
All that being said though, we we’re lucky to win that one. But if we are talking about “should have” wins then we would be 6-1 right now….
